Plottables Flex

Instructions for Defacement is a generative art project developed for release on plottables.io, in which NFTs of unique pen plotter instructions are created upon mint. Each Instruction, which is represented by an SVG, is designed to be interpreted by modern pen plotting software and drawn on an area equal to 5.8125" x 2.34252". All instructions that cannot be executed by a pen plotter are designed to be performed manually.   Defacing US currency is a federal crime, and may be punishable with up to six months imprisonment in addition to fines. Neither the Artist nor Plottables LLC condone defacing, mutilating, cutting, disfiguring, perforating, or otherwise damaging US currency.  By purchasing an Instruction token the collector implicitly assumes full legal responsibility for the defacement of currency in their possession, and agrees to hold the Artist nor Plottables LLC harmless from all claims, losses, liabilities, public prosecutions, costs, and costs associated with this project.  All Instructions exist simply as and artistic exercise, and collectors are strictly discouraged from executing said Instructions using the following tools: Axidraw pen plotters, fine-point pens (ex. Micron, LePen, Stabilo), felt tip and highlighter pens (ex. Sharpie), scissors, and lighters. The token thumbnail represents a simulation of what this may look like if executed on the pictorial area of the United States one-dollar bill.  As a token of gratitude, each collector is entitled to a $1.00 rebate, issued in the form of a crisp bank note, when a request is made to the Artist in person. Artist Bingo

Artist Bingo turns my life and career as an artist into a game of bingo. On each bingo card, the usual numbers are replaced by various tropes, myths, and milestones that constitute an artist's life, or our collective imagination thereof. The tropes are then stamped off over time as I, unintentionally, complete them in the course of my lifefive in a row for bingo! Each winner will receive a handmade physical copy of their artwork.

In rendering these tropes explicit, the project acts as living examination of our stereotypes of artists (tortured/starving artist, eccentric/creative genius, etc.) and the way this mythos is packaged into a speculative financial container through art.

REDUCE

REDUCE is DRAUPs digital shapewear collection, designed in collaboration with Patternbase.

Through a line of generative garments, the collection comments on digital dysmorphia by extrapolating the idea of shapewear to absurdity.

Where physical shapewear compresses the body for the appearance of a perfect form, REDUCE compresses those same target areas into tightly packed voxels, allowing the wearer to 'fit in' online by reducing their resolution.

**Intimit**, Stefano Contiero's latest collection, explores the themes of intimacy and discovery. The work emphasizes uncovering the deeper aspects of our relationships and suggesting that genuine, meaningful connection can only be fully experienced when the veil of surface appearances is lifted.

Building a relationship is often considered a process of construction, where two individuals come together to form a bond. However, the process can also be seen as deconstruction, where both partners must tear down the walls they have built around themselves, exposing their vulnerabilities and allowing themselves to be known.

Contiero's works feature open fields of color that melt together to create an effect reminiscent of marbling. Vibrant hues are subtly aged with a patina, enhancing each piece's visual impact and giving it a sense of depth and movement. Through Contiero's striking compositions, he invites us to consider the role physical and emotional obstacles play in shaping our experiences of intimacy. Only through time and deep exploration can these barriers be removed.

Seating Arrangements by Luke Shannon

Woodblock printing uses a single wooden carving (aka the matrix) to produce multiple prints that each have their own subtle variation in texture and registrationin this way, the matrix is the true source of new work.

In Lukes algorithmic process, a single body of code produces many unique matrices which represent related but distinct perspectives on a single idea. A systems based approach to creation leaves space for things to emerge that the artist had not conceived. In its best form, it also enables the creation of artwork with complete unity of concept, system, and manifestation as they become one and the same.

In Seating Arrangements, Shannon highlights both the matrix and its product, the print. The algorithm generates a digital file that serves as the blueprint. These unique instructions are then executed by a CNC machine to carve out the distinct sections of the chair. The carved wooden slab is inked, simulta- neously creating the print and painting the final chair. Finally these pieces are assembled to create a free standing chair entirely from the matrixwithout any hardware. The print becomes a record of an inter- mediate event and the matrix is shared as the final assembled sculptural piece of furniture.

In this series, the generative algorithm does more than ornament the final structure: it is central to the very essence of the chair. The artist defined 220 short, straight segments of wood that can be included or excluded by the algorithm and can intersect with up to 13 other segments. The repeating geometry of the design allows the viewer to see the positive form of the chair in the included segments and the nega- tive form of the chair in the absence of those that are not.

The range of possibilities for this algorithm is 2^220, or 1,684,996,666,696,914,987,166,688,442,938- 726,917,102,321,526,408,785,780,068,975,640,576 unique chairs. The incomprehensible multitude of potential chairs elevates one of Shannons core questions in the work: what is a chair? Many of the potential outcomes are not sittable, but does that exclude it from being a chair if it still registers as one visually?

If you were to overlap all of the chairs, there would be no single element that is shared by all. The viewer is denied an understanding of the platonic form of a chair, as there is no one common feature that can be distilled as the essence of chair within this series.

The removed segments insert a new dimension to the relationship between body, consciousness, and object. So much of what we come into contact with on a daily basis is designed to recede in our minds consider pain free UI/UX or an office chair. We constantly interact with engineered systems that do not assert themselves. Their recession can mean forgetting that they exist at all, and forgetting that they are designed for their own purposes outside of our wants and needs.

The unique generative structures and simple materiality of Seating Arrangements mean these chairs do not disappear, but rather insert themselves into your consciousness. You must think of how to sit down, perhaps where to put your arm. This awareness of your body and your relationship to the piece reminds you that it has its own identity.

*Interwoven* is a long-form generative art series created by Emily Xie as Vol. 4 of the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts Remembrance of Things Future blockchain initiative. The project is a collaboration with Cactoid Labs in support of LACMAs Art and Technology Lab. 

Made entirely with code, *Interwoven* draws inspiration from the 1986 Bullseye Quilt by Martha Lou Jones in LACMAs collection, meditating on the quilts underlying tension between the computational and handmade through a distinctive patchwork style. The algorithm uses randomness to give rise to creature-like forms in order to embody the narrative elements so integral to the tradition of quilt-making.
