Tender

The breakthrough work of geneticists and biologists of the twentieth century decoded the sequencing of our DNA, and revealed the science behind what makes each of us who we are. As though the existence of this encoded blueprint must be seen to be believed, genetic sequencing has since been carefully and artfully visualized by scientists over the years  a human-assisted reveal of natures great conceptual painting. 

These visualizations present snippets of our encoding through cryptic grids of colored rectangles compositions of small marks that add up to define us, providing markers for specific traits that exist across people. These sequences become a shorthand for labeling who we are  yet, even in aggregate, these sequences cannot tell the full story of identity.

Of That Ilk imagines how the visualization of scientific sequencing would look if it included all the human attributes that we develop over time and that escape rigid definition. The fictional sequencing in this generative series reveals the blurring, blending, warping, overlapping, and shape-shifting of markings that represent each supposed attribute of our very identities. 

This aesthetic abstraction of data ends up feeling more like us than any objective definition attempted for our individual identities  and the imperfections and variety within these artful visualizations are a celebration of the vast difference in character and quality of every person. By furthering the artistic interpretation of our genetic codes, Of That Ilk appreciates the elegance of life's underlying instructions, while representing how each of us can see these blueprints through in unendingly unexpected ways.

Hodlers Projects

Lines of Memories is a project about how we remember the places that are dear to us. The places where we grew up. The places we had to leave for some reason. Different people had different reasons for that: some left in search of a better life, some for love, and others were forced to leave against their will. I haven't seen my home for almost a year and a half, haven't seen some family members, friends, colleagues. I long for the sight of a passenger plane soaring in the sky. That is what truly represents a symbol of peace. Because only where there are no wars or conflicts, airlines continue their operations, and people can peacefully fly to different cities for their own affairs. I miss the simple road trips across the country, where you can just look out the window and admire the beauty of fields, mountains, and forests on the horizon. I miss traveling to different cities, where you go not to escape from someone, but simply to relax and enjoy your time in a new place. I yearn for home. And all these places are still preserved in my memory, and in the memories of people like me. Over time, they have become blurry and less distinct. Details have faded, leaving only contours and outlines. But hope never disappears to restore them like a damaged file or restore them like an old photograph, to see these places again and overwrite them in my memory in the highest quality and resolution possible.

Theoretical Townships explores the tension between flatness and depth within aerial representations of landscape. The title references a well-known diagram, created in 1785, illustrating the method for numbering sections of a standard township survey. Mirroring the structure of this diagram, each output from Theoretical Townships is subdivided into a grid of sections, ranging from one to thirty-six. In addition to incorporating landscape elements, such as pivot irrigators, roads, and buildings, the code also overlays large blocks of color, which create associations with two-dimensional quilting patterns. Through this representational conflation of flatness and depth, the project reveals an inherent conflict between landscape and the grid: the former being an irregular, topographic continuum, and the latter operating as an abstract, geometrical device for measurement and control. Embedded within the tension between landscape and the grid is a complex set of relations regarding the history and politics of territorial expansion.

By leveraging the capabilities of p5.js and chroma.js libraries, this artwork demonstrates the beauty and elegance that can be achieved through minimal hardcoding and a focus on essential inputs.

Tender Flex

Tur is an A.I. generated art series created by Ganchitecture in collaboration with Adam Berninger of Tender  and takes its name from the root of "tower" and the german word for door or doorway: a metaphor for the passage between eras that these towers symbolize. 

For millennia, civilizations have used monumental structures to mark the rallying point of their tribe, their culture, and the claims they stake. Ultimately, these central pillars even became the symbols of their civilization, transcending each budding and ending of an era. Now, what has evolved from simple stone structures into complex temples and citadels is overshadowed by the complex urban organisms that define our greatest places of congregation. 

Tur imagines a future where the global technoculture reaches its tipping point, and dominance is contested between humans and artificial intelligence. The resulting cultural regressions lead back to the iconic towering structures of civiliazations-past as a means for asserting authority. These structures serve as a visible counterpoint to the increasingly unseen and pervasive controls applied through technology. The return to this priapic symbol of power of course derives its formal and structural qualities from the completeness provided by an A.I. driven survey of historic towers and imposing architecture. 

