I live for sampling. Everything is a remix.

The first time I heard D.J. Girl by Katalina was at a rave. For the next 10 years, I whole-heartedly believed that was the original song. (DJ Caffeine)

It wasnt until this year that I discovered the original and as a house-head you can imagine my excitement!

I immediately started playing it in all of my sets. I found the acapella and made an edit that felt more aligned with what I play today.

I played it out and people really liked it.

I made a TikTok and it went moderately viral (for me)

Me to myself: Hey I think I might have something big here!

Record labels: [Silence]

So I made another TikTok with an updated version. And it happened again.

Cool cool cool, so I guess Im doing it on my own.

I"ve mostly written songs about sad break-ups and mental health in the past but ever since I met my boyfriend TWERL my whole production and writing style has evolved to be much more up-lifting. It"s been nearly impossible for me to write anything sad since I met him and you can see that reflected in most of my music over the past year.

The lyrics for "Addicted" encompass the feeling of being in love with someone and never wanting to leave their side. They"re really meaningful to me because TWERL and I live on opposite sides of the planet and don"t get to see each other in person very often. Trying to navigate a long distance relationship can be hard but it"s been really cool to be able to create music and share these special moments together, even when we"re apart (s/o technology!).

"Addicted" is a follow-up single to our recent Sound release, "wherever you go", and ties into our ongoing love story. You can hear our mutual appreciation for fun synth melodies, vocal fills, and dreamy atmospheres throughout the track and we hope you can feel the pure love and emotion that was poured into it.

"When I wrote ETHER with RAC and my long time collaborator Peter Wade, I was feeling overwhelmed by the deep dark days of social medias Cult Of Self-Obsession and the destructive force it has on the world. I felt like I couldnt breathe because there was a larger than life, algorithm-driven monster determined to exploit the worst in all of us. It was crippling. However, in writing this song, I began to shift and shed this destruction and focus on the simplicity of connectinga real connection. I started to shift my CULT OF ME into the COMMUNITY OF US and realized that even on the smallest levels, connection is key to LOVE EVOL. All of the music that I write is extremely autobiographical. My goal is always to dig deeper within myself because thats where I feel everything starts when it comes to change in the world. It always begins within ourselves, I know the more transparent I can be with my experiences the more I can affect the world in a positive manner. I dont open up too much so my music is almost like public therapy for me. 

This song captures my story from the beginning, my current lifestyle, and my future goals. When I think about my history, my ancestry, and my roots I feel a deep sense of pride and am very thankful for where I am today. Most of us are more privileged than we realize, especially by simply having access to computers as well as having the knowledge and foresight to be using them in this way... ie. Web3 etc. 

Ive been waiting for the right time to drop this one as it is very special to me, and I hope everyone else feels the vibes and raw emotion in it as well.

Steve went to middle school and high school with us and has toured with us since the very beginning. His energy is a vital component of the Marian Hill cocktail and quite frankly he is simply the saxiest man in town.

Hey Im Alexander 23 an artist/songwriter/producer from Chicago who lives in LA but still roots for the Bulls. I started making music when I was 9 years old after seeing my dad play guitar. I knew instantly that if I wasnt gonna make it to the league that I had to make music for the rest of my life. I played in bands in high school and dropped out of college after my freshman year while studying engineering to tour as a drummer/bass player.

I originally moved to LA in 2018 to write/produce songs for other artists. It was cool to start to try to make a living doing in the studio, but I couldnt help but feel like something was missing. I was working with talented artists, but I wasnt feeling creatively fulfilled. I called my manager and told him to cancel all of my sessions. I wanted to be an artist and make my own music.  I wanted to exist musically outside the studio.

Fast forward a little bit and I was able to release my first music as Alexander 23 in 2019 and was fortunate enough to go on tour with Omar Apollo and Chelsea Cutler that same year. When the pandemic hit in 2020, everything changed, as it did for everyone. Tour was cut short and I went back to LA feeling defeated. That initial isolation brought me back to a time in my own life when everything was going wrong: personally, professionally, romantically. It was that same feeling that something really important was missing.

