Nature's Cotton Candy by Steve Bennett

When I first learned about Alstrom Point, located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area of southern Utah, I knew I had to add it to my photo trek must-visit list. Alstrom Point, with an elevation of 4,685 feet, is highly regarded for its spectacular view of Lake Powell. In the spring of 2018, I experienced this remarkable vista firsthand as I stood near the edge, waiting for the sun to set and the full moon to rise.

 

The majestic view evoked a sense of awe and timelessness. In my minds eye, I saw herds of long-neck sauropods that, according to the fossil record, roamed the area from the Early Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous Periods.

 

Fast forward two hundred million years. While the moonrise was the main course, the delicate sunset forming before my eyes was a fabulous appetizer. I was glad that I took along my 20mm prime lens for the tripit was perfect for capturing the expanse of land and the sweep of sky. Within minutes, the pink hues began to wane, but the sweet taste of natures cotton candy lingered as I readied my gear for the next course.

Standing in this field I stood in awe has this storm raced towards me. This massive shelf cloud was filled with rain and large hail. The deep rumbling thunder rolled across the plains, the wind whipping against my face, these are the moments that make me feel most alive. When I am out there chasing, I feel most at home, I feel a sence of peace and calmness a place where I belong.

Salt and Mountain under magnificent skies.

September 2019 I was awarded the opportunity to live in Iceland for one month as an Artist in Residence at a small working farmhouse in the remote Westfjords. I spent my time photographing the land and the family"s winter Shepherding and Mussel processing operations. Salt is the first image introducing the larger body of work Geothermal Island, GEOIS, and is part of the traveling exhibition Westfjords Wandering.

TIMELESS

All my work revolves around the concept of time. Le Mont St Michel, to me, perfectly expresses the dichotomy between the present and the past, where the times we live in are inextricably linked to the past we come from, with their contradictions, their progresses and regressions.

Moon Drops

Context 
The multiple photographs that comprise "Moon Drops" were captured underand inspired bya full moon. I was drawn to the light dancing off the vegetation along a retaining wall near my home. The foliage was still laden with drops of water from a gentle rain earlier that day and created a magical scene with all the elements necessary for an enchanting composite image.

 

Technical

Moon Drops consists of eight photos that have been blended into one cohesive composition. The moon is a single shot taken with a 300mm telephoto lens. The seven surrounding images consist of focus-stacked photos (20-30 photos/stack) taken with macro lenses (60mm, 105mm, and 200mm). If you look at the paths of drops, you'll notice that many of the spheres are in sharp focus, thanks to the focus-stacking technique. In total, more than 200 photos went into the making of the artwork.  

 

As a final touch, I applied a light blue-purple gradient to augment the sense of magic, mystery, and wonder.

The Grand View by Steve Bennett

I took this photograph of Aguereberry Point during the soft warm light of the golden hour. The Point, named after Jean Pierre Pete Aguereberry, a French migr who worked at the nearby Eureka mine from 1905 until his passing in 1945, stands 6,433 feet above sea level in the Panamint Range. At the top of the Point, which Aguereberry called The Grand View, you can see Badwater Basin. At first blush, the shimmering basin looks as if its filled with water. Its not. The basin, 282 feet below sea level, consists of salt flats. The scene evoked a sense of awe and the sublime. On the one hand, it brought to mind Shakespeares famous quote, that "the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory." On the other, Aguereberry Point has an undeniable and timeless majesty.

M81 and M82 are 2 galaxies located near the Big Dipper.  M81 (upper right) is called the Bodes Nebula.  M82 (lower left) is called the Cigar Galaxy.  This image is HaRGB, meaning I combined regular broadband colors with hydrogen alpha (narrowband) data. The red/pink regions are where nebulae are in the galaxies and where new stars and planets might be forming.  Both are about 12 million light years from Earth.
