Art Blocks is dedicated to bringing compelling works of contemporary generative art to life. This is the place where we tinker. What lives here is free of theme or architecture but the one common strand is that these projects all grant us delight.

Art Blocks Explorations

Since founding Art Blocks in 2020, artist Erick Calderon (a.k.a. Snowfro) has been intrigued by the idea of representing digital artwork in the physical world in the form of an ephemeral physical object with meaning, but with no inherent value. 

Donald Judd has long been an inspiration for Art Blocks. One aspect we admire most about Judds artistic practice is the elegance of design he effortlessly paired with the accessibility of materials that could be found at a hardware store. With Judd as inspiration, we hatched a plan to create a unique generative art friendship bracelet that includes instructions to make, in minutes, a simple bracelet using a few dollars worth of embroidery floss. Donald Judd believed that what surrounds us in our day-to-day life is already so beautiful, and that ultimately the experience of creating art is as important as owning it.

Erick was incredibly excited to collaborate with renowned artist Alexis Andr (a.k.a. MacTuitui) to bring generative art and ephemeral physical objects together in the form of friendship bracelets. Conceptualized by Erick and aesthetically and programmatically designed by Alexis, this project pairs creative coding with a beautiful spectrum of embroidery floss colors. The project was a true team effort, as each member of the Art Blocks team designed and named their own color palette!

The project is a token of our appreciation to the creators, makers, builders, and collectors who have all contributed to making the Art Blocks community what it is today. Participating in this project is a signal, both online and IRL, that youre a participant in this evolution of art + community. You are pushing the best ideas forward. You are the reason all of these imaginative projects come to life. Our community is what makes all of this possible. So, to say it plainly, we appreciate you, and we hope that youll accept this bracelet as a token of our special friendship!

PROXY

PROXY is a collection of 639 portraits generated from a pool of 322 pixel grids. Each grid carries the algorithmically evaluated dominant tones from photographic portraits of the United Nations global leaders found through a peculiarity of the UN Photo Library. The collection is a class photo featuring member states representatives and leaders of all departments, offices, subsidiaries, funds, programmes, bodies, commissions, agencies and organizations. 

In an attempt to refigure figuration, this collection abstracts away all sense of representation. It puts forward curated outputs generated by countless repetitive image interpolations of the initial pixel gridstransmuted surrogates of select political avatars.

Digging in the Blockchain (D.I.T.B.) has never felt so much like Diggin In The Crates (D.I.T.C.) This collection can be looked at as vinyl record warehouse named GRAND RISING, holding over 300,000 unique records, and the collectors can only leave with 420 copies.

Then the warehouse is destroyed.

Using music inputs created by Rare Scrilla & RoomInEight, the collectors are participating in creating these compositions by hitting the Mint Button. Essentially making a collaboration with Async's music generator. The artwork was created by Rare Scrilla and is based on vinyl record collecting, which Scrilla has been doing for over 20 years.

You may find yourself with a coveted Obi Strip. Some familiar and non- familiar names may show up on the records as you peruse the collection. Scrilla, who's been a DJ, record producer, and artist his whole life, will sometimes put stickers on the vinyl, or doodles on the cover, sometimes the records get worn out, and sometimes while digging he may find a record with a graphic error or a different version of a song that was published and distributed by someone else. These details have been thoughtfully used while creating this collection. The easter eggs are plentiful.

Kane Mayfield and DJ Q-Bert both lend their skills on certain rarer tracks. You may find a legendary from Fake Sketch or K-Beta, maybe an epic guitar rendition featuring Glenn Yeah. The only way to pull these records from the crates is to hit that mint button.

Scrilla, also known for his Rare Pepes and Fake Rares, dating back to when he began "tokenizing" art and music using the Bitcoin blockchain in 2016, brings some of that to some of the art and music as well. But, of course, like the best Pepes should be- They are Rare outputs.

Some record are denominated in Sats, some in ETH, some in BTC, and of course yer local record dealer will sometimes deal in Pepecash.

There are plans to press up the best songs, curated by YOU - the collector, and put the album on Digital Streaming Platforms (DSPs.)  Let's see what transpires from it all.
