Once in a lifetime, you experience a moment that you know you will never be lucky enough to witness again. 

At the start of the 2022 whale migration season, I travelled to the coast in hope of capturing something out of the ordinary. I arrived at my local vantage point and what followed was nothing short of incredible. A single whale appeared to be gracefully floating around 50 metres off the shore. After chatting with some locals at the lookout, they informed me the whale had been in the area for some time and were concerned that it was injured or tangled in netting. 

I launched my drone to investigate if this animal was struggling or simply enjoying the sea. Thankfully, after a close inspection there were no signs of any trauma to this animal and it was just simply enjoying the ocean waves. 

It was an overcast day with less than ideal flying conditions, but with it being so close to shore I just had to follow it along its path as long as I could. In the distance a small rainbow was forming from the passing rain clouds. I patiently tried to wait for that miracle breach, that whales are known for, whilst focussing on the rainbow - that once in a lifetime shot. 

I'm forever grateful for being in the right place at the right time to witness such a beautiful display of nature.
