Velatura is a method of indirect painting performed by applying numerous layers of semi-opaque to semi-translucent paint to a work of art in stages, letting each dry completely before adding another. As the layers all possess some level of transparency, light passes through the paint, hitting the canvas and reflecting back toward the viewer. The initial layer of paint that smooths and grounds a painting for building subsequent layers upon. The bedrock by which hidden magic is revealed. If a light imprimatura is used over a dark surface, reflecting light will cause a luminous effect. If a dark imprimatura is used over a light surface, colors will be deep, rich, and complex. Imprimatura or Grisaille are often the first step in the intricate, time consuming, and many-layered paintings made with Velatura, Sfumato, and/or glazing techniques.  


This piece was created by hand-sketching in digital charcoal, layering and smoothing with Artificial Intelligence (Neural Filters), mixing in Public Domain master painting (still life) for texture, and digitally hand-painting/manipulating for cohesion. Its process and aesthetic are intentionally similar to the artist's earliest work, before they discovered NFTs, and before they began to share their inner world with anyone. The sketch lines are visible.  


It is the first layer in a journey that mirrors the artist's life.

[ TOKYO'S MIDNIGHT |  ] is a visual love letter to that place that made me fall in love with Tokyo, and also to the community that made me grow as an artist in web3, Moonbirds.

This very place full of energy, overwhelmingly tall buildings, oceans of people, and billborads that light up the streets creating an unforgettable neon night memory that gets imprinted in anyones soul that has had the privilege to experience it, and those who havent, have probably seen similar references in movie, tv shows, or books...

By making use of cinematography, and a triptych layout, I create three different points of view of the same moment happening at the same time, this is done with the goal of triggering a sense of immersion by the viewer who ends up imagining the rest of the story.

Battles and armor are for those who fear strife,
Yet in self-protection, you"ve locked away life.

Trauma, when recognized, can begin to mend,
For you are worthy of love, support, and true friends.

You are deserving of partnership, trust, and care,
Of a heart that is held, and a love that is rare.

You need not prove, earn, or beg to receive,
For your worthiness shines, in the simple act of being.
