He was known to have extremely superior skills in warfare and close combat but he was killed by Lord RAMA in the epic battle of Ramayana.

In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Shantanu was the blind 
father of Shravan Kumar who was accidentally killed
by Dasarath (King of Ayodhya and father of Lord RAMA).

This incident started a chain of events that led to Rama and his brother along with his wife Sita
to be exiled for 14 years.
And during that period the epic battle with RAVANA took place.

SHANTANU

On the night of Krishnas birth, as soon as Krishna 
was born, a bright light filled the prison and Vasudeva 
was woken up by a divine voice that guided him to take Infant Krishna across the stormy Yamuna river to save the new borns life from KAMSA.
Later, Kamsa, the tyrant king was eventually beheaded by Krishna, as was originally predicted by the divine prophecy.

VASUDEVA carrying infant KRISHNA

KUMBHAKARNA is a powerful Rakshasa (demon) and younger brother of RAVANA from the Hindu epic Ramayana. He is said to have slaughtered 8000 Vanaras (the monkey army) over the course of RAMA"s invasion of Lanka.
He was a giant had a grand appetite and slept for months at a time. The demons had to wake him up by hitting him with weapons and blowing loud instruments and shouting in his ears.
