Art Blocks x Pace

Robert Whitmans genesis NFT project, New Worlds, transports viewers to otherworldly, cosmic landscapes beyond the Earth. Each of the 500 generative, interactive, and unique New Worlds NFTs centers on an imagined celestial body in space. The planetsand, in some cases, black holesfeature distinctive colors, patterns, shadows, and topographies on their surfaces, and they are situated in vast skies rendered in varying hues, opacities, and gradients. Some planets in the series are surrounded by rings, and they may have up to three moons in their orbits. Viewers can navigate around the planets and explore their sublime environments by zooming in and out and dragging their cursors on the screen. New Worlds will be presented in Whitmans upcoming solo show with Pace Gallery, on view at 508 West 25th Street in New York from January 18 to February 3.
 
The New Worlds NFTs are based on Whitmans mesmeric projections of planets and moons, which he presented in his solo exhibition Turning at Pace in New York in 2007, as well as new images from the James Webb Space Telescope, which sent its first pictures back to Earth in 2022. A pioneer of performance and multimedia installation art, Whitman has been producing exploratory and collaborative work for more than 60 years. He was at the vanguard of scientifically and technologically engaged art making during this period, co-founding the Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), a collective that supported creative partnerships between artists and engineers, in 1967. Whitman was also major figure in the ephemeral Happeningsa hybrid art form spanning installation, performance, and other mediumspresented in New York in the late 1950s and early 1960s by a group of artists that also included Claes Oldenburg, Allan Kaprow, Jim Dine, and Red Grooms.

Whitmans web3 debut reflects the limber and timeless nature of his influential and rigorous practice, which left an indelible mark on 20th century art history. As part of the artists forthcoming exhibition at Pace in New York, Pace Live, the gallerys interdisciplinary platform for commissioning and presenting new live art performances, will stage live renditions of his seminal 1960 performance work American Moon. Whitmans first NFT project can be understood in conversation with this disorienting, madcap performance, which premiered nearly a decade before the first moon landing. New Worlds, Whitmans most technologically ambitious artwork to date, forges new through lines across the artists storied and experimental career, traversing his digital and physical investigations of universes beyond our own.

*923 Empty Rooms* is an artwork about simulation and the history of visual representation and abstraction. Each room is a space to explore.

Each of the 923 unique rooms contains a simulated still life, an arrangement of forms. There are six primary forms, each linked to a city: Sun (Tokyo), Shard (Berlin), Cargo (London), Hive (New York), Pyramid (CDMX), and Moon (Los Angeles). A series of rooms will be minted over the course of a simultaneous, six-day exhibition at galleries in each city.

There are 923 rooms in total to iterate through every possible combination of the six shapes:

It represents nostalgia from an era when the Internet was a mystical new space, where computer graphic cards had more limitations than what we know nowadays, where graphical user interfaces were beginning to shape as a result of a steep learning curve for command-line interfaces, and where artists started to test unfamiliar methods to make art.

Its a juxtaposition of chaos and order. A disarray of colored geometric shapes, wrapped by orderly patterns, trying to find their place in a screenshot. Patterns depicting an intended path or miscalculation in a new domain. Infinite combination of rules within certain parameters creating distinct yet related architectural collages. A real-time static visual memory of what Web3 was in the now.

DRIFT artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nautaknown for their explorations of natural phenomena through technologically minded artworksand artist Jeff Davis, known for his explorations of color and form through algorithmic systems, have joined forces to produce a new generative art project titled Schema. Taking DRIFTs widely exhibited Meadow installation as a point of departure, Schema comprises 300 unique, generative, and animated artworks uniting DRIFT and Daviss artistic visions. 

This collaborative new project is inspired by the beauty and simplicity of DRIFTs two-dimensional schematic designs for Meadow, an upside-down landscape in which illuminated mechanical flowers open and close as part of a poetic choreography. Hung from a ceiling, this mesmeric work examines the impermanence of the changing seasons and the phenomenology of nature.

At its core, Schema is a love letter to the preliminary work that goes into realizing any large-scale art installationin this case, diagram-making. Together, Gordijn, Nauta, and Davis developed a custom algorithm that brings the physical sculptures details and idiosyncrasies to life, recasting its diagrammatic origins in four possible styles: Diagram, the style that most closely resembles DRIFTs preliminary diagrams for Meadow; Color Study, which strips out the structural elements of the diagrams and express the flowers as abstract rings of color; Sketch, which renders the flowers as line drawings with chalk-like accents; and Blueprint, which resembles the style of a blueprint.

In addition to these four different drawing styles, the projects algorithmic system chooses two parent colors for each artwork, which may result in a wide spectrum of colors appearing across the composition from left to right or, alternatively, a more monochromatic scheme. The flowers themselves also have their own color systems that determine the relationship between their physical color and the color of their internal lights, creating gradient effects as the cast light blends with the local color. 

Variable traits in any given Schema artwork also include: the total number and location of the flowers; day and night modes that impact ambient light effects; each flowers apparent position relative to the viewer; and the frequency and speed at which each flower opens and closes. Flowers in these artworks also run on their own cycles, deliberately avoiding synchronization and giving the whole scene a sense of organic motion. Once the viewer clicks on a static Schema composition to activate its motion, the animations in the artwork evolve endlessly.

Symbol 1 by Emily Weil

In this collection, each mark on the digital canvas is made by text of the algorithm that created it. When viewing Symbol 1, youre viewing its code  logic becoming art.

If you look closely at an oil painting you may see brushstrokes. If you look closely at an iteration of Symbol 1, you"ll see snippets of the code that generates the piece itself: text from for() loops repeated over and over; the Random() function itself weaving through the piece; and the hash code, like an artist signature, displayed on the bottom right.

Organic and mechanical forces have long been in tension in art and architecture. Art nouveau"s floral  curves vs. art deco"s industrial geometry, Jackson Pollock"s declaration I am nature vs. Andy Warhol"s confession I want to be a machine, etc.

This conversation continues in generative art. One collection might appear surprisingly organic, as if crafted by hand; another might appear strictly computer generated, showing the expressive power of machines.

Symbol 1 joins this conversation, offering another way to synthesize the natural and the mechanical. Just as a crashing ocean wave could be explained mathematically by the forces that generated it, an image in Symbol 1 appears almost chaotic while revealing the logic that created it.

About the title: Symbol 1 is a term from First Principles, a chapter in The Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847) by George Boole, a founder of modern logic. For Boole, symbol 1 represents the Universe comprehending every conceivable class of objects, whether actually existing or not.
