On a rainy day in Brooklyn, NYC circa 2017(??) Mija walked into a strangers tiny and gear-packed studio.  This stranger was Mark Evans.  That day they wrote a song together, unknowing that they would continue to create music for years to come.

Webb's First Deep Field (NIRCam Image)

Thousands of galaxies flood this near-infrared image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. High-resolution imaging from NASAs James Webb Space Telescope combined with a natural effect known as gravitational lensing made this finely detailed image possible.

First, focus on the galaxies responsible for the lensing: the bright white elliptical galaxy at the center of the image and smaller white galaxies throughout the image. Bound together by gravity in a galaxy cluster, they are bending the light from galaxies that appear in the vast distances behind them. The combined mass of the galaxies and dark matter act as a cosmic telescope, creating magnified, contorted, and sometimes mirrored images of individual galaxies.

Clear examples of mirroring are found in the prominent orange arcs to the left and right of the brightest cluster galaxy. These are lensed galaxies  each individual galaxy is shown twice in one arc. Webbs image has fully revealed their bright cores, which are filled with stars, along with orange star clusters along their edges.

Not all galaxies in this field are mirrored  some are stretched. Others appear scattered by interactions with other galaxies, leaving trails of stars behind them.

Webb has refined the level of detail we can observe throughout this field. Very diffuse galaxies appear like collections of loosely bound dandelion seeds aloft in a breeze. Individual pods of star formation practically bloom within some of the most distant galaxies  the clearest, most detailed views of star clusters in the early universe so far.

One galaxy speckled with star clusters appears near the bottom end of the bright central stars vertical diffraction spike  just to the right of a long orange arc. The long, thin ladybug-like galaxy is flecked with pockets of star formation. Draw a line between its wings to roughly match up its star clusters, mirrored top to bottom. Because this galaxy is so magnified and its individual star clusters are so crisp, researchers will be able to study it in exquisite detail, which wasnt previously possible for galaxies this distant.

The galaxies in this scene that are farthest away  the tiniest galaxies that are located well behind the cluster  look nothing like the spiral and elliptical galaxies observed in the local universe. They are much clumpier and more irregular. Webbs highly detailed image may help researchers measure the ages and masses of star clusters within these distant galaxies. This might lead to more accurate models of galaxies that existed at cosmic spring, when galaxies were sprouting tiny buds of new growth, actively interacting and merging, and had yet to develop into larger spirals. Ultimately, Webbs upcoming observations will help astronomers better understand how galaxies form and grow in the early universe.

Good Intentions

This is actually the third version of this song that I wrote. It first appeared as as soul sampled driven record on a mixtape I did called "Forget Me Not" when I went by Cello Kid. Then, I reproduced it for a mixtape called "Concerto Grosso", I went by Cello Figaro at the time, and it sounded more like this.

When I did this version, I finally felt like the record had reached it"s final form. It feels fitting to release this song as a free mint given the context of the chorus.

More about PAISLEY....

In 2017, I had a thought, patterns prevail. It was derivative of a quote from my best friend and frequent collaborator, Sky Welkin, which read passion prevails. Sky is a talented cartoonist that embeds profound messages like this throughout his work.

During our college years, hed often come by and draw while I made beats, this was our ghetto co-working era, and in these sessions wed smoke, engage in discourse, and share ideas about the respective worlds we were building in our art. In fact, I was very much into doing something new each album, but Sky was the primary influence for me to get into world-building and having a particular sense of style that was cultivated over time.

In one of my college apartments, I decided that to let Sky use all of the walls in my room as a canvas - the few hundred dollars that Id spend to have the room repainted when I moved was minuscule compared to the living art piece around me. Every so often I would discover some new character scene or phrase that hed drawn without me noticing, but one of these phrases was placed in such a way that I couldnt miss it as soon as I woke up, passion prevails.

Web3 has offered much in the form of expansion for the experiential qualities and monetization of my art. We always say things like, time passes quickly in web3.

As much as I agree, I find it interesting that time also seems to stay still - art is appreciated for its beauty regardless of age and with the possibilities available to me with NFTs, something like my debut album, can no experience a new form of appreciation.

As I begin to release works from the PAISLEY collection over time, it was only fitting that I began with the short film.

When I was working on the album, I connected with my friend and collaborator, Dawit N.M. to share the pattern theories I was creating from and what I was aesthetically into at the time. Dawit went on to handle the art direction for the album, as well as bringing my convoluted story concept to life as a film.

The story of PAISLEY exists in a universe in which we"ve all been made to forget true selves. Though, there are those of us that break free and reawaken, remembering all the knowledge of self that was once lost. A human that knows who they are can no longer be controlled and is thus a threat to those in power.

This is the case for our protagonists Figaro and Paisley. The pair, bound by fate, seek each other out in parallel universes with the hope to awaken their companion and continue their journey towards freedom. Our short film finds Figaro, moments after being awakened by Paisley, and follows them towards their attempted escape.

The PAISLEY album and short film are an allegory for patterns at every level of life. Just as cells make up organisms and organisms make up the planets, and the planets the universe, and so on - patterns, appear, reshape, and reappear until their purpose in your life is realized. In my album I explore the different patterns in my relationships and my relationships as patterns, that were required for me to grow individually.

This year marks the 3 year anniversary of the PAISLEY collection, with the short film has only been screened at live performances and intimate talks. Now it will all be immortalized on the blockchain.

Grateful (Demo)

I released the official production of Grateful a few weeks ago, and I wanted to try something new on here. First off, as a thank you to everyone who collected the first edition, you are all receiving this drop for free! And to anyone who wasnt able to collect the official drop (*cough cough my dad*) this one is for you. This release is actually the first demo that I made of Grateful back in 2020. The execution of the vocal is emotional yet super raw, and the lyrics arent quite as locked as the official drop, but there is a magic to it that I am so in love with and I think deserves to be appreciated too. Which, of course, made me think of you all! I love the idea of web3 setting the standard for a new artist/fan/friend relationship, and I want my work here to reflect that. This drop for me represents the opening of my green-room, and a welcome to my studio, where I get to share all the mistakes along the way, all the lessons learned, and all of the fun behind writing and producing music I love. Yall all the first to hear this version of the song, and if you feel inspired to collect it, thank you, and I appreciate you so much. Cheers to getting to know one another!

"Grateful" is about how to ease the blush of unfamiliarity when entering a new relationship. I wrote it when I made friends with the feeling of having just enough fuel to jump AND just enough fear to shut my eyes when I do it. This song is quite a bit more specific than my previous releases. As Stuck talked about trusting the feeling over the circumstance, and Paint in the Dark described the over-arching agreements that I have observed in the healthiest love, Grateful exemplifies these themes using the intimacy of a pillow talk conversation. It is about putting what Ive learned into action and trusting what happens next.