These raw, monumental, and anachronistic structures are imperfect and decaying  transforming their A.I. sources into a new typologies of future towers. Are these the creations of humanitys last attempt at dominance or an auto-mechanistic creation of artificial intelligence that assimilates symbols of human power? Either way, their archetypal structures embody the anonymous remnants of future cultures: the places that last survive their epoch, and perhaps even the last earthly epoch.

*Viridaria* playfully revisits the adventure of Alice in the Garden of Live Flowers from *Through the Looking Glass* by Lewis Carroll. Alice learns that following the path through this garden only leads her back to where she has started. To break free, she finds that she must reverse logic and force herself to walk in the opposite direction of her destination.

In this series, the not-quite-perfect mirrored images challenge our perception of reality, inviting us to take a closer look, to welcome the surprises. Like Alice, we might discover that, to find our way, we must first step back and look from a different perspective.

Voyager 1 and 2 have been launched in 1977. They are the farthest man crafted objects from Earth. It will take tens to hundreds thousands years for them to reach other stars and planetary systems despite a velocity of 17km/s... 
The on-board camera, mysteriously, sends back images of the remote planets and their moons...

ARTWORK DESCRIPTION

The artwork represents a planet and its moons. There is an important variety of planet/moons types, different perspectives (far or near the planet and moons), different space environments (stars, Milky Way, star clusters,  comet, eclipse, Einstein cross and ring, Magellanic Clouds...). A very rare Gravitational Wave affecting space properties can occur. Usually Monochromatic, there is a variation with the addition of one color. In "live view" use the interaction possibilities to explore a given planetary system...

TECHNICAL DETAILS

In the same way photons hit the CCD camera, tiny squares hit the canvas.
The algorithm is minimalist : pick a random position in the canvas and decide if a monochromatic tiny square has to be drawn or not (rarely, squares can be drawn in 2 colors). The light parts are drawn only through the absence of drawing. The whole complexity resides in the decision to draw or not to draw. Mathematical functions are underneath each decision, like space and time are underneath all of our world. 


INTERACTIONS

You can interact with keyboard commands or through URL parameters.
- press S : to save the current image in png
- press 2, 3... 9 (URL, add DP=2) : change resolution. Increase the value step by step. Can be very long to draw, but it"s worth it for printing. Very High Resolution can be achieved. The file is saved automatically when finished.
- press L (URL, add liveMode=true) : to discover different views of your planetary system (images will be drawn one after the other, with the same parameters for the main planet and the space environment).
- press F (URL, add fitToScreen=true) : to adapt the artwork to any screen size (artwork is changed but parameters remain the same)
- press M (URL, add monoChromatic=true) : to force the artwork to be monochromatic
- press G (URL, add GW=false) : to remove the gravitational wave effect
- URL, add offset=<Number>, to offset the image production (same planet parameters and space environment)
- URL, add grainy=true, to change the size of the grain (useful for displays to speed up the creation process)

URL Parameters are added to the end of a URL after a ? symbol, and multiple parameters can be included when separated by the & symbol.
You can combine "?liveMode=true&fitToScreen=true&grainy=true" in the URL for display purpose (TV, Art show...). 
Combining liveMode and DP for resolution allows you to save all the images produced.

Evolving Pixels is an exhibition centered around the theme of growth. The show invites a set of diverse digital artists who work with computational technologiesnamely, generative or AI-assistedto investigate what growth means to them. 

PROOF has partnered with Art Blocks and Venus Over Manhattan to bring Evolving Pixels to life. The long-form generative collections in the exhibition are being delivered with the Art Blocks Engine. From April 12-24, Venus Over Manhattan will display Evolving Pixels at their Soho gallery in New York City.

100-line generative poem written by Pushcart-nominated poet Sasha Stiles and her AI-powered alter ego, Technelegy  a custom text generator rooted in GPT that Stiles has been training and collaborating with since 2018. This poem was written line by line, token by token, using p5.js as the page. Starting from Edition 1  the title  each subsequent edition represents the growth and accretion of the poem from lines 0 through 100, with the final edition containing the entire text.

Solar Transits by Robert Hodgin

Solar Transits is a procedural exploration of the origins of astrophotography. Each image in this series depicts a randomly generated astronomical event but viewed through the lens of mid-to-late 19th century image capture techniques. The collection features a variety of rare alignments of stars, planets and moons, and are rendered in the spirit of the daguerreotype.

