Different Way

Different Way is a brand new track that I recorded specifically for my first Sound.xyz release and was performed, arranged, and mixed by myself and mastered by Genzo Rubin. It will also, subsequently, be the first track that I upload to DSPs under the Weinbagz moniker. I started my journey as a full time producer and my journey into web3 at roughly the same time in early 2021. I remember back to when I was thinking seriously about what being a producer/songwriter would actually look like. While there was always the possibility of getting attention and eyes on my music, I did not see a path to being able to feed myself from my work. Enter web3. Over the past 2 years, Ive created more financial freedom for myself than I ever could have hoped for with going strictly the traditional route with music.

Ive also been trying to figure out how to start integrating a web2 presence alongside my presence in web3, because I do believe in my music and I know that distribution is very limited when looking at web3 and NFTs. So, when Im referring to a Different Way, or finding Our Own Way, this is the dynamic Im referencing. Im always looking for the intersection of music, tech, and audience. So merging my Sound genesis along with my Spotify genesis only made sense.

To further marry these two worlds, I will also be including the name of the Golden Egg winner in the track title when uploading to DSPs (unless they express not to be included). I figure its another way to take the fans on the journey with me and feature the true supporters.

Better Days (2000)

We"re rewinding the calendar back to 2000, a year before the 1st generation iPod was available! Better Days was originally released on 12" single 23 years ago on underground West London label People Records. I"d just released my debut international major label album and was experimenting with ways to fuse my love for jazz with my love for soulful dancefloor tunes. It"s been the theme of my whole career, sometimes leaning more to the jazz end, sometimes more to the beats end, but consistently searching for different ways to balance the two worlds. Now days, it"s not an unusual combination at all, but back then.. ? - sacrilege to some and the freshest vibes for others. 

At the time I had an MPC2000, Fender Rhodes and Roland JP8080 synth module. I made the framework for the track and went into studio in Auckland, NZ to add some friends to the track - scat vocal vibes by Thomas Stowers, then a very young up and coming R&B singer; bass courtesy Chip Matthews, who would go on to be the low end theorist for NZ Pacifican-Soul star Che Fu; trumpet laced by my mentor and elder, and to this day one of my favorite trumpet players on the planet, Kim Paterson (Kim and I played so much acoustic jazz together but always jumped at the chance to join me on anything with beats); and Nick Gaffaney adding some tasty jazz brushes on drum kit - Nick would go on to found Cairo Knife Fight, an astounding 2 man rock band. The lineup alone is a memorable cross section of NZ music talent at the turn of the century. 

Influenced by the sounds I was hearing spun in clubs - from Jazzanova and Compost Records to Phil Asher, Roy Davis Jr and others, along with my perennial love for jazz legends like Miles, Better Days captured a little bit of all these, melting them into a jazz-fueled slab of wax that I was immensely proud to have released on one of the most forward thinking labels anywhere at the time.

Here we are now, over 2 decades later, and Better Days is the final drop of our $BUYBACK Emerald series - celebrating the past, the journeys we make and the fun we have along the way. Bringing that pre-iPod music to a blockchain here n now n forever...

Better Days (2000) #2

37,000 Feet (MdCL's Sonkei remix)

this is a remix of one of the very first midnight snacks - i made the original early 2020, right when touring came to a standstill and i was missing that feeling of flying at cruise altitude across the planet to visit faraway places, and share music with friends old and new. my sonkei ("respect" in japanese) remix is inspired by, and in memory of, the late great nujabes - the legendary japanese producer who left us way too soon (if you"re not familiar, samurai champloo is a great entry point to his music via a classic anime). 

I"ve always loved how nujabes is the consummate improvising b-boy musician, flipping jazz, breaks and samples. i tweeted recently reflecting on how we were born the same year, have similar musical dna, were always barely even one degree of separation from each other, but despite all the time and community i"ve had in japan, never had the opportunity to meet. he"s someone i would love to have had a chance to break bread with, vibe and create with.

with all that in mind (!), fresh out the lab, here"s the new sonkei remix, slowing [37,000 feet] down to a jazzy head-nod and sending peace and love out to nujabes - RIP

Im here to introduce you to Overthinking - one of my most personal songs so far. It sums up a period in my life where perfectionism was king and I would spend days, weeks, months completely frozen. Overthinking is my farewell to unachievable standards and a welcome to peace.                                          

Ironically that song took me many versions and weeks to finish. :)

Joyful Resistance Part I

"Joy as an act of resistance" - quoted from poet Toi Dericotte, is an idea, a way of being, and turn of phrase that I was introduced to visiting Initiatives of Change in Richmond VA, January 2020 at the invitation of cultural storyteller and curator Alicia Aroche. Two months later the whole world shut down. Two months later, George Floyd"s murder inspired a long-overdue global action, thought and consciousness mobilization putting BLM front and center of the world stage.

Summer 2020, at the peak of the protests, I sat down to create with all this on my heart. Joy is an energy. It"s the antidote to so many negative and destructive emotions and ideas, instantly breaking down barriers and fortifying spirits and minds with an infectious, and freedom-focused, powerfully positive expression: the power of joy rooted in intention, and the force for change and evolution that it can be. 

Out came these sounds... brooding piano leading the way into a 3/4 head nod, with moogs dancing free form around the harmony-dense groove... anchored by shapes designed to inspire curiosity, possibility, nostalgia and newness all at once. Change starts in our minds and hearts and this is offered in gratitude to the power of music to reach inside us, uplift, inspire and unite.

Dance Music for Introverts Vol. 1 #49

I wrote Ego in a writing session with Dan Henig and Linden Jay who both worked with me on Cherry Wine.  I think this is their first times being involved in an NFT so I"m stoked that I can help bring some fellow creators into the web 3.0 space with me on this journey. 

I hope that I"m going to extend my collector-base with this release and welcome more NFT collectors into my community.  I"m about to be doing lots of touring all over the place and so I"m hoping that I"ll be able to connect with collectors in different cities around the world, that would be so cool.
