BuildABetterFuture

Destiny Kirumira. Human was inspired by Simone Biles decision to withdraw from the team gymnastics competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In an interview with her mother, she commented that although she expected backlash after choosing to take a step back, she marked it was the first time she felt human. 

While Biles is a 7-time Olympic medal-winning athlete, at the start and end of each day she is first and foremost a human. As a Black woman, there are many injustices I either feel the need to or am expected to fight against. The moments I feel exhausted, or too tired to fight are often the moments I feel the weakest. However, I am reminded by Simones actions and through the actions of many other Black women, that my worth is not tied to my accomplishments or what people expect of me. My worth is inherently rooted in my humanity, which can never be severed from my soul.

I chose to paint Simone in a way that wasnt hyper-focused on all her accomplishments or her reputation as an Olympic gymnast. In doing so, I hope to celebrate and emphasize how valuable her rest is. 

Building a better future means creating a future where Black women dont have to defend their humanity, but instead are celebrated for cherishing it.

John Knopf. Ive always found that art is a manifestation of an artists intention.
Just like making art or taking the perfect photograph, building the future is a
creative act.
What makes great art? Love, authenticity, and focus. If you want to make your art
better, you put all your heart and focus into it.
So, if we all want to live in a future better than our past, we need to show up with all
our hearts and create that. We need to take love, authenticity, and focus and then
elevate them as more valuable than competition and greed.
Our intention matters when we make art, just as it matters when we build the
companies and the systems that govern them. The future will be better beyond our
wildest dreams if we all set our intentions, focus, and build with love.

Allison Dayka. Through the use of art and common imagery this piece is created to evoke thoughts on our current path as a civilization; are we leading ourselves to the point of no return? It is the common belief that we are the rudders within our journey, therefore remain thoughtful for which direction you steer. This piece attempts to bring to the forefront some of the various potentially destructive things we come across each day, whether physically, emotionally, socially, psychologically; or all of the above. Regardless one should be mindful of the impacts that are caused short term and long term to you individually, to the current environment and most of all the future state.
