End Transmissions is a collection based on a memory. Growing up, I can recall late nights trying to stay awake, lit by the steady glow of the television keeping me warm (and safe) as if some sort of digital campfire. Even while the evening slipped into the dark recesses of night where monsters lurked, there was something comforting about that persistent glimmer; keeping the room safe with its revealing reach into even the darkest corners of the room that would normally be swallowed by the darkness. There was safety within the bounds of that flickering light, shielding me and keeping at bay all of the things that slither through the night.

But eventually Id drift off and I can remember being jarred awake when, at the end of the day, the programming would ultimately end with sudden and auditory cry that often roused me out of my sleep. There was something about that feeling, about waking up while the once ever-present television was essentially shrugging as if to say Ive got nothing left for you that filled me with a sense of unease. It was as if all of the grownups who run the world were asleep, and here I was  alone and in a place I shouldnt be at a time that I shouldnt see. Peering behind the curtain where there was nothing left but me and whatever else roams the night at this ungodly hour.

That sense of being adrift in the unknown of night felt ominous. It felt unknown and I felt like a lone explorer who only wished to return to the safety and the comfort of sleep that would take me anywhere but here. Id close my eyes and hope to find respite in the arms of a dream.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Cactoid Labs present Remembrance of Things Future Vol. 2: Monica Rizzolli: A Tour of Hypothetical Waterfalls, a generative code-based series created in dialogue with Katsushika Hokusai's iconic 19th c. woodblock prints, A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls in LACMA's collection. Remembrance of Things Future engages artists working on the blockchain to reimagine the museum's collection. Building on the museum's experimentations with art and tech, LACMA and Cactoid Labs invited pioneering digital artists to select objects from the museum's holdings and create new digital editions inspired by a diverse selection of artworks. Utilizing tools such as generative code, and dynamic software the artists created unique works that engage histories across various eras. Following the museum's tradition of collaborating with artists to create limited editions, a percentage of the proceeds from these new digital editions will support LACMA's Art + Tech Lab.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Cactoid Labs present Remembrance of Things Future, an initiative that engages artists working on the blockchain to reimagine the museum's encyclopedic collection. Building on the museum's ongoing experimentations with art and technology, LACMA and Cactoid Labs invited pioneering digital artists Monica Rizzolli, Ix Shells, Jen Stark, Emily Xie and Sarah Zucker to select objects from the museum's holdings and create new digital editions inspired by a diverse selection of artworks. Utilizing tools such as generative code, dynamic software and video synthesizers, the artists created unique works that engage histories across various eras. The digital editions will be released on the blockchain in phases beginning March 2023. Following the museum's long tradition of collaborating with artists to create limited editions, a percentage of the proceeds from these new digital editions will support LACMA's Art + Technology Lab.

A Tour of Hypothetical Waterfalls is part of Remembrance of Things Future, a LACMA and Cactoid Labs initiative that engages artists working on the blockchain to reimagine the museum's encyclopedic collection. Building on the museum's ongoing experimentations with art and technology, LACMA and Cactoid Labs invited pioneering digital artists to select objects from the museum's holdings and create new digital editions inspired by a diverse selection of artworks. 
I was inspired by the series A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls by Katsushika Hokusai in the collection of LACMA. To create my series I isolated Hokusai's primary compositional elements and sought to understand their interactions. Using JavaScript and p5.js, these elements became the basis for my work. I selected one of the outputs from my algorithm for my first edition with LACMA. That output represents one of the nearly infinite possible outcomes that my code is capable of generating.Monica Rizzolli

Building on the museum"s ongoing experimentations with art and technology, LACMA and Cactoid Labs invited pioneering digital artists to select objects from the museum"s holdings and create new digital editions inspired by a diverse selection of artworks. 
This work was inspired by the Bullseye quilt from 1896 by Martha Lou Jones in the LACMA Collection. I was fascinated by how the overriding rigid geometry of the piece was challenged by its hand-made, imperfect feel. I loved how the colors of the rings look randomized yet cohesive. This inherent tension in quilting between the human and the computational represents so much of what generative art is all about. -Emily Xie

I was inspired by an early photograph of a botanical image from 1851 in the collection of LACMA. In my own practice, I have a strong dialogue between nature and its juxtaposition to the inorganic digital realm where my creations live.  Within the structures that underpin my work Ahead of Time you will see the resonances of the botanical branch featured in the historic photograph. -Ix Shells

This piece is a reflection on the vibrational geometry found within the quilt, Log Cabin, Barnraising Variation, in the LACMA collection. I studied fibers in college and I have always loved the meditative quality of such a process-oriented medium having grown up around the hand-sewn quilts of my great-grandmother. I wanted to create a meditative piece that harnessed the trancelike experience of encountering these hypnotic patterns, extracting and enhancing the impact of color and line. -Jen Stark
