After some immeasurable amount of time these facts were forgotten and after another immeasurable amount of time that star began to die. Even so, life Inside this simulation progressed, and on one planet some of that life progressed enough to form a government. Art Blocks

When I was working in graphic design and immersed in typography, I spent a year and a half designing this 2. A personal obsession, I drew and redrew it hundreds of times until I felt it reached the perfect form in balance, weight, and drama.

This generative series revisits my captivation with this character object, using the algorithm as a tool for continued obsession and exploration. I want people to experience this collection and never see a 2 in the same way again. I also want to remind viewers that exquisiteness can exist in any mundane thing.

My background in graphic design and typography is ingrained in how I think. Regardless of medium, I have always been a designer of iteration, exhaustively trialing possibilities within a set of constraints to uncover the best way, or the most ways. Twos takes a perfected form and puts it to a further test. Different outputs situate the form in different contexts, look at it askew, or emphasize isolated parts of it for endless results.

The texture within the collection is inspired by low resolution effects (pixelation) and textures that arise from analog printmaking techniques and pen lines. It blends the hand-drawn nature of my original 2 with the power of obsessive exploration only possible with computer generative iteration. Layers of tiny squares, under and above the characters, are used to mimic the texture of a pen or a stamp. Found in much of my work, these visible pixels represent the physical module upon which digital art is created - and by calling back to pixel art, act as a reminder that code is still a craft, and the generated image isnt far from the artists hand.

Beyond the beauty of the form, the number two is a special quantity because it implies possibilities beyond itself. A system containing zero or one elements is inert. Two creates an interaction, a dyad, and implies the possibility of more than two  an expanding system. In computer programming, this is expressed as the "zero, one, infinity" rule. The two represents a potentially endless continuation.

Each feature in the collection represents either the analog or the digital journey of this character. Some compositions render each symbol as linework, reminiscent of its earliest hand drawn form. Others render it as the solid numeral, completed after its long journey of iteration. Some compositions are gridded, others are organic and loose. Some are contained by a frame, others are open and unrestrained.

Color enters a few outputs: the mark of new technological tools like the first colored ink in printing, or the move from black and white to digital screens. The brightest hues used depend on light emittance of the screen and wouldnt translate exactly when printed in standard inks. But in a further application of constraint, most outputs are neutral in color, keeping the focus on the formal obsession with this small, beautiful character.

It all began in 1987 when I gifted my first art to a friend. Since then, I've shared my art with as many friends as possible. Inspired by the Web3 community, Im happy to announce my limited Open Edition, FRENS. Its dedicated to friends I've made, and art I've created in real life. The collection is one piece with infinite color palettes of the same piece; all are 1/1 although some are much more rare.
Over the past two years, I've met many of you. Starting with Clubhouse in 2021, we forged friendships during the pandemic. As the world re-opened, our journey continued to events nationwide. I shared my art with Frens at each place through drawings and live paintings.   Last fall, we built a vibrant and supportive community with my project, The Stoics. We learned Art always wins.
All of these experiences inspired me to create FRENS. With this limited open edition, you will receive unique artwork, just like my live drawings. Art is for celebration. Art is for gratitude. Art is for Frens.

Art Blocks Explorations

marfaMESH is an event-driven generative art experiment that took place over the course of Marfa 2023, Sept 21st to 24th. To participate attendees were required to download the marfaMESH app developed by Shane Richardson (Breath You, Ouroboros) and wear a NFC Card lanyard powered by IYK. Scanning other peoples lanyards built a social graph of interactions that created personalized artworks for each participant that evolved throughout the event. When scanning, the app prompted users to take a picture from which colors and basic forms were abstracted and fed into the emerging artwork. Interactions nodes are clustered based on eleven key geo locations and there is a night day mode based on time of last interaction.  The projects primary objective was to serve as an icebreaker to help bring about connections between people that wouldnt have met otherwise. 

It is hoped that this project is an example of how generative art can be used to create highly personalized art chronicles of an event. Art that helps to preserve memories and create a treasured artifact thats an extension of the ticket stub or merch item we are all familiar with. It"s my belief that generative art has inherent properties that enable it to provide a new class of art that is part infographic; memorabilia; social graph; personal story and proof of participation. I can see a future in which a person"s inner and outer worlds can be expressed in an evolving, responsive and interactive artwork. These life-artworks may meld in real time with life-artworks from friends and family or as large community expressions. 

A global expression of all the data collected will be created and auctioned as a one of one in the coming year. While it might seem that the individual outputs in this series will have the greatest value and meaning to the co-creators, a single collective expression of the event may have more value and meaning to art culture as a whole. Profits from this auction will be reinvested into the continued exploration of this approach of which marfaMESH has served as a compelling early proof-of-concept.

2037 America is a solarpunk utopia, but terms and conditions apply.
On the surface, this is a world of abundance. Many of humanity's current problems have been solved. Climate change is under control, and people have access to all kinds of renewable resources. Products, energy and food can be printed, generated or grown in an instant - just as long as you can afford to buy the copy-protected versions from Prota, a company that controls much of the nation's resources, not to mention the force of robot security Marshals that patrol the streets, checking nothing is printed illegally.
Like many Americans, the main problem for our hero and their family is rampant inequality. An ever-smaller circle of elites get richer, while working people struggle to pay for the renewable resources they could theoretically get for almost nothing, if a handful of companies didn't block access to them.
All this changes when our teenage hero hacks Broadside, their favorite AR game, and unwittingly breaks the copy protection not just on the game, but on everything Prota controls. Suddenly anything can be illegally printed, from EMP blasters to vehicles to solar panels, and all hell breaks loose. Prota strikes back, desperate to contain the hack. Our hero is left with no choice but to escape with the only people willing to protect them - the shadowy resistance movement that wants to overthrow Prota.
