"Life has a rhythm; it's constantly in motion"(Roebers, 2010), 
and embracing the notion that failure guides evolution(Whitehead, 1999). 

Aesthetics of Failure explores the organic fusion of two contrasting textures, seeking beauty within this blend. Dedicated to and inspired by Kim Cascone's article "The Aesthetics of Failure: Post-Digital Tendencies in Contemporary Computer Music"(2000), this collection employs custom shaders and p5.js to manipulate pixels and generate real-time animations that continuously evolve based on autonomous algorithmic choices.

If the viewers choose to engage with the animation, they become active participants in shaping the artwork. By clicking and interacting with the animation, viewers populate the canvas and influence the computer's decision-making process. This interaction leads to a dynamic interplay between the human and the computer, blurring the boundaries in expression between creator, experiencer and the evolving creation.

The animation's movement is guided by a steady rhythm, allowing viewers to perceive and adapt to the changes unfolding within the canvas. The computer continuously generates a stream of gestures, resulting in an ever-changing array of textures. Each gesture introduces new elements to the canvas, creating a fusion of watercolor-like forms and glitchy textures.

Aesthetics of Failure #29

Order and Disorder collection explores interaction between simple shapes in various organized and disorganized manner. It starts with a simple square grid that diverges into emergence of patterns using Perlin noises.

Collection combines reference to other work of mine like waves, noise fields, clouds, mountains, moons and polygons boolean operations. This explores the minimalism of achieving figurative work using only very simple primitives like squares and polygons. There is a balance between object packing and object clipping and a search of harmony between shape alignment and collisions. There are different kind of filling techniques as well as many different kind of foreground and background elements that may arise, each having different probability.

While the display is provided digitally with animation effects, it is also greatly appreciated when physically plotted: In fact, each item is physical plottable with pens, designed to be on A3 format.

Friendship Bracelets by Alexis Andr

Since founding Art Blocks in 2020, artist Erick Calderon (a.k.a. Snowfro) has been intrigued by the idea of representing digital artwork in the physical world in the form of an ephemeral physical object with meaning, but with no inherent value. 

Donald Judd has long been an inspiration for Art Blocks. One aspect we admire most about Judds artistic practice is the elegance of design he effortlessly paired with the accessibility of materials that could be found at a hardware store. With Judd as inspiration, we hatched a plan to create a unique generative art friendship bracelet that includes instructions to make, in minutes, a simple bracelet using a few dollars worth of embroidery floss. Donald Judd believed that what surrounds us in our day-to-day life is already so beautiful, and that ultimately the experience of creating art is as important as owning it.

Erick was incredibly excited to collaborate with renowned artist Alexis Andr (a.k.a. MacTuitui) to bring generative art and ephemeral physical objects together in the form of friendship bracelets. Conceptualized by Erick and aesthetically and programmatically designed by Alexis, this project pairs creative coding with a beautiful spectrum of embroidery floss colors. The project was a true team effort, as each member of the Art Blocks team designed and named their own color palette!

The project is a token of our appreciation to the creators, makers, builders, and collectors who have all contributed to making the Art Blocks community what it is today. Participating in this project is a signal, both online and IRL, that youre a participant in this evolution of art + community. You are pushing the best ideas forward. You are the reason all of these imaginative projects come to life. Our community is what makes all of this possible. So, to say it plainly, we appreciate you, and we hope that youll accept this bracelet as a token of our special friendship!

Plottables is a platform dedicated to pen plottable generative art.

Stroomlijn holds a special place for me. While focused on creating a plottable project, I neglected my creative enjoyment. As a result, I ended up with many unfinished projects that were okay but didn't feel like something I could proudly call my own. Everything clicked when I released those limitations and pursued something I truly enjoyed, only transforming it into a plottable work after the visuals were how I wanted them to be.

My studio is cluttered with various test plots and different directions I initially had for this project. I took a lot of inspiration from artists like Mario Nigro and Peter Struycken, who use bold rectangular patterns in their work. I studied their art and learned how to create dark and thick shapes using just lines. Once I mastered that technique, I incorporated it into my own personal style, with Stroomlijn being the final result.

For this project, it's best to use Pigma Micron 05 fineliners when plotting. If you're plotting a white on black design, go for a white Sakura Gelly Roll 08 pen. When it comes to paper, choose Bristol Smooth for white background plots. Use Fabriano Black Black for black background plots. For the other options use smooth thick (160g+) paper in light grey or cream (Mi-Teintes for example).

To reduce the chance of mistakes, set your plotter settings to a slow speed. If you wish to experiment with a thinner pen, you can add ?density=$ to the URL of the live view. Replace $ with 2 or 3 to increase the amount of lines that are drawn. 1 is the default value. You can also use decimal numbers but those can result in different patterns. Press spacebar to download the new SVG file.

Scratch is a Zen-inspired generative art project that explores the captivating patterns that sanding discs create on metal surfaces. The digital artworks can be pen-plotted at any scale, and an alternate physical output can be created on sheets of metal using CNC machines.

Interactivity:
'S' saves the SVG. 'C' previews the CNC paths. 'E' exports the CNC paths. 'H' hides the signature stamp.

Plotter Notes:
To replicate the density of the digital image, choose a pen for the main area of a Scratch that is 1/1000th the length of the sides of the plottable area. For the signature, a pen that is 2.6 times thicker than the one used for the main area is suggested. For instance, for a 10" square plot, a 0.25mm pen for the main image and a 0.65mm pen for the signature will closely mimic the density of the digital output. While bolder pens can create more visually striking images, denser Scratches plotted with thicker pens might require a heavier paper stock.

CNC Notes:
Experienced CNC technicians can faithfully execute the outputs on 24" x 24" sheets of metal by using 1", 2", and 3" sanding discs and a 1/16" end mill. The choice of material and finish should be based on the specific characteristics of the Scratch output. If the Scratch output includes the 'Dark' feature, anodized aluminum or copper with a patina can be used. Clear coat the piece after machining to prevent tarnishing.
