Fresh Air

"Fresh Air" is the freedom and relief that arises when you speak your needs. The same tears and unbearable sadness I was feeling the day I wrote this song led me back to myself, to my core needs. What makes me feel grounded and free. I spent the rest of the day at a festival on the lakefront.

 I"m a fire starter, phoenix, lioness, and alchemist with my head so focused on the victory that I"m learning to allow my heart the space it needs to just shed in the moment. Yes I am strong, but these days I have been leaning into my softness, my gentle era, and yearning for ease. 

When we keep telling ourselves the same stories about love, success, friendship, society, relationships, and one another we can create blockages that bind us to the same endings. I no longer believe that I am asking too much and I know that god, the universe, the earth has already provided so much. We have everything we need. I want everyone who listens to this song to feel like giving and receiving good love is possible. 

The heartbeat of the song is New Orleans Second Line drum meets afrobeat (produced by She is the Future collaborator and native son of New Orleans Infinite Eye) featuring the lyrical and vintage visual art stylings of Old Orleans. The soul of the song is nostalgic groove inspired and shaped by Head of Production and Engineering at Creative Minds Coalition, Ashton Woods. Detroit Soul Okkk Motown okkk not to mention the song feats. buttery backing vocals from the Cameroonian Detroit legend Scolla Fungwe as well as my three year old daughter Mecca Selah, no but fr, she was feeling it and it"s giving light at the end of the tunnel.

When I went full time music in 2016 it wasnt an easy feat.

Using my skillset to make money was like shooting in the dark abyss. Outside of my performances and few feature verses, I was a freelance videographer and I produced for a few artists. But those who know about freelance workits tough building a consistent pool of clients. Especially ones that are willing to pay.

In the meantime, I would do Lyft, Uber, Postmates -- whatever I could do to make ends meet. I spent late nights driving people to their destinations to make sure we had enough money for our phone bill. I spent rainy cold evenings delivering Postmates meals to get those last few dollars for groceries. And all while maintaining my music career. 

As you can imagineit was stressful. 

During this time of my life, I wasnt the warm-hearted pat junior many people know now. I was deeply hurt, ignorantly traumatized and a somewhat cold-hearted pat junior. I was the no new friends pat junior. Only open with those who had been with me from day one.

Although Im a huge fan of Marvel, there are a few DC characters I like. One of them is Batman. And during this time, I thought myself very akin to Batman. Mysterious, extremely cautious, unable to be read, high moral code, protective, still seen as a leader to many but not willing to trust other people or let them in.

Amid creating new music, I remember hearing this beat made by my mentor and producer DSTL (Daniel Steele) and immediately gravitating to it. I remember using every bit of determination and frustration in me to write this record. If its one thing life has done to me? Its made me develop me thick skin and a sharp mind. I was made to muscle through many extreme storms in life due to what I had been through and being a man of big faith. 

Thats the theme of this record. I poured all that mindset into every line when writing this  along with making a lot of cool Batman references and analogies.

I remember performing this record for the first time and it shaking the stage and blowing away the audience. 

I remember this song becoming the record that many rappers in the area did NOT want to perform after because when I finished performing it was a very tough act to follow  this said verbatim by artists of other genres in the area. Its like I took all the energy off the stage with me when I got done performing it.

But most of all, I remember this record being a beacon of energy for people and making them feel like they could muscle through any hardship and accomplish anything no matter what obstacle was in the way.

And now, Im sharing it on the blockchain.

Cool With You?

I remember having a conversation with a "music exec" in the past for some critiques and insight on my music.

I was told: "The music is great. You rap great, the production is great  and love music with this type of message. But the masses won"t tune in to this kind of music. The world is too dark its not you." When I asked what that meant, I was told in so many words I needed to have a rough childhood upbringing turned positive to make my message loved and respected by people. If not, then I needed a gimmick of some sort.

That convo put me into a small stint of depression and snatched the inspiration right out of me. I"m grateful for friends with wisdom that told me that person was very likely trying to make me their industry pawn but also made it clear to me that -- MY story? Was indeed needed in the world via my music.

Not too long after that, I was inspired to produce and write this song. It was a letter to my listeners asking them an important yet somewhat rhetorical question: 

this is my life and experience...is that cool with you?

I hope this record can be an encouragement to all artists of all genres and forms to always stay true to you. We should all strive to become great at what we do and explore new sounds and ways to create. But we should never lose who we are for the sake of money (USD or ETH) or just to attract a large audience. Because you can really die while you"re still alive.

What if you could meet your past or future self across space and time. What might you advise, observe, affirm, or say to yourself ?

One truth I would reveal to my past self is: 
you will use your voice and your journal entries will become poems, stories will become speeches, and songs will spring forth into the world to become your legacy. 

Infinite is a dance between my past, present, and future self. If we see more limitlessly we find that time is in fact not short, time is abundant as well, life is the longest dance we will ever know.   

The world is what it is, for better or worse because people shaped it so, that being said, I believe we are in an everlasting cycle of co-creation with the universe. Infinite asks us to get on the dancefloor ( a metaphor for life) and tap in with self and one another to create the world we want to live in and leave behind for future  generations. 

Art imitates life and life imitates art. Dreams are sacred and I believe we dont quit until weve lived each one. 

Produced by New Orleans royalty, Ciara Porter( granddaughter of George Porter Jr. , The Meters) , recorded at House of Corperning with her partner, Charles aka Winowilly ( from Philly) and mixed & mastered by Future Surf  Labs founder Cam Murdoch, the song is made up of bars, bounce, melodic house poly-rhythms, and soulful dance breaks. 

Everyday I reaffirm to present self that I am surrounded by supportive community, I can step out of my way and let the blessings flow into my life. 
Breathe now look up, look within, and look how far weve come. 

If I met my future self, I would encourage her to  continue to enjoy the fruits of her labor and to keep finding ways to honor all the people she has encountered along the way, they have  all mattered.

I am inspired daily and have so much love for so many of you in ways that dont even belong to me
