it's friday still

on monday i went to big bear with a bunch of my friends to see the first snowfall of the year, but it ended up just torrentially raining for the first day, like so bad that the power went out.

we finally got our snow, and that day the crypto market imploded, my friend crashed his car, AND i got sick. 

i managed to get out of bed over the next two days enough to appreciate the snow outside, but was pretty fucking bedridden. so much so that i missed uploading friday"s song yesterday.

so i wrote this to cheat the system.

So after working with a publishing label that was treating me like I was a slave, I got stuck in form and this idea that songwriting has to be one way, I took some time to heal because I really couldnt write for months. To help, I decided to ride my bike to clear my head, and one day I envisioned myself rapping a verse on the L.A. River. And thats how Joyride came to life. 

Joyride is an evolving practice of free verses that are straight to it. No form, just me and me philosophies in bars. Its a meditation, its short bits of me, its whatever you want to make it. An opportunity to just allow myself to ride the beat. To create these verses, I would start with a beat I love, rap on it and then send the accapella to Kaui to create something new out of it.

Culture, this first offering/verse off of Joyride came to me after rapping on Kaytranadas production. I wrote the verse in a nite and immediately knew I didnt want to add much else to it. I am very lyrical and I am realizing, sometimes one verse is enough. Sometimes keeping it simple is all you need. Sometimes just riding your own path is what I have to do. 

So this year as Im riding my path, I guess Im using this Joyride as an exercise in getting back to me, getting out of my way, sticking to my journey, continuing to create with bro Kaui who has been working with me for years, Im really excited for how this ride will take me to more paths. i had gotten back to LA and met someone that things just sort of snowballed with. i was supposed to fly back out to Europe a few days but cancelled my flight and spent every night more or less with her. i"d started an idea with my friend Mia before leaving that perfectly incapsulated the impulsiveness i was feeling. so i rounded it out and thus "44 ever" was born.

i was reminiscing about summertime in Europe at my house a couple days ago with some friends and just remembering the way life felt at the time. since making these BREATHE ambient tracks i"ve been pretty much exclusively using my Prophet this week, so with this track i just had fun with it.

"Light Show" is a song that accurately represents myself as a creative. It started out as most of my songs do, and that is with me tinkering around in Ableton. When I build something from scratch, often I cant contain myself and end up writing the lyrics when the production is only around 50% completed. Not surprisingly this song fell into that category and was written in just under 30 minutes. It"s fully written and produced by me.

I went a bit more aggressive on the lyrical content while adding pretty melodic moments to offset the seriousness of the song. "Light Show" is best played when you need a confidence boost. I detail times where I"ve let grudges slide and took the highroad, and also reflect on the fact that putting my pain out in the open is what"s allowed me to grow and reach levels of success as an artist. It"s 100% accurate when I state "I spent hard earned cash just to keep this up, I spent blood sweat and tears just to keep this going". 

This song is a window into my life, and I hope you can use this shit as a tool to let loose and rage.
