Loop Jam 0 (#PhaseDance)

So, while I make a lot (A LOT) of beats, original compositions, remixes, reworks, and the like, my favorite creations are the ones where I flex my musicality in a more traditional format. These "Loop Jams" and "Jam Sessions" I have originally were ultra-personal for me, virtually for my ears only. Of the 10-12 I may have liberated so far, there exist over 100 variations, both unfinished or roughly arranged into otherwise finished tracks, with me usually setting the musical landscape for me to play my own solos, arrange crazy bridges and vamps, and assemble layers upon layers upon layers of interconnected sounds and phrases, just because I can.

Firstly, what"s special about the cover is that it is my genesis DALL-E creation, in which I describe for it, "A translucent, glowing man playing a grand piano, floating through space with an Old Fashioned cocktail and a joint floating behind him, and the Milky Way in the background". I think DALL-E nailed it, don"t you?

This track is special, however, because I sample a similar arrangement from one of my late father and I"s favorite musicians, Pat Metheny, for what is easily one of my favorite arrangements of all time, "Phase Dance". I hope with every track like this that I do, I am honoring both him and our favorite artist, and that the energy you feel when you listen to this inspires the same kind of feeling I get when I listen to his records: hope, for the future, for all of eternity...

matt (hastings) is such a talented young artist who we"ve become close friends with. this song was written in a session we did together in nashville with seth ennis earlier this year, and it"s the only song on the EP that we co-wrote from scratch! we love working on amazing toplines that are sent to us by songwriter friends of ours, but this one has a special place for us because of the way it came together so naturally with matt.

it was my last day in Italy and i had reserved a 125cc Vespa to take around town exploring Naples. when i got to the rental place though, i was informed they had messed up and rented the scooter to someone else. the only one they had left was 300cc, and was ready to be picked up a few miles away at the airport. i had met this girl while i was in croatia that ended up in italy with us, and since she had nothing to do that day she asked to tag along for whatever roads my two wheels ended up on. so we hopped in a Fiat and went to the airport to grab the freeway legal Vespa.

it was there that i found out that the Amalfi Coast was 40 minutes away, and since i had been dreaming of riding a moped down its winding roads since i was a kid, i took one look at my co-pilot and told her to hold on tight. 

we followed the Italian road signs as best we could and after making a few wrong turns we ended up in Amalfi, drinking Aperol Spritzes in the ocean. we went all the way to Sorento, after after another Aperol we made the impulse decision to get matching Vespa tattoos.

by the time we finished, it was about an hour til sundown, so we started making our way back to Naples for dinner with some friends. Naples is more or less West of Amalfi, which meant i was literally driving into the sun. i was nervous and crazy focused, and this song started looping in my head. i asked olivia to take my phone out and start a voice memo, and right there, on the highway of Naples, driving into the sun was born. i didn"t change a single word from that initial recording, which i ended up sampling throughout the song.

this is the last song on daddy"s money, but daddy"s money has no ending. daddy"s money is infinite, and daddy"s money is for the people. long live daddy"s money.