This feeling inspired me to write IDK You Yet and this song changed my life. This year I was able to go on tour opening for one of my heroes John Mayer, was nominated for a Grammy for co-producing good 4 u by Olivia Rodrigo and just last week IDK You Yet went platinum (three things that dont even sound real when I say them outloud). I wanted to share the original demo of IDK You Yet because hearing it in its original stripped form is such a strong reminder of the power of a single song. As fans of music I think we all understand that and its what keeps us coming back for more.

hello hello! i'm lyrah. i'm a writer/producer/singer based in LA.

im sooo excited for this drop. this has been my favorite song these last few months. and i can't wait for you to finally hear it.

i wrote this when I was living with my parents a year into the pandemic. i was making music out of their garage (so literally my own garage band lol). i made this one night when i exhausted listening to all my go-to comfort songs. it started as me in the cold, spidery garage on my uku. 

the chorus was the first thing i wrote:
"hold me if i lose my mind 
catatonic all the time erased
promise i won't be like this forever
i can see a day."

this song felt like a breakthrough therapy session. my mental health was in the absolute gutter, but some days you have to accept that and know that it won't be like that forever.

a few months ago i revisited this song, rewrote some pieces of it and the song was suddenly there. im now coming up on a year of having started this song. at the time of writing it, it felt more like a song to my boyfriend and wanting that comfort from him. now in listening back, it feels like a song to my future self. ive needed it this past week more than ever and it hits like a completely new song.

music is funny like that. hope it does something for you <3

"Light Show" is a song that accurately represents myself as a creative. It started out as most of my songs do, and that is with me tinkering around in Ableton. When I build something from scratch, often I cant contain myself and end up writing the lyrics when the production is only around 50% completed. Not surprisingly this song fell into that category and was written in just under 30 minutes. It"s fully written and produced by me.

I went a bit more aggressive on the lyrical content while adding pretty melodic moments to offset the seriousness of the song. "Light Show" is best played when you need a confidence boost. I detail times where I"ve let grudges slide and took the highroad, and also reflect on the fact that putting my pain out in the open is what"s allowed me to grow and reach levels of success as an artist. It"s 100% accurate when I state "I spent hard earned cash just to keep this up, I spent blood sweat and tears just to keep this going". 

This song is a window into my life, and I hope you can use this shit as a tool to let loose and rage.

Light Show #23

This will be the first song on our first album in 4 years. 

It almost didnt happen. 

Before the pandemic we had gotten so exhausted and jaded for a moment it felt like we might walk away. Then the world ended. And for the first time in 8 years we were apart. In those lost months we remembered how much Marian Hill means to us, and means to all of you. How the connection we find through our music is literally magic. And we knew we needed to finish this record.

Marian Hill gave both of us the lives we'd always dreamed of, and kept us going during the worst year of our lives. When Samantha found herself turning 30 in her childhood bedroom and Jeremy suffered an onset of chronic pain in both of his wrists, the music we made gave us moments of joy to hold onto in a world full of uncertainty. For a few moments each day, we could get lost in a song, and pretend we were playing it for you.

This song in some ways feels like a message from that time to eternity. When we started thinking of the lyrics we were really thinking about us as a band, us as songwriters...will we be remembered? Do people still care? Will anyone care in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?

Its also about wondering if an ex will remember you once the relationship is far in the rearview.

And about if any of our art will last as climate change escalates to world-ending levels.

I got into music later in life than most would assume. Being raised in an immigrant household, I didnt have the opportunity to join a band, sing in a choir, or play multiple instruments. The entirety of my childhood was engulfed in school and sports, and I never really had the opportunity to pursue what I was passionate about as it didnt fit the mold of what felt traditionally acceptable to my family.

I was introduced to music when I was seven. My brother - who is 15 years older than me - gave me his iPod classic, and for the first time I felt enamored. I was exposed to songs that most kids my age werent listening to, and in large part I attribute that iPod to getting me through elementary school. I was never a popular kid growing up, and it didn"t help that I was struggling as I developed my English skills and navigating my way through a brand new culture. Most of the kids around me had seen life through a lens that was foreign to me, and that iPod helped me escape that reality and find meaning amongst the uncertainty. 

