IIWII (w/ The Kite String Tangle)

IIWII (It Is What It Is) is the debut collaboration between producers BRUX & The Kite String Tangle who are long time fans of each others work & friends who came up in the Australian electronic music circuit.  

Danny Harley aka The Kite String Tangle is a Brisbane-based electronic/pop producer & artist with a string of gold certified releases (Arcadia, This Thing We Got) & awards (+ ARIA noms) under his belt. He is relatively new to web3, with this being his genesis collaborative drop on Sound.xyz with more to come..

Liz Maniscalco aka BRUX is a New York-based electronic producer & artist with a prominent web 3 presence and impressive catalog of collaborations (Kimbra, Flight Facilities, Pat Lok) including recent cosigns on her BADBOI ep from Boys Noise, Busy P & Modeselektor.


The track was written & produced by the pair, spawning from a jam session & synth nerd-out in Sydney, 2018. It was later finished off in Brisbane in between tour with a session at Dannys" music studio. 



IIWII is a comment on the climate inaction, conceptually stemming from conversations about being on the precipice of great change & empathy fatigue over the constant barrage of nihilistic news coverage. The magnitude of the climate issue is so overwhelming that it"s easy for us all to disengage & feel like our contributions are just a drop in the ocean.

all of these songs were made with live instruments, primarily my fender rhodes + guitars / bass.

Im Valentina Cy, and Im an LA born and raised (and never left) artist. I have been singing since I could speak, and I was raised in a house where making music was second nature. When I was 22 I went to a scholarship program created by Mike Posner called Amor Fati, where he took 5 artists and 10 mentors  to Telluride Colorado, and taught each one of all skills that we needed to become better artists. I was taught how to make a demo on Ableton. Since then I have been producing, writing, and mixing all my music. 

I am a self-managed independent artist, and I am gearing up to release an album November 16th. The album is called when you feel like dying. The first song I am dropping on Sound is a single from the album. Its called cantaloupe ave. and its a song that I had to cry a lot to make. I used a voice memo from someone in my past, and I wrote the song about them as well. The cover art is also a picture of the street that they used to live on. This song is essentially very simple. Its comprised of a cut up voice memo, my friend Gabe Noel on the cello, a kick, some fucked up piano, and vocals. I like when a song is able to hit me where it hurts, and this one did that for me.

A few months ago I almost quit music and I didnt really feel like I had a purpose in life anymore. It took me making cantaloupe ave., and this entire album, to make it feel like I had something worth living for. That might sound ironic since the name of the album is when you feel like dying, but sometimes you have to leech all the bad out to feel something good.

Crypto oy is a wake-up call for all the chart-watchers, candle-counters, and JPEG-flippers that find a way to bring crypto into any conversation, no matter what its about.

We all know them  checking OpenSea like its instagram, obsessing over prices, hodling this, shorting that and unable to focus on anything except Discord.

As exciting as crypto is, and as likely as it is to revolutionize finance in the coming years, I want to shift our attention to a very urgent issue, which is the possibility of SCOTUS overturning Roe v Wade. This attack on reproductive rights is something we should be talking about as loudly as a crypto boy talks about NFTs*. Its imperative that we band together and fight to protect our fundamental rights. To help bring this together I partnered with Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot, who I love and respect, to create the custom art for this NFT.

Making music has always been such a heavily personal thing for me. I started as a kid in Chicago just making beats in my bedroom at my parents house then met the Louis The Child guys, they were coming up at the same time as me, and we got a studio together and that really helped me get a foot in the door in the EDM scene. I wasnt sure if the music thing was for real until I saw on Twitter that this DJ group Zeds Dead played one of my songs on a massive stage at a huge festival which blew my mind because it was a song I made in my bedroom at my parents house. That made me feel like maybe I could really do this for a living and thats kind of when I became super committed to the whole thing. Working on whatever projects I or the Louis guys had going on in the same studio really drove us to level each other up, it was pretty foundational for me and its probably the reason why I like to evolve my sound so much. I like blending genres or artists that might not seem like theyd make sense together which is kind of what Im trying to do with this new project coming out. 

I want to continue this trend of pushing myself to evolve musically so working with Sound.xyz for this new track Midnight Blue is actually super exciting. I think it would be pretty dumb not to explore web3 and the NFT scene, I think its the future of the industry. Midnight Blue is the perfect track to debut with as well because it really showcases that unique and unexpected genre-blend that I try to constantly push the limits of. On top of that, I also play with rhythm and tempo a little more towards the end of the track which is something that I want to start to showcase a little more because it just adds one more element to the mix. This is a first for me so Im really stoked to see how the track fits into Sound.xyz"s platformI think folding NFTs into the music industry opens up a lot of possibilities for artists too, so overall I"m really excited to work with them.

i remember struggling as an independent artist in web2, wishing someone would extend an olive branch and save me. i remember thinking that the help i needed was outside of myself. i remember almost giving up, deciding to push forward instead, and pulling myself out of a depression.

like malanda says in the poem in the outro, "people will only see the peak of a mountain." but there were lows we all fought to arrive where we are today. and for every low, i need you to turn this shit up LOUD and go 10x as hard after every win. i want you to be prouda you, "cause you could"ve stayed down but chose to press on instead.

i"m prouda me. i"m proud i kept going. i"m thankful for web3 for giving me a chance to have the music career i always knew i deserved. i appreciate david for believing in me and trusting that i was the perfect person for my position here at sound to help support so many amazing artists. i"m grateful for new community and life-changing experiences. i"m humbled by God"s grace.

Temporary is a song that has moved beyond what I originally intended, becoming an experiment of sorts--a song that takes limitless forms and exists in different worlds, allowing the music become a living, breathing entity, forever in flux. Temporary 001 is one of many versions of this song that you will hear. Every iteration of the production (and there are many) will push us further into new territory--working, reworking, and pressing us to be present and settled into the unknown. I hope this experiment allows you to see this song from a new angle.

"Vocode"

In 2013, my album OUT OF THE BLACK was released. 
In celebration of 10 years, I am releasing this unreleased song Vocode. 

Vocode was a track I made during the Out Of The Black album process, you can hear similarities to Rocky 2 or Touch It and its got that banging vibe from my classic & Down. 
I played it out in clubs in the early 10s, but decided not to include it in the album. If you love the hard & funky sound from that time, heres something special from the vaults that would have been lost to history.

Pat Lok and Party Pupils first met in Michigan in 2018, while they were both performing at Electric Forest. Hitting it off immediately - first with an online collab remix of a-ha - they went on to make several records together - "From The Back," "I Want You", "Alaska" and the future classic "So Fine".

"Chief Ivory" is a mysterious, introspective electronic trip: a departure from the club-friendly sound they are mostly known for. The track samples a live IG jam by Grammy Award-winning pianist and producer Kiefer. Call this a Los Angeles super-collab if you will. Dive in and get lost.
