HYDRA by ALYSS

The HYDR NFT collection has been swirling around 2023 in a multiverse of awakenings, synchronicities and strange cosmic events. The last 7 years have felt like a hazy dream of both dark unending fog and unimaginable iridescent light; the dual forces of which collided together as the original HYDR track and its different variations came to be. 

The main, acoustic and ambient versions were self-produced and I had the pleasure of collaborating with UK producer simmerdown on the remix, who transformed the original in to a deeply hypnotic and shamanic electronic journey from start to finish. 

Bringing the project to life, the visuals and artwork were crafted by music / visual 3D artist 1011 Theory who went above and beyond to construct the HYDR being piece by piece in a way that exceeded all visions.

An evening newscast delivers a barrage of disturbing images and sound bites designed to fill our brains with the latest marketing messages and government propaganda. In todays top story, a decorated military veteran, Marshall Law, announces his intent to run for president on a law-and-order platform. The newscast cuts to a live political rally in which Law makes his case to voters, then cuts back to the newsroom for the wrap-up.

A jackbooted police force dressed in full riot gear breaks up the mayhem at the nightclub, in a Nine Inch Nails-inspired industrial romp that explores police brutality and authoritarian overreach. Marshall Law beams in over the TV screen (in homage to 1984 the film)-- forceful, triumphant and giddy with power.

Lost

its crazy to think about how Roy and i had never collaborated on an artistic level until now, and all of the synergies that led us here. it felt like we were always just an arms length apart, operating in the same circles, innovating in similar ways, both navigating the same spaces. after a few oddly serendipitous coincidences exchanged between us, it seemed like the universe was leaving signs everywhere that we should know each other, and beyond that, create together.

ive been a big fan of all of Roys creative endeavors for a while, and being in the studio with him was kinda magical. we wrote Lost the first time we sat down in a studio together, after talking for hours about the ebbs and flows of the music industry, and even more so, the ebbs and flows of simply just existing. we shared in a lot of the same pain, question marks, internal battles around decision making, relationships, and feeling like sometimes even when you thought you put the whole puzzle together, when you take a step back, a few pieces might still be lost somewhere in the ether. 

Lost is the first of what i hope to be many collaborations with Jagwar Twin, as two artists aiming to push the boundaries of what it means to exist at the intersection of digital and physical, tradition and innovation, storytelling and experimentation. but most importantly, as two people taking leaps of faith in the world with no set expectations.

Jagwar Twin: Much of the world feels lost right now. The shifting human landscape can be difficult to navigate as we are bombarded with external influences. All these external influences are pointing each of us to something in ourselves that we seem to have lost or forgotten. Annika and I are both navigating this new digital landscape and so it's no surprise that this song was birthed from it. I think in many ways we are all coming to grips with the reality that what seems black or white is usually neither, and simultaneously, both.

Sick Of Me

I almost died from longcovid - combined with a dangerous black mold exposure, other viruses, and parasites I didnt know I was harboring (including toxoplasmosis that went to my brain - which will make people suicidal on its own) in 2022. A perfect storm. 

It was a long, slow, painful, death that suffocated the old me. Id seen 11 Vanderbilt doctors who couldnt help me. I spent all of the money I intended for an album on medical bills. I had a large bathroom drawer full of prescriptions. I became an angry, hate-filled skeleton that even began repelling the love of my lives (my husband Grant), whod already suffered through other health scares with me. 

Somewhere in those 10 months of constant suffocation, allergic responses, bone-scraping fatigue, and mental warfare - my old self died. It is with this song (and this entire upcoming EP) that I send her off with a warriors funeral. And not just me, but the millions of people fighting chronic illness who have had to grieve parts of themselves in the same, horrific way. To represent this, the song ends with a choir of sick people singing together - all grieving our own lives. I present to you: Sick Of Me.

On a sunny day in the park, Maggie and her church group evangelize the Good Word of the Gospel and warn of the coming end times. This song captures the playbook driving modern evangelical Christianity, typified by a focus on the end of the world, the need to accept Jesus or else risk the eternal fires of damnation, and the directive to tell as many others as possible.
