On 7/17/12 @ 9:32am I shot my 1st newsstand near 6th Ave & 46th St. Drawn in by the vibrant colors & organized product placement, this series began its journey providing an instant time stamp via magazine covers and headlines.  All photographs were shot on the iPhone 4s - 11promax. Cities included: New York, Jersey City, Los Angeles, Jersey City, London, Paris, Barcelona, Lima, Cusco, Punta Arenas, Venice, Milan, Rome, Naples, Pozzuoli, Jerusalem, Dar Es Salaam, Tokyo, Kamakura, Cairo, & Marrakesh.

90 Miles

90 Miles is a post-photography, AI reporting illustration experiment by MCB (@punk4803), curated by Blockbird (@_blockbird), exploring historical events and realities of Cuban life that have, since 1961, motivated Cubans to cross the 90 miles of ocean separating Havana from Florida.

For over 25 years, I kept a list of subjects to document but was unable to, mainly due to access or that access was impossible. While working in Cuba from 2014-2016, more subjects were added to the list with the assumption they would likely never be created.

Since 1961, not long after Fidel Castro came to power and after the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis, every year thousands of Cubans cross the 90 miles of ocean that separates Havana from Florida. 

In 2022, Cuba experienced its largest exodus since the 1980s due to an ongoing economic crisis, with soaring inflation alongside shortages of food and medicine.

The Cubans who attempt the crossing are incredibly resourceful, as necessary to the journey and as reflected in the rafts and boats often assembled from tires, random pieces of wood and plastic, household supplies, etc.

Crash is a deeply personal project, stretching back to my childhood being raised in a family of mechanics, surrounded by car parts and junked vehicles. Draxlers Service still exists as an auto body in central Wisconsin where my father grew up.
In addition, my mother experienced two significant car crashes during my childhood, she was nearly paralyzed by the first, her life was ended by the second. I dont bring that up to be morbid, but because I find more beauty in a crashed vehicle than a brand-new one. I am helplessly drawn to scenes of twisted metal.
These outputs have all of that encapsulated within them: beauty, mystery, intrigue, violence, and unpredictability.

Referencing the aesthetic of his own COMMENT-OUT series from 2021, Kevin Abosch presents his first open-editioned artwork and will leave it to collectors to speculate as to why he chose to create this work and how it will be valued.
