On June 21 2023, Elon Musk, the self-declared "free-speech maximalist" that "cis" and "cisgender" were slurs worthy of suspension from his platform. Words used to distinguish trans individuals from those who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. By doing so, he revealed the stark hypocrisy underlying his proclamations of supporting free speech, as he actively suppressed an essential vocabulary for understanding and addressing the struggles of the transgender community. Through this suppression, he both alienated and silenced a vulnerable minority, cementing himself as a figure emblematic of authoritarian control under the guise of liberty.
