Leo Villareal presents his latest NFT collection, Cosmic Bloom, the second entry in the artists Cosmologies series, which began with Cosmic Reef, his successful NFT project for Art Blocks Curated.

Cosmic Bloom draws from the artists longstanding practice of applying coding to generate complex visual sequences in his light sculptures. He draws upon this practice in order to extend his artistic vision into the NFTs, sculpting pixels and binary code into purely digital works.

The works are produced using custom live code and inspired by organic and biological structures, stellar phenomena, and atomic patterns. Each digital artwork in this new collection is unique and features intricate geometric forms that are layered and multiplied, creating captivating patterns set in a non-repeating and constant motion.

The flower is a teacher of symmetry and geometry (the eternal verities, as Plato called them).  In this, flowers can be treated as sources of remembering  a way of recalling our own wholeness, as well as awakening our inner power of recognition and consciousness. What is evident in the geometry of the face of a flower can remind us of geometry that underlies all existence.   The Hidden Geometry of Flowers

_Cosmic Bloom_ is a new collection of NFTs by Leo Villareal and is the second part of the artists _Cosmologies_ series. The series began with [_Cosmic Reef_](https://opensea.io/collection/cosmic-reef-by-leo-villareal) which Villareal created in collaboration with Art Blocks Curated. The compositions of _Cosmic Bloom_ are entirely abstract, in constant motion, and are non-repeating. They are influenced by organic and biological structure as well as stellar phenomena.

_Cosmic Bloom_ is a generative art work. The code for _Cosmic Bloom_ is written in javascript using Three.js.  This code is uploaded to IPFS along with the JSON definitions for each mint. After much experimentation, specific sets of data and parameters are fed into the code in order to produce many outputs.  Villareal then hand selected the iterations to be part of the final edition. This extra step allows him greater control, ensuring that the entire collection faithfully reflects his artistic vision. All of the moving images are generated by the code and do not repeat; they are not recorded videos.

By placing our trust in any of the "future techs" to solve todays environmental problems, we run the risk of postponing the actions that mattered. As the first survey organized by an American museum of the leading artists engaged with blockchains, Peer to Peer is an online exhibition and fundraiser that stages an exchange between 13 artists and their historical peers in the Buffalo AKGs collection of modern and contemporary art. It presents works produced with a variety of technologies, from Artificial Intelligence to 3D modeling, and ranging in format from videos and GIFs to PDFs, websites, software applications, and smart contracts. While technologically experimental, the works also speak toand transformthemes explored by artists over the last two centuries. The exhibition therefore celebrates both the continued relevance of the historical peers and the contributions of the new peers to arts expanding network of ideas.  Tina Rivers Ryan

Winslow Homers Croquet Challenge is a digital game that can be played by anyone on the internet or by collectors as an application on their computer. Toronto-based artist Mitchell F. Chan not only coded the game art and mechanics, but also wrote the dialogue, recorded the sound effects, and even created the shaders that calculate the lighting levels on each texture in real time. The first in his new series of immersive fictions called Beggars Belief, this game transforms Homers painting <a href="https://buffaloakg.org/artworks/194111-croquet-players" target="_blank" class="link">The Croquet Players, 1865</a>, into a digital physics game (like Angry Birds), in which the player uses their cursor to aim and swing their mallet towards the ball. The characters are modeled after the figures in the painting; the action takes place on a lawn that is bounded by a recreation of the paintings gilded frame; and landscape scenery from Homers other paintings provide the backdrop.

Homer first became famous for his images of the Civil War, which were popularized in the press and helped the Unions cause. Painted shortly after the wars ending, his idyllic rendering of a friendly croquet competition may represent the desire for reconciliation after an intense period of social and political divisionor perhaps a skepticism that such a thing is possible, given the ambiguous relationships between the figures. Chan amplifies the paintings undercurrent of conflict by giving the characters dialogue that emphasizes the historical context of the Civil War, as well as by making Homers genre painting of privileged leisure into an actual game with winners and losers. Given that physics games are descended from ballistics research during World War II (which contributed to the invention of modern computing), the game play particularly highlights the military history haunting this scene.

