There is a glorious City in the Sea.
The Sea is in the broad, the narrow streets,
Ebbing and flowing; and the salt sea-weed
Clings to the marble of her palaces.
No track of men, no footsteps to and fro,
Lead to her gates. The path lies over the Sea,
Invisible; and from the land we went,
As to a floating City -- steering in,
And gliding up her streets as in a dream,
So smoothly, silently -- by many a dome,
Mosque-like, and many a stately portico,
The statues ranged along an azure sky;
By many a pile in more than Eastern pride,
Of old the residence of merchant-kings;
The fronts of some, though Time had shattered them,
Still glowing with the richest hues of art,
As though the wealth within them had run over.

The afternoon is frozen with memories,
Radiant as ice.
The sun sets amidst the agued trembling of the leaves;
Sinking right down through the gold air
Into the arms of the sea.
And the enameled wings of the palm trees
Keep shivering, shivering
Beating the old air thin

The shape of the coconut tree above is perhaps a mirage, or else has been bent into the shape of a heart by the forces of nature, the summer"s heat...
More magical than we thought, in fact, the real world we live in is bizarre enough that we don"t need the illusion in the bottle at all.

In Sri Lanka, a faraway tropical paradise, the mighty land monitor lizard emerges from the jungle into gardens, while monkeys leap from roof to roof overhead, visible only by their shadows on the ground. By a sonata of birdsong I am awoken. I walk outside, and am greeted by palm leaves criss-crossing the sky. My vision blurred by the dappled, multicoloured light, I fix each detail onto the golden pages of my memory.
