The illustrious computer art pioneer releases her first and only on-chain generative art project investigating three notorious letter forms that changed the conversation around digital art forever. Themes and Variations is Vera Molnrs personal reflection towards her decades-long practice with the 'machine imaginaire' in the midst of an unforeseen digital art boom brought forward through the introduction of NFTs.

Themes and Variations encompasses a collection of 500 unique generative artworks. Within these works, Molnr passionately explores ideas she has delved into since the late 1960s when she first embarked upon the realm of algorithmic art. Central to her artistic expression is the seamless integration of letters as pure abstract forms, coupled with her affinity for embracing disorder. This deliberate choice grants the machine a certain level of autonomy, allowing it to challenge and even contradict the predefined rules established by Molnr herself. Thus, through this exploration of a dynamic interplay between the artist and the machine, uncharted territories within her creative practice are unveiled.

"All these variations around letters resonate in me like music. Even though I stopped playing the piano at the age of 15, music has never left me. I immediately think of Goldberg Variations or Beethoven's Diabelli Variations on a Waltz. That's why I gave the title Theme and Variations to the latest project with the letters N, F, and T that I am working on for my first and only long form generative art project."

This piece was made while I was visiting Sudan and during the time I started meetings to build a school using the charity money collected from all the amazing collectors of Sudfah.  I was inspired by the contrast between the ubiquitous dirt and broken system of Sudan and the beautiful colorful culture and people.  The colorful forms represent to me both the long flowy garments of the ladies and the smoke and aromas rising from the unique incense and perfumes of Sudan.

25% of the proceeds will be donated toward building a school for an underdeveloped community in Sudan.

Art Blocks x Pace

Tara Donovans first-ever NFT project, titled QWERTY, comprises 500 unique, generative works that meditate on the ways that type can function as a building block for creating pattern. Donovan, whose practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, and printmaking, often explores the talismanic qualities of everyday materials and objects. The artists new NFT series is deeply engaged with her screen drawings, in which she moves, pinches, and cuts the wires of woven aluminum insect screen to extract patterns from existing grids, using a mathematical methodology to draw out the phenomenological potential of the material.

Each NFT in Donovans QWERTY series depicts rhythmic, mesmeric arrangements of a single, repeating letter or symbol represented on computer keyboards. The 26 letters and 30 symbols that make up the layered, gridded compositions of the QWERTY NFTs are rendered in varying degrees of legibility, striking a balance between recognizability and obscurity. These screen-based images take on the qualities of woven textiles, and they are the result of the artists meticulous pattern development, organization, and refinement, which she executed through algorithmic processes.

The first 56 individuals to mint QWERTY NFTs will each receive an archival pigment print of their NFT from the artist and Pace Verso. These works will be signed by Donovan. Complete terms and conditions will be available on Paces website before the projects release on October 10.

Donovans QWERTY NFT project can be understood as an extension of the eponymous book she published in 2018, which features patterns the artist forged using characters from a 1930s typewriter. Both the digital and physical iterations of QWERTY reflect Donovans interest in surface depth and perspectival mutability. Her QWERTY NFTs shapeshift and transform depending on viewers position relative to their screens, bringing ghostly shapes and figurative elements into relief in the compositions interstitial spaces. The wide range of patterns in the QWERTY NFTs includes subtle, minimalist grids; architectural forms; psychedelic motifs; and optical illusions.

Art Blocks x Bright Moments

Metropolis is a long-form generative art collection exploring the node-based systems that enable and possess modern society. These literal and theoretical systems are critical to computing, blockchains, logistics, and most apparently, the formation and function of cities. 

The project will be extended beyond online distribution via individual exhibitions at the five Bright Moments gallery locations around the world. The five primary traits  New York City, Berlin, London, Mexico City, and Los Angeles   stylistically represent their respective city. 

