My trip to the Bay Area in 2019 had a special reason: my then 4-month-old nephew. I spent most of my day with him, and in the evenings I would go to SF. I had seen the Golden Gate Bridge a lot of times in the past, but to truly appreciate the scale of this magnificent structure, Fort Point is the place to be. So I decided to go there during the last week of my trip.

As I stood there in complete awe of the bridge, the golden light illuminating its towering frame, watching the waves crash at its feet, its massive scale reminded me of the grandeur of life itself.It was then that I realised that I would probably meet my nephew about 30 more times in my lifetime, and it was even scarier to realise that my parents would get fewer chances. I wondered how many more family dinners we would have all together and if I would ever be chilling with my grad school friends in our usual hangout spots. It hit me like a truck, broke me, and made me appreciate what my parents had gone through - what every parent goes through when their child moves away.

After that realisation, I made a conscious effort to overcome my introversion and prioritise spending time with the people I love. Rather than bailing out of such opportunities, I would make an effort to be more present. I also feel grateful for this shift in perspective because it prepared me for the challenges during the pandemic, which made it difficult to see friends and family for extended periods of time.

Life can seem formidable and everlasting, but the depressing math of it is that time is fleeting and really fast at that.

This photo captures such enormity of life in the transience of time, reminding us to cherish the handful of moments we have with our loved ones and make the most of it.

The Scale of Life

A firestone is known for its ability to withstand high temperatures and intense heat, qualities that I found myself longing for during a difficult time in my life back in 2017. 

As I stood in narrow corridors, looking up from the bottom of Antelope Canyon, the rich orange hue of the Navajo Sandstone reminded me of a firestone and gave me hope. For a week, I had felt betrayed and alone, screaming for help on the inside without reaching out to anyone. Over the next few months, I drew on the resilience of the firestone as a source of inspiration and motivation. 

Slowly, I began to rise on my own, pulling myself from the underground instead of waiting for a hand to bring me up, grounding myself in the present and finding the strength to face the future.

I took this photograph on my 31st birthday at a place Ive wanted to visit for years. Until that day, I thought my peak years to travel the world were long gone because that"s what everyone tells you. After being stuck at home for 16 months during a global pandemic, taking in this view made me realise that this was just the beginning of the new life I wanted to build for myself.

Im only getting started on the places I want to see, the things I want to do and the people I want to meet.

"Far from Home" portrays my personal odyssey, capturing experiences of my move from India to Canada. The day I took this photo, I remember walking alone for a bit, a little behind from where my friends were because I was trying to capture this majestic view at twilight. 

Feeling adrift, far away from the familiarity of home. The blurred lights symbolize the disorientation and uncertainty in the path. But the serene blue hour and stillness of the mountain represent my journey of always chasing calmness in the chaos.

As I got out of the car on the side of the freeway and started walking towards the beach, I was overwhelmed with a sense of familiarity; the cold fresh air, the sun in my eyes, and the sound of the waves. Memories of the time I spent in Los Angeles, California as a grad student and a few summers in Bay Area after graduation came rushing back, and I realized that a lot has changed since then. One thing that won"t change, however, is me coming back to you.

Across the Blue Lake

This photo is of the last sunset of 2021. Everyone stepped into 2021 knowing we now live in a changed world and made way for self realisation for a lot of people. It took a lot of learning to be kind to myself and remember that the people closest to me see me with my scars and tired eyes and choose to love me regardless. Ill always be carrying a hope in my heart that things will get better and I will love me for me so I can believe that the people around me do too.
