What is DREAM.EXE?

DREAM.EXE is a series of 3d generative artworks by Visual Swim, distributed as a novel implementation of durable blockchain storage and ownership.

Each token is permanently preserved onto the Bitcoin blockchain, inscribed on individual satoshis as an Ordinal. Each piece of content is encoded with the OwnerName EXIF metadata, pointing to an ERC-721 contract address on the Ethereum blockchain. Ownership is trustlessly managed by this smart contract.

This is an entirely new way to store the assets that back non-fungible tokens on Ethereum.

By inscribing the asset that backs an NFT on the Bitcoin blockchain, certain guarantees are provided around durability and censorship resistance (as compared to IPFS or Arweave). Your asset will exist, in perpetuity, on the blockchain. It is not subject to governance or subjective limitations of the network participants.

The contemporary moment is defined by the appearance of artificial systems that mimic intelligent behaviours with uncanny skill: bots that you can converse with, machines that can act as pets, and even the algorithms that recommend ads to you. At times they appear as strange beings; alive. To make sense of this phenomenon, we are forced to reconsider our notion of the living state beyond what we are familiar with on Earth. 

Calian is an infinitely zoomable and scrollable exploration of lifelike behaviour. It exhibits ambiguous natural-digital forms in a dynamic rendering. Species grow and compete; they get carried by the elements; they face boom, bust, and echo. 

What makes something alive? To go beyond recognition of terrestrial biology we need to delineate general principles and apply them to new intelligent systems. Calian uses the fruits of my research into the origin of life to create persistent, complex systems that we can experience and study (*). We can identify properties of living matter but these fall short of a satisfactory and succinct criterion. When does agency begin? Or identity? Calian asks you to ponder this as you wander through its ecosystems. 

Feel free to explore but be careful: although life is pervasive, living things are delicate. Your interactions affect the ecosystem, obliquely. 

Calian continues a thread of my work probing deep scientific questions with artistic means. It furthermore connects to my previous Artblocks projects Mazinaw and Glass through the theme of ambiguity: while Mazinaw suggested the hand of an unknown creator, and Glass visualized the intrinsic ambiguity of our quantum mechanical universe, Calian"s amorphous forms bear characteristics both of familiar organic matter and digital technology. 

Interactive features allow you to explore each ecosystem, infinitely, both in depth and in scope. As you wander, the shader repopulates the world from its initial condition, while the physical laws governing the dynamics themselves evolve.

A Fog-ring drifting into infinity has been captured in a video symbolizing A.A.Murakami"s Mataverse installation at NFT Paris, 2023, "The Passage of Ra," where they continue to pioneer Ephemeral Tech.

"The Passage of Ra" will be forever captured in an 12-minute generative art video, which will be sold in 1-minute segments on MakersPlace in March 2023.

Art Blocks x Pace

The first component of a multidisciplinary project by A.A. Murakami, Floating World Genesis comprises 250 unique NFTs, each depicting one of three animated scenes chronicling the origins of life on Earth: a single microbial bubble that may split in two; clusters of self-organizing bubbles that represent the growth of multicellular life; and a single bubble situated on the horizon, signifying the formation of the Earths biosphere.

Inspired by the Miller-Urey experiment of 1953, which simulated conditions of the early Earth to explore how life first formed in the primordial oceans through self-organizing bubbles, the Floating World Genesis NFTs possess tranquil, meditative, hypnotic qualities often associated with minimalist painting and the Light and Space movement. Bubbles have been an enduring source of inspiration for A.A. Murakami, whose seminal work New Spring (2017) is an interactive, multi-sensory installation that produces mist-filled blossoms.

The formal dynamism of Floating World Genesis, which explores the kinetic possibilities of semi-abstracted bubbles, belies the projects technical complexity and its wide range of generative effects. Opacities and diffusions of color vary among the NFTs, as do the shapes and positions of the bubbles. Clear bubbles depicted against gradation backgrounds feature refractions of light and color. Some of the NFTs are stereoscopic, allowing viewers to have a three-dimensional experience and immersing them in a world of buoyant, ethereal bubbles.

A.A. Murakami is known for creating immersive, sensorial installations as part of a long-standing exploration of natural phenomena and systems. With these concerns at the center of the duos practice, A.A. Murakami has pioneered the development of ephemeral tech, or technology that is experienced not through standard interfaces like screens, but through ethereal and shifting matter, facilitating fleeting but deeply meaningful in-person experiences. With the multifaceted Floating World Genesis series, the duo aims to further explore this concept through what it has termed the mataverse, a space between the physical and digital worlds. Through future Floating World Genesis projects, A.A. Murakami will investigate the possibilities of art that lives on the blockchain and engages all the viewers senses in immersive and tactile physical environments.

Traveling through swirling trans-dimensional portals, the rabbit presides over scenes of mayhem and destruction. Evidence of the rabbit's role throughout history emerges in ancient documents, from Eastern block printing to Mughal Empire paintings to Medieval parchments, and mythic dot paintings. The rabbit has always been with us.

RABBIT TAKEOVER  is based on my irascible, aggressive, much-loved pet rabbit Pickles, who sadly passed away as this was being developed.