MECHANIC INFORMATION:
- While Metropolis has a total count of up to 1000 mints, only the first 500 will be made available for sale.  
- These first 500 editions will come with the ability to mint a second piece for free. 
- This second mint will be unique, but visually related to the firstcreating a diptych between the two. 
- To claim a second mint, the owner must generate a QR code via the Bright Moments portal and take it to the Bright Moments gallery in the city dictated by its respective city trait on the date of the city's exhibition. 
- Delegate minting of the second piece is possible. If the owner is unable to attend a show physically, they can arrange for another person to redeem. 
- Redeeming after the city's exhibition will not be allowed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

- The style of Metropolis is heavily influence by cubism and abstract expressionism. 
- Technically, the project is an attempt to emulate painting photorealistically within an on-chain algorithm. 
- Metropolis is a demanding program and modern hardware is necessary to view the live generator. Viewing the project on mobile and low-power computers will result in a lower resolution image. 

CONTROLS:
- Pressing the "C" key within the live generator will capture an image.
- Pressing the "4" key within the live generator will reload the piece in 4K resolution (HARDWARE INTENSIVE).

Phototaxis is a simulated environment populated by simple machines. After Valentino Braitenbergs 1984 book Vehicles, there are four kinds of machines with different wiring and behaviors: Explorers, Aggressors, Lovers, and Cowards. Each line charts the history of one machines movement. The core of this code was the foundation for my MicroImage series of works dating back to 2001. Ive worked on it in fits and starts since then, and in 2021 it was further developed for Art Blocks. Evidence of the rabbit's role throughout history emerges in ancient documents, from Eastern block printing to Mughal Empire paintings to Medieval parchments, and mythic dot paintings. The rabbit has always been with us.

RABBIT TAKEOVER  is based on my irascible, aggressive, much-loved pet rabbit Pickles, who sadly passed away as this was being developed.

By placing our trust in any of the "future techs" to solve todays environmental problems, we run the risk of postponing the actions that mattered. Carbon capture is one of those technologies weve engaged in to give us an impression of action; perhaps, unconsciously, in order to cover up our anguish, our helplessness or our guilt. 

Yet we need to keep moving forward. Art has this kind of energy, charismatic and unifying. If I believe little in technology to save humanity, I keep hope in humanity, in its conscience, in the universality of its love. If only one power is given to artists, it is that of being able to touch, sometimes, the hearts of men.

Loie Hollowells first-ever NFT project, titled Contractions, comprises 280 unique, generative works that center on the artists embodied experiences with childbirth. Based on Hollowells Split Orb sculptural paintings, which she began creating following the birth of her second child, the Contractions NFTs feature two bifurcated orbs situated one on top of the other, with the top orb representing the artists brain and the lower orb signifying her pregnant belly and cervix. This new series brings Hollowells explorations of bodily landscapeswith a particular focus on sex, pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhoodto the digital realm. Contractions will be presented on Pace Gallerys booth at West Bund Art & Design in Shanghai from November 10 to 13. As an extension of the project, Hollowell will create several new paintings of Contractions NFTs.

Hollowell, who has developed a distinctive iconography of geometric and organic forms as part of her painting and drawing practices, was the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai in 2021, and her solo show Loie Hollowell: Tick Tock Belly Clock continues through May 8, 2023 at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis. Her work can be found in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; the Long Museum, Shanghai; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and other international institutions. 

There will be 11 scenes in the Contractions NFT series: closed orbs signifying the final stage of pregnancy, just before childbirth, and orbs featuring one of ten set degrees of openings at their centers, representing each of the ten centimeters of cervix dilation required to begin the second pushing stage of labor. With variations in their hues, saturations, and textures, the orbs reflect, on a conceptual level, the artists shifting state of mind and body during childbirth, with each of the colors describing her ranging emotional states.

The total NFTs in the Contractions series reflects the average number of days in a full-term pregnancy. The colors of these NFTs are drawn from a wide spectrum, from grayscalewhich Hollowell has never previously incorporated in her workto a vivid neon palette. The expansive possibilities of color in the NFTs situate Hollowells abstractions in a new light, influencing her approach to painting and drawing.
