Working with AI art sometimes feels like gazing into a pond of water. In a still pond, we see a clear, gently blurred version of ourselves staring back at us, while turbulent waters return rippled echoes of our shape. These changing reflections of ourselves are similar to images generated from data, which can be hyperrealistic depictions of the original, or images that are surreal and barely recognizable, as errors creep in. This exhibition looks at the way artists represent nature and humans, using the latest machine learning technologies to conjure seascapes, imaginary marine creatures, autumn leaves, and musings on the human form. Masks and faces akin to the grotesque rear their heads, reminding us of the early errors of these technologies and the eternal human fascination with depicting ourselves. These artists present AI as a tool to craft new reflections on perennial subjects, as well as a creative partner, conjuring new landscapes, creatures, and forms. Luba Elliott

Feral File  Reflections in the Water

Mario Klingemann&rsquo;s &ldquo;Vague Recollection&rdquo; explores the nature of memory, time, and their interplay with AI. In this work, we see a face form in the monochrome stillness, a fleeting memory of a human as rendered by a neural network, unable to commit the exact features and distinguishing particularities.  The work is based on a neural network embedded in the browser, which attempts to remember an encounter in time. As the time vector approaches the point where the recollection is the strongest for a brief moment we can observe the memory fragments forming a face only to disperse again as the vector continues its trajectory in latent space.

Shortcuts are fast leaps across information scaffolds; cartridges for accelerated time. Shortcuts imply lower costs, since they train us to become beings who are not used to staying still, pondering, or meandering. Shortcuts symbolise strategic success, and energy-saving efficiency. But in the year 2020a time of global uncertaintywe gained a new perspective on what we shortcut into. The lesson is that perhaps we need to rethink our priorities, and develop an alternative blueprint that does not prioritize shortcuts. The exhibition The Long Cut features works that investigate the remote, latent, and liminal space of technologies, and how this awareness can trigger alternative pathways and maps for our shared technological reality. Above&Below tells elegant stories about nature with code. &ldquo;Steering Pixels&rdquo; was born through a fluid simulation interpreted from a GAN, which was trained on hundreds of images of ever-changing water surfaces&mdash;data collected and sculpted by the artists. Taking computer vision to analyse motion of pixels of a neural network outcome, a fluid system initially inherits the velocity and therefore flow of the system. Using machine vision and machine learning techniques to document changing environments, computerised systems allow to not only create 1:1 replicas of environments or copies of real worlds, but allow for multiple, unexpected, and diverse perspectives.

A P13L is the atomic unit of digital and generative art. It cant be quantified. A P13L is vibrant and alive. Artists choreograph P13Ls and P13Ls possess artists. P13Ls are ideas about image-making that transcend the technology they flow through.

Each of the artists in the P13L exhibition has pushed the boundaries of digital and generative art in their own ways. As a counterpoint to the stream of technology being developed to make itself invisible, these artists foreground the materiality of their medium. And at a time when online spaces for digital and generative art are at the highest energy in over 20 years, this group of artists, who committed themselves to these fields a decade ago, remain vibrant creators. In the long tradition of kinetic art and experimental film and video, p1xelfool&rsquo;s works contain a world within themselves. We might be looking at the inside of an atom or the birth of a simulated universe &mdash; the work leaves room for broad interpretation. There&rsquo;s enough within them to trigger recognition and association, but the lack of resolution creates space for mystery. In &ldquo;k.a9&rdquo; specifically, we experience two objects rotating around one another in an endless dance of forces in balance. This software is one of a pair of p1xelfool&rsquo;s first ever generative, live-code releases. We&rsquo;re thrilled to feature this new direction on Feral File.

Event Horizon Sunsets are a class of art works generated through an algorithm which uses Perlin noise to modulate the color, shape, and convexity of a continuous surface. The sunsets are generated instantly in a practical infinity of combinations, and it is possible to write a machine learning classifier that selects the most beautiful ones. Event Horizon Sunset (Series C) follows two previous series of Sunsets, with 5 and 9 works respectively. Series C is special because some of the randomly generated Sunsets have a "close proximity".
