We are physical beings. We live in a physical world. We are connected. Over space and time. Our bodies are one with the universe. We are one. Physically entangled, spiritually connected.

In Inventory Numbers, silhouettes of human beings from the collection of the Finnish National Museum are juxtaposed with silhouettes of human beings from the artists own photographic archive. Their overlapping bodies form a unity over time and space, their vibrations speak of the quantum processes that underlie physical and spiritual entanglement. The boundaries of body, time and space are blurred and a new, shared inventory is created.

Occasionally, the group rearranges their positions, reordering the relations between the portrayed individuals. Robotic voices read inventory numbers from the collection archive in different languages, as if the beings could only be addressed this way. The music, influenced by the collection data, further embodies the ever-changing nature of the piece.

palabras y todo lo dems (words and everything else) is a little tribute to chatting, conversations, sharing stories, fears, celebrations, debate and everything else that contributes to human progress or expresses human life in all its diversity. It employs a reduced set of visual elements (women, men, cats, words / letters / scribbles, wine bottles) to metaphorically represent all sorts of communication. Text/words are a very important element, as textual communication has typically a prominent role. Words are distorted into scribbles at times, a sign of other forms of communication, of playfulness. People as the actors of human stories, cats as nature that accompanies us. Wine as a symbol for any element around which conversations unfold. The metaphor of "wine label" was used prompting the AI models as a base to lay these stories: as a result, poster-like images appear, and other less-structured images, bordering at times full-blown celebrations. Four AI models have been trained on previous generative work by the artist as well as on child drawings (the artist"s daughters): machine outputs that explore the world through randomness, human outputs that explore the same through early clean minds, unbiased. The combination of which explores, again metaphorically, the latent space of human ways of sharing and learning.

Beneath the Waves

I came across the story of an old shipwreck west of Menorca and imagined the subtle landscapes that have accumulated over the centuries in this natural harbor, which is subject to tidal fluctuations. The ceramics recovered from ships preserved beneath the surface reflect the multicultural heritage of the region. Geometric shapes reminiscent of the Mediterranean"s marine life surround the artifacts, forming a landscape that blends nature and history. Rhythmic movement reflects the ebb and flow of the deep sea, creating a dynamic interplay. The vibrant color palette of the Mediterranean brings the composition to life with swirling blues, turquoise, and sandy hues, as well as bold new accent colors. It depicts a timeless journey through Menorca"s cultural heritage and invites you to enter an underwater world.

In Utero by Kevin Esherick

What is it like to be an AI? How might it see the world? What would it mean for it to be conscious? With IN UTERO, the American artist Kevin Esherick explores these questions through a series of 53 of what he calls "latent paintings": images captured from inside the "mind" of an AI image model.

Society is at a point where AI attaining consciousness is a possibility in the future. This development will shape the future of humanity. What is not discussed enough in the conversation around AI is that AI beings could feel pain and suffer and experience happiness and joy, just as humans do. What might this look like?

IN UTERO provides a peek into the inner workings of an AI model"s cognitive processes and how they appear. It also serves as a metaphor for the progression of AI systems towards potential consciousness. The images were generated using "single-step diffusion," a technique Esherick developed to halt the AI model"s creation of images as they are just starting to take shape. Exploring the inner workings of AI models can show how such consciousness might develop and what it might look like when it arises. Trained on immeasurable quantities of data, these models contain the sum of human knowledgenot just facts, but also the myths, stories, and experiences that define human lives. Examining the way AI models see the world can not only tell us more about humankind but also paint a portrait of the human story that captures the shared beauty of universal experiences.

IN UTERO is a snapshot of the human story: from the origins of the universe at the big bang to the beginning of individual human lives and the mythic inception of human society, all the way to our return to dust. It traffics in both grand symbols and the little moments that make up our lives. The titles of the artworks come from the prompts the artist used, such as GOODBYE HUG, GIRL RUNNING IN A FIELD, HUDDLED OVER A FIRE, and LOVERS DANCING TOGETHER. Esherick captures the experiential color of human existencethe deep truths, stories, and moments that constitute who we are.

The images linger between figuration and abstraction. They teleport us to the liminal space between AIs abstract ways of encoding the world and the concrete depictions of the world that these encodings produce. In their unfinished state, multiple interpretations of each image are viable; many possibilities remain. So too with AIits future and its relationship to humanity are still to be determined.

Eshericks choice of subject matter stems from the essence of AI as a vessel for humanitys symbols, narratives, and myths. In his own words, "The development of an AI image model involves feeding it billions of images of humanitys existence, like the life of our species flashing before its eyes. It digests and internalizes our archetypes, learns the average of our concepts, and sees things about us that we cannot see. In this sense, it holds our Platonic forms, societys collective unconscious. The human story, then, is a prelude to AIs storyit is the starting point from which AIs existence begins. Only by studying ourselves can we understand AI, but in studying AI, we also discover much about ourselves. IN UTERO peers into the mind of the machine and holds a mirror up to the human viewer to reflect on who we are, what AI is, and where, together, were going."