In June of 2012, I took a trip to Minneapolis to speak at the Eyeo Festival. Venus was going to transit while I was there. I was curious. I had not seen a transit before. At 5:09 pm on June 5th, a nearly imperceptible black circle began its march across the sun. Were it not a predicted mathematical certainty, it is doubtful anyone would have noticed. For six minutes, the light from the sun was 0.087% dimmer.

It is a significant thing to see an object silhouetted against the sun. We are so accustom to seeing our perfect circle of pure light that we can"t help but to celebrate the occasions where something blocks the view. I still feel a little more excitement when a slight shadow shoots across the landscape on a cloudless day, the source being an extremely rare transit of a commercial jet liner.

Exponentially more rare is the planetary transit. When Venus hangs on the horizon, glowing against the night sky, it is all too easy to think it another star. Only when it is viewed in silhouette can its position in our universe be fully appreciated: orbitally locked like us, and forever drawing it"s path around the sun. That tiny black circle effected me in a big way. The scale of the cosmos shifted into perspective. That doesnt happen often. I was incredibly moved. It was an experience I will never forget. This project is an homage to that strange once-in-a-lifetime event.

As it turns out, I was very lucky to have seen it at all. In the time since my birth in 1972, a Venus transit has only happened twice. The 1st time was in 2004 but I lived in a part of the world where it was not visible. The 2nd time was in 2012. Unless I live to be 145 years old, there wont be a 3rd time. There are a couple silver linings: the Great American solar eclipse is on April 8 2024, and Mercury will transit in 2032.

The first 10 sales will have the option to purchase their output in the form of a framed daguerreotype.

VOICE GEMS

In 2021, Herbert W. Franke and Harry Yeff started a conversation about the concept of VOICE GEMS and an audio-visual collaboration. Franke suggested using the lyrics of ASTROPOETICON because they are a minimalist and associative approach to language that could have been created by an AI. These lyrics were frozen as gemstones, the VOICE GEMS ASTROPOETICON, created by Herbert W. Franke, Harry Yeff, Trung Bao and an AI. (The first three 1/1s have been minted and collected in 2021.)

The lyrics used for the VOICE GEMS ASTROPOETICON (DESTINATION IN UNCERTAINTY) belong to a cycle of 16 poems called ASTROPOETICON. Written by Franke in 1979 to be published in a book alongside artworks by German space artist Andreas Nottebohm, he voiced them on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 2007. 

Every voice is unique, and with that comes unique fingerprint-like data that can be used for bespoke and human centred generative design. Harry Yeff (aka REEPS100) and Trung Bao have developed a voice-centred generative system utilising data found in a human voice to synthesise the artworks form and colour. Features like pitch, resonance, harmonics and pace sculpt 200 000 particle data points in a simulated digital space. The VOICE GEMS series is a vibrant, unprecedented meditation highlighting remarkable and influential voices. Each VOICE GEM is added to the VOICE GEMS: 1000 Year archive. 

Herbert W. Franke (19272022) was a pioneer of computer art who anticipated the metaverse. For several decades, he separated three lives: the caver and scientist; the artist and curator; and the science fiction author. In the early 1950s, caving led him to experiment with light and technology. He kept his curiosity throughout his life; it was his drive to examine new technologies for their artistic potential. His pioneering spirit made him one of the first computer artists who was more than six decades ahead of his time. In 1979, he co-founded Ars Electronica. Franke has been called the most prominent German science fiction writer by Die Zeit, and a short story fireworker by the FAZ. In 2022, his first NFT Drop MATH ART sold out within 30 seconds on Quantum, and he was the headliner at the Tezos Booth at Art Basel with MONDRIAN, a work from 1979. Herbert W. Franke died on July 16, 2022, at the age of 95, leaving behind an extensive oeuvre.

An reverse generative art experiment based on the gen art token -106, approximately, but of inner intuition.

This mint comes with 69.1x35 cm physical ink painting or calligraphy framed with my jacquard woven generative art patterns. There are total of 4 fabrics A, B, C, D, the right side. Also the "wrong" side A", B", C", D", so total of 8 patterns developed for this collection. And there are more than the 2 to the power 2 ways to frame. Often in Chinese style framing is art itself, not unlike the art in the heart of the frame.

Here we use side only A fabric.

The NFT and the physical at mint is bounded together for accompaniment and provenance. For future secondary make sure what is include for future transaction.
