MEMPHIS IN THE HOUSE 

ASICS was just me popping my shit. I made it at the beginning of the process of my EP "My Golden Horse" and the song is about getting up, strapping your boots (asics) and getting to work and forcing the outcome you wanna see in life, no matter the odds stacked against. A lot of artists in this space have existed in an industry that's relentless and unforgiving.... It took a lot for me to become a fan of myself and tell myself I was deserving of blessings. Also the outro of this song is insane and it brings me so much joy every time I hear it.

i started this song in the fall of 2021 after a fight with a family member. i felt so misunderstood and frustrated by how childish and inconsequential the fight was - on my way home i wrote the first lyric you said some things you never meant that you thought you did. as time passed, the fight that started with my family member shifted to one between me and myself. i was so disappointed at how much energy i let the entire situation take from me - the song became as much about a fight with myself as it is about a fight with someone else.  

in that moment i was certain that my relationships with my family member & myself would forever be deeply altered. but nothing actually changed - my wounds were just paper cuts. i wrote the lyric you dont hurt like you think you do, like a bug but i just scratch right through - and the rest of the song fell into place. i realized i wasnt writing about being angry or disappointed - i was writing about the power and amusement of realizing your own strength.

i produced the bones of the song as i wrote it. as the emotion of the song changed, i tried to make the songs darker, grittier elements to work in a light, playful way - the muted guitars and distorted bass line still drive the song, but the chord changes feel less serious. i sent the entire project over to my friend struan finlay in new zealand to fill out the rest of the production.
