Photographing Other Worlds Open Edition

Big Daddy is the tallest dune in Namibia"s world famous Sossusvlei area. This magnificent dune is situated between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and at 325 meters it dwarfs the other dunes. Taken from a helicopter flight at sunset, this image shows 3 people hiking down along the ridge of Big Daddy, giving a proper sense of scale of how big the dune is, with Deadvlei (which translates to Dead Valley) in the background. Famous for its iconic 1000-year old trees, Deadvlei is a white clay pan that changes color during the day as the sun is setting. 

The Sossuvlei/Deadvlei area has inspired photographers from all around the world for decades. Yet, when I visited, I was looking for a different angle than the traditional ones that I knew from this place. Featuring both Big Daddy and Deadvlei on the same image, I"m very excited to share one of my favorite pieces from my Namibia body of work.

After the destruction of Hurricane Andrew on Miami Beach in 1992, the city of Miami commissioned the redesign of the lifeguard towers in vibrant fashion to uplift the spirits of the town. In the tradition of the Becher"s water tower series, this collection of Tommy Kwak"s photographs methodically examines the 30+ iconic towers that have become symbols of South Florida"s revitalization. This award-winning series of photographs utilizes similar framing and long exposures to produce minimal sky and sea backdrops in order to highlight the traits of each tower, inviting the viewer to appreciate and compare the electric color palettes and eccentric forms. This body of work shows Tommy"s distinct approach recognizable by the composition of the pictures, sophisticated usage of the angles, and manipulation of light, shadow, and colors. Tommy"s style of photography celebrates a kind of ephemeral beauty, and at the same time transforms these entities into more graphic forms, bringing a fresh perspective on the lifeguard towers of Miami Beach.

Made in San Francisco - A photo documentary of San Francisco culture shaped by its unique districts. This project was shot over 2 years and over 100 rolls of film slowly showcasing the city and how the history changed visually developed these areas.

This image was captured under the Golden Gate over 20 attempts on Cinestill 800t. The S bend in the wave was shot over and over knowing the shape was key for the composition. After a countless revisits to this location I knew I was walking away with one of my favorite images from San Francisco.
