Synesthesia is the audiovisual creation of electronic dance musician, PLS&TY.  PLS&TY is burgeoning into the electronic dance music scene with his unique sound: languid bass, captivating vocals and enough upbeat melodies to make anybody feel good. His music has amassed over 100 million listens across streaming platforms, and has been placed in nationally airing television commercials, including a Hershey"s Chocolate campaign which has been viewed over 1 BILLION times. Synesthesia visually proffers a mandala-like effect, in sequence with blissful audio notes & tones over fluctuating scales & octaves, generated entirely at random.

Torrent is about being washed away but not lost.

Inspired by residual evidence of torrential downpours, floods and derailed rivers as well as thrown paint and ink, cathartically applied for the purpose of merely having watched it land, streak, smear and drip; just to leave a mark.

Textures of fabric, concrete, paper and marble fused by a tempest... now desiccated and faded, bleached and marred by debris washed on after exposing moments of life. Moments lost; etched incomplete into the landscape.

A nostalgic and possibly misguided love song fusing frantic rhythmic action, erosion and history in a way only time can compose after the violence has long ceased and we are left to excavate the damage and beauty of what can"t be harnessed, only experienced or interpreted after the fact, even if any resulting conclusions are fictions filled with contradiction.

Less about truth, more about just having a story that we believe makes sense of it all. Rarely are things black and white.

Torrent is about coming to terms with the past so we can understand the present and navigate the future. In a sense, we"re talking about trauma processing, the imperfection of memory and how history changes with time and reflection.

Exploring the Creative Process of Generative Art

My approach to creating generative artwork typically involves a well-defined idea, concept, and end goal. However, for this particular project, I decided to abandon preconceived notions and embrace an exploratory mindset. Allowing myself to just go with the flow (field) on this project allows me to explore my work in new ways. I wanted this project to be pure artistic expression.

The interesting shapes  that comprise the artwork appear to be assembling themselves in a dynamic and cohesive manner. This interpretation inspired the selection of the title, which captures the essence of the work and invites viewers to interpret it in their own unique way.

Optimistic nihilism embraces the idea that life"s inherent meaninglessness is, in fact, positive. The conflict between intrinsic meaninglessness and our search for meaning is both absurd and liberating. We are free to create our own meaning yet ultimately, there is none. By acknowledging both the futility and the opportunity, we can find joy.

These images have no specific meaning yet often they seem purposed. Each output evokes an emotional tone, such as calm, erratic, troubled, bold, mysterious or cheerful. We are frequently reminded of something or can identify shapes like birds, houses or spaceships. Our innate tendency to find patterns and meaning is evident.

The algorithm uses geometry and rules but has been given as much freedom as possible to create varied compositions which contain both chaos and order. The compositions are constructed using node layouts, which are connected to form shapes. Connection is a recurrent theme in our pursuit of meaning - manifested in pattern formation, our relationships and the interconnectedness of the universe. The shapes are duplicated and modified through rotation, mirroring, and scaling to build up structure and chaotic form. If an output appears too sparse, an extra stage of manipulation is applied. Keypresses reveal the components, allowing viewers to observe the underlying mathematical structure of the composition. How does this insight influence our perception of meaning?

The meaning communicated by each piece is subjective, shaped by the viewer"s own experiences interacting with the work. The artist aspires to connect with her audience by discovering the meanings they derive from the outputs we have yet to encounter.