I knew then and there that I loved music, but I always approached it tangentially. In high school I became a self-proclaimed audio engineer, recording local artists in my bedroom closet. Eventually some of the artists I was recording asked me for beats but I wasnt at all ready to recognize myself as an actual musician. I feared rejection and more importantly - being bad at something I aspired to be great at.

During my freshman year of college I decided to be intentional about what I wanted and take my life seriously. While studying pre-med and being an athlete, I decided to 180 my lifes trajectory and unapologetically go all in on learning how to make music. And I did this in the most extreme way possible: Every morning at 4 A.M. I"d start my day by taking notes on music production. I began my journey by taking every session I could across the street at Berklee School of Music - always being the worst producer in the room. I stopped caring about school entirely. My life became a big game of catchup - I lived on the margins to work on music in every crevice I could find, to catch up to the artists I was surrounding myself with. And while Im grateful for those years of my life, they did come with a cost. 

All of us have bad habits, and mine is being selfish to a fault. Over the course of the past four years, Ive cut so many people out of my life. Childhood friendships, relationships, and even family members have fallen by the wayside as a result of my manic approach to furthering my career. I figured that the easiest way out for me was never getting close to anyone in the first place, because all that would do is put them on a fast track to eventually leaving my life. And while I dont regret the choices Ive made in the process, that doesnt mean theyve been easy to accept. 

"Too Close" is my manifestation of that feeling. Everything you hear - from the softness of the chords to the delivery of Bloody Whites vocals - feels like a reflection of the thoughts Ive experienced along the way. In a way, writing this song helped me sort through them and gain a better understanding of myself.

Music is a universal language--truly loved by all. Through creating this song, both Morgxn and I were able to find some peace during these tumultuous times.  

The origin story: The introduction actually began at a Halloween party hosted at Charli XCX"s home. Fast forward to the pandemic, Morgxn sends me a very special vocal he had written in London just before the lockdown. The message and lyrics resonated so deeply that I had to create a song that truly represented how I felt.

Though the song was written before our society shutdown--it had more meaning during.  This song is about the idea of craving touch that feels euphoric and cathartic. After dealing with 2 years of physical separation from our loved ones, this song is a celebration of togetherness and our love for each other.

hi. im sad alex. im from delaware, which is a real place other than that waynes world line. i have been doing music since i was a very small human and professionally in both nashville and la for the last 9 years. 

i think my biggest strength and weakness in this industry has been my versatility. i can wake up one day wanting to write a sad introspective folk song about my lifes failures, and the next day i write a song about my tits (for real, you can see it on my tiktok and dsps, it did quite well). this makes me a valuable writer and producer in the room for other projects, but can often make decisions about my own the most difficult. because that would require defining the hardest question of all for me, who am i? 

but occasionally i make a song baby that defies all that doubt. it flows out effortlessly, i dont follow any rulebook or try and mold it into something it isnt. and as a result, it finally feels fully me. it was a no brainer for my genesis sound release to give you one of these precious bbs. this one is partly about a guy that i have written probably 200 songs about, one of those beautifully catastrophic heartbreaks that turns you into an endless bubbling well of emotion. if you havent had one of these, i 10/10 recommend for your full experience as a human. but the majority part is about how when you hold onto someone that tightly, after theyre gone it can be hard to figure out where to put that love. the manic titling of this song represents that little voice inside screaming the bitter tired truth that for me, its unfortunately often easier to love someone else than to learn to love myself. something im working on, shoutout free kaiser therapy. 

im very grateful for my experience in the industry the last few years, that same aforementioned epic heartbreak ended up getting me a pub deal and record deal, and as a result ive had the opportunity to work with some incredible people, had many cool and fun times, etc. however a few months ago (by choice) i left both in an effort to build the career i want from the ground up. this is my first solo release since leaving my deal, which i wrote and produced fully myself. im so excited to connect with all of you and share what i have planned for the future. it is some of the best music and art ive ever made, which by saying that i guess means i AM in fact learning to love myself a little bit more xx
