The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Cactoid Labs present Remembrance of Things Future Vol. 2: Monica Rizzolli: A Tour of Hypothetical Waterfalls, a generative code-based series created in dialogue with Katsushika Hokusai's iconic 19th c. woodblock prints, A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls in LACMA's collection. Remembrance of Things Future engages artists working on the blockchain to reimagine the museum's collection. Building on the museum's experimentations with art and tech, LACMA and Cactoid Labs invited pioneering digital artists to select objects from the museum's holdings and create new digital editions inspired by a diverse selection of artworks. Utilizing tools such as generative code, and dynamic software the artists created unique works that engage histories across various eras. Following the museum's tradition of collaborating with artists to create limited editions, a percentage of the proceeds from these new digital editions will support LACMA's Art + Tech Lab.

I had no idea what that would mean.
That, for now, all we have left of our home in Sudan is our memories.

The broken system officially broke,
And the people took the broken roads right out of town.

Were the ladies dressed in bright colors and patterns as they escaped to the sound of bombing?
When a Sudanese home goes up in smoke does it smell like sandalwood incense?
Do the walls covered in hopeful graffiti still stand?
Does the mango tree still bear fruit, and does it remember our family?

Has the war reached the school we built? Do the walls still stand?
How many years will it be before the school system reopens?
Will the idea that a school would be used for ... school  
be a mere memory of a good intention?

When the rebel army broke into our abandoned home,
Ransacked everything the Sudanese part of our family owns,
Then went upstairs, and found the beginnings of a learning center,
Intended to giving young bright Sudanese people a window into the world of blockchain and AI,
Any chance they didnt steal everything?
Or is our learning center ... a mere memory ... of a good intention?

When the rebel army chose to live in our abandoned home for a term,
Did they feel and sense our memory echoing off the walls?
If we are ever able to return, will we feel and sense the memory of them?

If my niece-in-law (who is two  or maybe three now) has already forgotten the anthem,
and refers to the family home as the house of shooting,
what does that mean for the future of Sudan?

If all the displaced Sudanese people are able to hold onto their memories,
treasure them, and someday bring them back to Omdurman,
Can Sudan be regenerated ... like a forest after a wildfire ...
perhaps stronger and less broken than it was before?

_Bakhoor Assandal_ is an animated generative series made in JavaScript and GLSL. The name refers to the incense made from sandalwood that is common in Sudan. While sandaliya is the oil of sandalwood used as perfume, Bakhoor Assandal is the incense, burned on coals, made from the same wood. One could say it is the same substance gone up in smoke.

This project is a continuation of _Sandaliya_, a series that interweaves personal memories and familial connections in Sudan against the growing conflict. In April 2023, a civil war ignited, and many were forced to evacuate. _Bakhoor Assandal_ uses JavaScript and GLSL to create outputs in constant disarray. With a particular focus on movement, the algorithm builds layer by layer, with each pixel in perpetual shift, never replicating its past form  a testament to lifes relentless change. Like the ephemeral smoke of burning incense, we must embrace the flow, knowing we will remember the scent.

Some questions that are always at the forefront of my art practice: how do my images relate to the images that precede and surround them; what expectations are we bringing to images, and how are these expectations established & reinforced; what purpose do these expectations serve and how can we interact with these expectations?

AI image generators are a fascinating new tool for exploring these questions because they create images based upon a dataset of hundreds of millions of preexisting imagery but are otherwise unfettered by the preexisting expectations of visual culture. That is, they make new images based on predictions from all the images (and image tags) that precede them. However, they are not otherwise bound by human logic or cultural codes and therefore make images that reflect these codes in surprising and often challenging ways, like a funhouse mirror.

For the past quarter century the British-born, Los Angeles-based artist has been building a highly technical multimedia sculptural practice incorporating algorithmic lighting, two-way mirrors and metal forms mimicking sacred geometries: three-dimensional objects that give physical form to unity consciousness, the infinite and other secrets of the universe.
To create the works in this collaboration with the Gallery of Digital Assets, James and his studio are re-investigating the five sacred geometries known as the Platonic solidsthe tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron and dodecahedroneach of which embodies the respective elemental powers of fire, earth, wind, the water, and the void.
While collectors can acquire each of the five platonic solid forms as Tier 1 NFTs, they can also choose to burn themliterally deleting the tokens from existenceto potentially acquire newer, rarer forms. This burning of NFTs is a direct reference to Jamess monumental 2008 sculpture, .

The BBC offers one such dataset; 16,000+ sound effects and their arbitrary, descriptive titles, such as large bird taking off, and electric monotony. I feed my RNN the BBC's text and it engages in a game of probability to create its own outputs with surprising results.

In other words, I move from sound, to text, to AI, to text, to image. As the technology improves, I am engaging in an ever-challenging battle of creative authorship with the machine.

In desperation the remaining people on earth build a series of spaceships and try to depart the planet. Some fail at launch and go down in flames. Others warp to the past and engage with steampunk battleships, or warp to the future to face highly evolved deadly plants.

Research on the plants reveals a way forward: using the powerful psychedelic powers of plant extracts, the ships open neon hyperspace tunnels and travel to a distant earth future. Some land in the frozen north, some land in the tropical equator, and some land in the desert.

Seeing the spiritual purity of the new settlers, angels arrive and raise the humans to a new level of psychic oneness.

An extension of his ongoing Caryatid series (2004), Paul Pfeiffers first NFT collection, Vs., transports the viewer to the boxing ring utilizing found footage from two historic boxing matchesPacquiao vs. Horn and Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. To create each piece, Pfeiffer has taken existing televised footage and digitally erased Pacquiaos opponent, leaving the viewer to witness a man viscerally struggling, resisting, suffering, and at times prevailing over an unseen foe. The series consists of two long-form video works (each an edition of 5 plus 1 AP) and 150 short-form clips (each unique and variable in duration)both of which come with file formats for image and video. For its April/May 2023 issue, Fortune and Panamanian artist Ix Shells created a custom art piece for the cover of Fortune: Crypto Climbs Back From The Worst Year Ever that is now an NFT. Using Touch Designer, Yard coded the pixels in the artwork to expand into intricate geometric shapes that shift up and down.