Beyond contextualizing The Croquet Players as an antebellum painting, Chans game reminds us that artlike games or politics or wartakes place within a defined arena according to a set of rules, and that certain ideas, facts, or people must be included or excluded for this arena to be maintained. Using your cursor to lower the in-game camera reveals a chain gang of formerly enslaved African Americans laboring in the fields beyond the lawn, suggesting the Jim Crow laws then forming on the horizonas if the tenor of Homers painting depends on keeping knowledge of these events outside the frame. The game also touches on the sexual politics of this era, which saw the birth of the womens suffrage movement. Homers painting reflects that croquet was one of the first co-ed sports, which contributed to its surge in popularity in the 1850s. Chans game uses Homers same co-ed figures, but we can only play as the women, even though only the men are allowed to speakand to win.

Winslow Homers Croquet Challenge #444

Casey Reas has been making abstract artworks with code for over twenty years. Crucially, he prefers that viewers experience his dynamic images as live performances, instead of screen recordingsthat is, the work always should be generated in real time by a computer executing his instructions. (This is somewhat analogous to the difference between listening to a symphony live in a concert hall and as a recording.) In this way, he invites us to appreciate not only the outputs of his codewhich are visually related to modernist artbut also the material and conceptual foundation of his work in the language of computation, which is his chosen instrument. 

In recent years, Reas has used the popular software language Processing, which he coauthored in 2001, to produce a series of works that pay explicit homage to the icons of twentieth-century abstraction. As he notes, the forms of these works refer to movements ranging from concrete and non-objective art to color-field painting and minimalism. In METASOTO, Reas offers a meta reflection on the work of Jess Rafael Soto, a Venezuelan Op and kinetic artist of the 1960s who explored the aesthetic possibilities of industrial and synthetic materials such as nylon, steel, and Plexiglas. Sotos sculptural construction <a href="https://buffaloakg.org/artworks/k19652-bois-tiges-de-fer" target="_blank" class="link">Bois-tiges de fer, 1964</a>, is a Masonite board measuring over five feet wide and painted with vertical black lines, in front of which are hung thin steel wires bent into varying arcs. As the viewer passes in front of the work, the visual interference between the actual and painted lines creates a dizzying optical confusion. In the 1960s, this kind of activation of the viewers body using nontraditional materials was understood by some as a political act, insofar as it rejected the bourgeois model of art as expensive objects to be passively consumed. 

In METASOTO, Reas uses live code that we experience via our browsers to reimagine Sotos sculpture as a dynamic composition of black and white intersecting lines. The black lines remain static, while the white lines move over them in ways that can make the black lines appear to be animated. Clicking on the image reveals a new pattern (although reloading the work will begin the same cycle over again), and each edition of the work presents an entirely different set of configurations. While Reass work reiterates Sotos embrace of technology to activate the viewer, it also invites us to consider what it means for the viewer to activate technologyor even create their own digital systems.

Friendship Bracelets by Alexis Andr

Since founding Art Blocks in 2020, artist Erick Calderon (a.k.a. Snowfro) has been intrigued by the idea of representing digital artwork in the physical world in the form of an ephemeral physical object with meaning, but with no inherent value. 

Donald Judd has long been an inspiration for Art Blocks. One aspect we admire most about Judds artistic practice is the elegance of design he effortlessly paired with the accessibility of materials that could be found at a hardware store. With Judd as inspiration, we hatched a plan to create a unique generative art friendship bracelet that includes instructions to make, in minutes, a simple bracelet using a few dollars worth of embroidery floss. Donald Judd believed that what surrounds us in our day-to-day life is already so beautiful, and that ultimately the experience of creating art is as important as owning it.

Erick was incredibly excited to collaborate with renowned artist Alexis Andr (a.k.a. MacTuitui) to bring generative art and ephemeral physical objects together in the form of friendship bracelets. Conceptualized by Erick and aesthetically and programmatically designed by Alexis, this project pairs creative coding with a beautiful spectrum of embroidery floss colors. The project was a true team effort, as each member of the Art Blocks team designed and named their own color palette!

The project is a token of our appreciation to the creators, makers, builders, and collectors who have all contributed to making the Art Blocks community what it is today. Participating in this project is a signal, both online and IRL, that youre a participant in this evolution of art + community. You are pushing the best ideas forward. You are the reason all of these imaginative projects come to life. Our community is what makes all of this possible.
