The dead entered the underworld by crossing the river Acheron, in the boat of Charon, who charged an obolus (coin) for the passage, placed under the tongue of the dead by his faithful relatives. 
The destitute and those who had no friends remained forever on the river bank. The opposite bank was guarded by Cerberus, the three-headed dog defeated by Hercules. 
Beyond Cerberus, the shadows of the dead entered Tartarus, the land of the dead.
