Grateful

"Grateful" is about how to ease the blush of unfamiliarity when entering a new relationship. I wrote it when I made friends with the feeling of having just enough fuel to jump AND just enough fear to shut my eyes when I do it. This song is quite a bit more specific than my previous releases. As Stuck talked about trusting the feeling over the circumstance, and Paint in the Dark described the over-arching agreements that I have observed in the healthiest love, Grateful exemplifies these themes using the intimacy of a pillow talk conversation. It is about putting what Ive learned into action and trusting what happens next. 

As someone who has spent most of their music career playing shows and performing, Grateful has become one of the songs that I use to bring down the energy of a show. Its the deep breath out, the song that takes the emotional weight off, the settling. Some songs pop out finished within 30 minutes and others take time, and Grateful went through many iterations over a few years before I finally landed where I did. I spent a lot of time observing peoples reactions to the lyrics and would continue to edit until I got the reaction that I wanted from my audience. Up until early-2020 the song was called Quiet and the chorus was not very strong. I remember finally landing on the melody of the chorus that you hear now when I was just noodling around on a guitar at a friends house. Ill never forget the midnight, one-man, dance party I had in my bedroom because I finally discovered lyrics that mirrored the emotion of the melody of the chorus. Pure celebration, it was a glorious feeling. 

So, when you listen to this song, I want you to flip through you own wonderful, wine-stained memories just like I did. I hope it inspires you to take a conscious breath before you sit down for an intimate moment with that person, and recognize that this will only happen this way once, right now. it was a Friday night and i was making my way through Ireland when i got invited on a trip to sail across Croatia. i invited a few friends, and one of them wanted to come out a few days early so we could fuck around before the trip. she booked a flight to Paris for the coming Monday and i went to bed thinking of how i was going to organize the two days in between then and now. but when i woke up, she"d cancelled her flight because of work, and wouldn"t be coming to Croatia either.

this song was made on a sailboat in the Mediterranean Sea.

RIP You and Me was one of the first songs I wrote for my debut album Aftershock. Ironically, it ultimately became the clear and obvious choice to be the final song on the album (more on this later). I hadnt really written any songs since my previous EP Oh No, Not Again! and didnt know exactly where I wanted to go with the next round of music which I think is both the scariest and most freeing time for a songwriter. I booked a spontaneous trip to Miami to get inspired and thats where this song started.

While I was in Miami, I realized that although a relationship of mine had ended, there was still a lot I wanted to say to her and things I hoped she knew. I began to think of this song as a kind of eulogy for a relationship and thats where the title was born. After I had the working concept and some of the lyrics I sat down at the piano and that chorus melody line was one of the first things that came out. It was really funny working on this sad piano song while all of the other studios were bumping insanely loud reggaeton. I actually think this weirdly ended up inspiring the bridge, in that I knew the song had to dial up to 10 at some point to really capture the emotion.

When I got back to LA, I lived with the song for a little bit and really loved it, but it felt like something was missing to really put it over the top. It felt like one of the most harmonically sophisticated songs I had ever made and I really wanted to lean into that. I called Charlie Puth and had him not only replay all of the piano I had played but also add that outro solo which I could not be happier to have as the last moment on the album. 

This song had to be the final song on the album because to me this song is closure personified. Its looking back at all the highs and all the lows, exhaling, and saying we gave it our best shot. I think of the duality of the really intense bridge and the outro piano solo as kind of the perfect encapsulation of that feeling. I think this song defines the Aftershock era and Im so grateful for it.

i started this song in the fall of 2021 after a fight with a family member. i felt so misunderstood and frustrated by how childish and inconsequential the fight was - on my way home i wrote the first lyric you said some things you never meant that you thought you did. as time passed, the fight that started with my family member shifted to one between me and myself. i was so disappointed at how much energy i let the entire situation take from me - the song became as much about a fight with myself as it is about a fight with someone else.  

in that moment i was certain that my relationships with my family member & myself would forever be deeply altered. but nothing actually changed - my wounds were just paper cuts. i wrote the lyric you dont hurt like you think you do, like a bug but i just scratch right through - and the rest of the song fell into place. i realized i wasnt writing about being angry or disappointed - i was writing about the power and amusement of realizing your own strength.

i produced the bones of the song as i wrote it. as the emotion of the song changed, i tried to make the songs darker, grittier elements to work in a light, playful way - the muted guitars and distorted bass line still drive the song, but the chord changes feel less serious. i sent the entire project over to my friend struan finlay in new zealand to fill out the rest of the production.

Heart attack came about from three separate events that all had the same effect on me more or less. Id really hurt the girl I was seeing in the months she was away, and I went to her house to talk through everything. I realized pretty quickly it wasnt going to be a favorable discussion though, shed made up her mind and I wasnt in any place to try to convince her otherwise, so I left with my eyes full of water and cried in the car for the better part of an hour. Weeks went by without seeing her, but then I eventually did at a friends birthday and it was like getting sledge hammered in the chest. Id started seeing someone else around that time, which in hindsight was really irresponsible because my heart wasnt nearly settled, so it just led to a lot more stupid sadness for everyone involved.  Really all this music from the first half of Cherry is just the product of me being an idiot boy that couldnt see beyond his own nose too well. Like this song is so sad but you cant really pity someone that orchestrated their own pain. But dont worry, the room gets brighter the further you walk into it and we have a lot of room left.

This is the version of Heart Attack I was originally going to go with before I sat with it for a few weeks and completely reproduced it from the ground up. It didnt feel right to not have this version exist somewhere so Im glad youll have it here. All holders of this drop will be airdropped an edition of the final version when its released on my site later this year.

i listened to Graceland every night that summer. i had just turned 16 and could drive on my own for the first time. there was a short backroad near her house where you could drive triple the speed limit without anyone noticing. i picked her up every night after work and we laid on the runway of the abandoned airport at the edge of my town. it was the kind of summer i knew in the moment would stay with me for a long time - i dont think you can ever forget the feeling of falling in love for the first time. 

i"ve been trying to write this song ever since. something that captures the invincibility and innocence of falling for someone - and that naive confidence that no one could ever know them as well as you. last month i drove by the now abandoned runway - i felt all of the anxiety and arrogance from when i was 16 again. i pulled over and wrote the first verse:

Bored Brothers

We are the Bored Brothers. A fully animated NFT-based recording artist project developed and executive produced by Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) and KYGO. As avid NFT / Web3 enthusiasts, we conceived the idea of auditioning some of our Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) apes to form an animated, multi-genre duo based primarily in dance and hip-hop. This project stems from an overwhelming desire to curate and create music outside our respective genres. Were flirting with everything from deep house to Miami bass and deeper dance genres like Phonk.

The Bored Brothers are musically unlike any other DJ/artist project. With the actual Bored Ape NFTs themselves as the artists -  the world we live in is unlimited, both visually and dimensionally. We live and work in the real world and in real venues as easily as the metaverse itself. There will be collaborations, there will be experimentations, and there are no rules. We care about having a good time, always bringing the party, and seeing the world while in the process. 

Our lead single, DRIP, helps set the wave but is just one piece of the Bored Brothers puzzle. All shall soon be revealed.
