Glimpses of the Ethereal by Andrs Hernndez

Loss, memory, and dreams are the central themes of my work. My constant goal is to capture the ephemeral, disconcerting, melancholic, and surreal nature of dreams and memories through the distortion and destruction of analog and digital images. I have always been fascinated by the power that dream images and memories have on me. This fascination has led me to experiment with photography, trying to represent the atmospheres of these intangible worlds. The use of digital intervention and artificial intelligence has allowed me to create these dreamscapes, where vision is rarely clear, and identities are blurred by the noise of the mind. The physical destruction of the image serves as an analogy to the ephemeral and finite condition of memory. I work with the tools of the present while staying firmly anchored to the past.

Machine-hearted

This collection explores the complex umbrella of what feels intuitive to humans yet is challenging to interpret or analyze for machines and algorithms. In scientific research, there are usually only seven emotions (happy, sad, angry, neutral, scared ...). Still, its difficult for us to imagine feeling only one kind of emotion with our entire essence. What we mostly experience is an unexpected, conflicting combination of many elements. Emotion, the most primitive part of human essence, is also surprisingly difficult to analyze for machines. The AI systems still struggle with emotion classification even though they have established ground-breaking success elsewhere.  
This project is an artists attempt to explore the large AI models strengths and shortcomings in expressing complex human emotions in visual form. The data it was trained on has many biases and stereotyped emotional expressions, but can it also capture some more nuanced human feelings? Or is our emotion reflected in the stone-cold interpretation of the machine? And our mind becomes the medium for the sentiment to materialize. Finally, the works are about the dissonance we might feel when reality does not conform to our expectations when it conflicts with our emotions. Can emotion ever be Artificial?

Imperfections by Kalis

Attempts at perfection are destined to fail. This project embraces the impossibility of perfection in human execution and digitally simulates these imperfections.

In his abstract minimalist work, visual artist Wouter Kalis steers away from meaning. Horizontal black and white paper strips are placed on colored paper panels and one strip dictates the placing of the next. However, each attempt at perfection ends in failure. These mistakes have now become the signature of his work and contribute to the depth of content.

Digital representations of minimalist art can be executed to perfection but are less interesting to look at. In this project, artist Wouter Kalis and his son, software engineer Rosco Kalis, together attempt to recreate the human touch in digital art, the imperfection. 

The project displays computer-generated digital works similar to the physical works made out of paper. The colors of the digital panels are directly derived from the colors of the paper used for the physical work. The digital works can thus be reproduced using real paper.  The Wiiides collection is inspired in part by Alvin Lucier and his 1969 work titled I am Sitting in a Room. The artwork is a recording of his voice played back in a room, re-recorded, and played back repeatedly, until nothing remained but distortion. Through transactions on the Ethereum blockchain, Wiiides will stretch and become distorted until just a few horizontal lines of color remain. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of economic activity or transactions on a blockchain, but more as a way to smooth out any traits these NFTs may have. Wiiides are a fully on chain artwork, meaning all data and artwork are stored on the Ethereum blockchain. Wiiides draws its data directly from the on chain CryptoPunks, and programmatically edits the data based on the growth rate of each Wiiide and the number of transfers. 

 Wiiides can be understood in a copypasta Post-Modern Waluigi-analysis, in which Wiiides are the ultimate example of a collection shaped by the signifier. Wiiides as a collection can only be seen in mirror images; lost in a hall of mirrors they are a reflection of a reflection of a reflection. You start with CryptoPunks, the wholesome iconic punks, you reflect them to create On-chain CryptoPunks, the same thing but the data is on chain. You invert CryptoPunks to create CryptoPhunks, punks turned septic and libertarian, then you reflect the inversion in the reflection: you create a collection who can only exist in reference to others. Wiiides is the true nowhere collection, without the other collections they reflect, invert and parody they have no reason to exist. Wiiides identity only comes from what and who they are not, without a wider frame of reference they are nothing. Wiiides is not a collection unto itself. In a world where our identities are shaped by our warped relationships to brands and commerce we are all wiiide.
