new wave is my genesis music nft.

new wave is a coming of age, 80s inspired track which dives into the pressures that are faced when transitioning from innocence into a party filled adulthood. it also brings to light the tug of war that substances and alcohol create from within and how eventually one side must win. in this instance, i end the track with a cry for help begging to be taken back into the lifestyle i thrived in as a child before this spiritual warfare began.

i'm so excited to share my first music nft with you and for it to be a song that has a lot of meaning to me. thank you to all of you that have supported me since day 1. i would not be here without you.

The past few months have been a bit of a transition period for me. Last year, I had both personal wins and losses. I lost a few grandparents in 2021, but also got engaged to the love of my life. Ive reflected on what balance and peace mean to me and continue to re-define that for myself in my late 20s. It explores that feeling, but as celebration. 

I went through a months long period of not creating any new McClenney material after my album last year. This was one of the first things Ive made this year since being back. I believe NFTs give artists the opportunity to write and tell their narrative on their own terms.

Ive been an independent artist my entire career by choice and this freedom has always been important to me. Were entering a new era and its an honor to drop peaces.1 as my first NFT. Written, produced and mixed by me, I truly loved writing this one. hope you enjoy it.

hi my name is ben :) i am an artist & producer based in philadelphia. i have been making music in the same corner of my parents basement for as long as i can remember. i started releasing music in late 2019 - i had been writing & producing for other artists for years but nothing ever felt good enough or special enough or me enough to release myself. i was a senior in college and terrified of failure but more terrified of entering the real world without a career. i will always remember how liberating and validating those first few releases were - i dont naturally share a lot but i fell in love with the challenge of being vulnerable in public

and then COVID hit - all of the stability and validation that i had cherished began to fade. while my friends were starting new lives in new cities with new jobs, i was moving back in with my parents. a lot of the anxiety and self doubt that i had kept at bay for so long crept up - i spent a lot of time in 2021 confronting the baggage that comes with pursuing a creative life. and i spent a lot of time writing about how music & my career ambitions have played into past relationships 

she was also pursuing a creative career - that was our glue but also our downfall. it is comforting to be with someone who shares your dreams and insecurities. but it can also be intense. and confusing. it wasnt until i sat down to write with my friend jono (julius black) that the line could i fix your heart if i fix mine? fell out and things began to make sense - trying to love someone who is just like you is hard

driving into the sun

daddy's money was designed as an all expenses paid trip for you and your friends to fly to sonic paradise. made with only luxury materials from London, Paris, New York, and Amalfi, there's no better way to bring you and your special someone to that sweet, summer soaked place you could only dream of before.

it was my last day in Italy and i had reserved a 125cc Vespa to take around town exploring Naples. when i got to the rental place though, i was informed they had messed up and rented the scooter to someone else. the only one they had left was 300cc, and was ready to be picked up a few miles away at the airport. i had met this girl while i was in croatia that ended up in italy with us, and since she had nothing to do that day she asked to tag along for whatever roads my two wheels ended up on. so we hopped in a Fiat and went to the airport to grab the freeway legal Vespa.

it was there that i found out that the Amalfi Coast was 40 minutes away, and since i had been dreaming of riding a moped down its winding roads since i was a kid, i took one look at my co-pilot and told her to hold on tight. 

we followed the Italian road signs as best we could and after making a few wrong turns we ended up in Amalfi, drinking Aperol Spritzes in the ocean. we went all the way to Sorento, after after another Aperol we made the impulse decision to get matching Vespa tattoos.

by the time we finished, it was about an hour til sundown, so we started making our way back to Naples for dinner with some friends. Naples is more or less West of Amalfi, which meant i was literally driving into the sun. i was nervous and crazy focused, and this song started looping in my head. i asked olivia to take my phone out and start a voice memo, and right there, on the highway of Naples, driving into the sun was born. i didn't change a single word from that initial recording, which i ended up sampling throughout the song.

this is the last song on daddy's money, but daddy's money has no ending. daddy's money is infinite, and daddy's money is for the people. long live daddy's money.

In the Leaves

I wrote 'In the Leaves' about a dream I had before I decided to quit my stable, full-time design job.

In the dream I kept waking up outside  on the sidewalk in San Francisco, and later in the leaves by a road. I kept choosing that over my bed, and it felt surprisingly calm to wake up outside of my home.

I had a session with Benji Cormack and we talked about this dream and how it seemed to mirror my life choice of staying in the comfort of a full-time job or leaving to focus on music and being satisfied with less.

I quit the job and now I've put out the song.

"I'm waking in the leaves again
Under street signs, never needed more.
Mapping out the turns I take
When I sleepwalk, why's it feel like home?"

Ive arrived at a conclusion after years of self adulation and deprecation; growing up is addressing and overcoming the trauma from your past. Until then youre just a kid with extra responsibilities. Cherry was the discovery of and exploration of that realization, and I tried my best to organize it not in the order that the events happened but by the progress of the emotional growth. 

Jersey was the infancy of it all. I had in my hand the heart of a really sweet girl and I wasnt ready to give her mine fully cause it belonged to someone else. I had spread myself too thin. I had thrown her into the wash cycle of never quite cleaned laundry and spun us around. But Id done it for the last time. When she told me she wasnt going to hang around and get hurt I didnt try to stop her from leaving even though I wanted her around, I knew in my heart it wasnt fair to either of us. But shell always have a piece of me. And here it is.

I had this idea sitting on my hard drive for more than a year, but luckily Rob  someone I look up to  took a chance at helping me finish it.

A genuine but intricate mixture of me and Rob"s sounds.

FROM THE START #13

Thomas Jack

The Initial idea for No Landing started with a grungy bass line made on an old vintage Memorymoog. This bass line sparked my creative energy, and I started to build out the track with drums, synths and continued expanding on that initial bass line. I arrived at a sound that seemed simple, but still sounded crisp and full-toned. The track was pure, so I didnt feel it needed to be overcomplicated and oversaturated with wasteful production. To the ear, the elements of No Landing are stripped back, which helps encapsulate the energy I wanted the song to exude. 

This single started with production, and I eased into the lyrics, letting the smooth gliding beat serve as the tracks core conceptnever forcing a single word. Ultimately, this track has a sonic, unhurried sound that makes listeners feel like theyre floating, never worrying about landing back on the ground.

"Heaven on Earth" is a song about the power of your imagination. A story of two friends who escape reality together, and build a blissful world of love and fantasy with a little help from a magic mushroom. A dream sequence takes them on a journey deep within, through moments of self discovery and conversations with their ancestors. Throughout their journey they come to find an understanding and appreciation of the very world they left behind. They realize that this world we live in is a beautiful one, and we must all do our part in preserving it, to experience a true heaven on earth.
