Bright Moments Flex

Welcome to "Kinoko Dreams," a collection of Japanese artworks inspired by my adventures in the magical world of mushroom picking in Japan.

Imagine spending weekends in the autumn, not at home, but in the forests around Tokyo with my dad's work buddies. It seemed a bit strange at first  choosing colleagues over family during free time. But in Japan, work is more than just a job; it's like a second family, a big part of social life.

Our journeys took us to places like Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park and the Okutama region, where diverse flora, including lots of mushrooms, awaited. Together, we collected these little treasures as a way to bond, relax, and shake off stress.

While picking mushrooms, my friends shared captivating stories about Japanese myths tied to these fungi. One story stood out  the Matsutake myth. It's a pine mushroom symbolizing good fortune and happiness, especially during the beautiful autumn harvest season.

We also discovered other awesome mushrooms like Shiitake, Maitake, and Enoki. Each had its own story and importance, even in Japanese cooking. Recipes were shared, making our mushroom adventures not just about picking but also about creating delicious meals together.

All these incredible memories sparked the idea to turn my experiences into art. "Kinoko Dreams" is a way to share the joy, stories, and magic of mushrooms with you. These artworks, filled with love and nostalgia, will be released during NFT Paris with Bright Moments, inviting you to join the whimsical journey of "Kinoko Dreams."

Some questions that are always at the forefront of my art practice: how do my images relate to the images that precede and surround them; what expectations are we bringing to images, and how are these expectations established and reinforced; what purpose do these expectations serve and how can we interact with these expectations?

AI image generators are a fascinating new tool for exploring these questions because they create images based upon a dataset of hundreds of millions of preexisting imagery but are otherwise unfettered by the preexisting expectations of visual culture. That is, they make new images based on predictions from all the images (and image tags) that precede them. However, they are not otherwise bound by human logic or cultural codes and therefore make images that reflect these codes in surprising and often challenging ways, like a funhouse mirror. There is a beautiful collapse of category distinctions and a dynamic interplay between un-indoctrinated naivety and an appreciation of precedent.

Still Remember

Still Remember is a relational art using NFT. The project stemmed from happy memory of artist at a beach seven years ago. To make the moment eternal, the photo taken at that moment was stored as a JPEG image on the blockchain. You can mint the snapshot as NFT by attaching fragments of your still-remembered happy memories (Emojis) to the transaction. This memory exchange ceremony becomes an important part of the art. The NFT is glitch art that corrupts over time; it can be temporarily restored by transfer, but if unmoved for three years, it becomes irreparable. Three years later, will you still remember this ceremony?

Clonism explores cloning as a common, everyday reality, a banality that is both near and distant. It diverges from the typical, grim, metallic clones by adopting a pastel pop aesthetic and offering a new visual language. This collection redefines perceptions of cloning in popular culture and science, distinguishing it from traditional representations.  
  
Both unsettling and absurd at the same time, the collection symbolizes the banality and redundancy of advanced technology. The pieces represent clones as mere products of consumer society rather than scientific marvels, seamlessly integrating into the mundane. It critiques consumer society and the trivialization of individuality through mass production, reflecting on a world where everything, even humanity, is commodified and disposable.  
  
The use of soft pastels contrasts against the eerie sterility of cloning technology, revealing an absurdity in existence. The color palette and the deadpan stillness highlight the non-functionality of the clones, evoking an artificiality. It"s as if we"ve become so adept at creating life that we"ve forgotten to imbue it with meaning.  
  
Alice Gordon is a raw AI maximalist. She is a part of the esteemed "Post Photographic Perspectives" artist roster curated by the Fellowship. She has gained recognition for her collections Disproportionate Anxiety and Cognitive Behaviour. She has a passion for the surrealist movement and calls her distinctive style absurdist surreal lonerism. Her art occupies the silent gaps in conscious thoughts, probing the quietest corners of existence and repression. Her creative process is a mixture of experimentation and spontaneity. She is on a journey to reflect the human psyche in a distinctive way.
