Origins & Ancestries: Genesis

The Playa is a snapshot of all that goes on at Puerto Rico's beaches. Depicted are loosely rendered figures clad in their beachwear. Off to one side you see the ice cream vendor that cruises the shore offering a sweet cool off from the scorching sun. The background presents us with the refreshing, blue turquoise water, and the sunbathed sand.

Here's an inviting view of a local beach scene with an array of personalities sporting colorful beachwear. The painting has a primitive quality in its composition as there is a lack of perspective making something look bigger than it should be. An entertaining snapshot of the beach life.

This piece showcases the dancehall music event Sting, which is known for its clashes and rivalries between dancehall artists. This piece specifically recalls Sting 2008, where the two biggest artists at the time were in a heated rivalry and it all culminated on a famous Boxing Day morning.

Here I did a background of two apes playing, interacting. One is clearly there, the other one is hidden, you can barely see him. The poem is called "Invictus" and it is written by the British poet, writer, critic and editor William Earnest Henley (1849-1903). The poem is about having courage and pushing through in hard times. (Also see its sister piece, "Poem With Ape in Fuchsia.")

Poem With Ape In Green

Heatwave I is inspired by the tropical temperature in the region. Hot weather brings not only intense heat but bright light. Here, everything looks awash in vibrant colors and overheated, as if powered by solar energy. This work suggests the decay of structures by the sun and also by the sea salt-laden air.

The Young Warriors is a book by Jamaican author VS Reid, one we had to read in high school for English literature classes. That book turned out to be one of my personal favorites and I wanted to pay homage to it and its author in my own way.
