Tales of The North

A fight against time. The clock is ticking. It seems to just go faster and faster.

The North still seems far away and the sun sets soon

We park our car next to a lake with gorgeous reflections of a majestic fell.

I hop out of the car, pickup my heavy backpack and start running to the lake  I take my camera out and then

I notice the light had just gone. Disappointment washed over me.

Only if we had arrived 5 minutes before, I thought.

The trip didnt promise to get much better from that. All I could see from a forecast was that it was cloudy.

I only had a handful of days in Lapland with my dad. And I badly wanted to photograph Northern Lights again.

Especially in Lapland  I never had seen them in The North before. My dream was to witness them here.  
 
Especially as theyre much more epic and powerful here compard to my hometown Kuopio, Finland.

I noticed that on this first night we might have a chance  but a very small one.

It wasnt clear skies. The forecast said itd be mostly cloudy and the Northern Lights forecast wasnt looking the best either.

I was trying to hide my frustration.

We went to check-in at the hotel without any good shots. And we went to sleep a couple of hours.

After that I woke up  like planned  and let my dad sleep. I opened my forecast and it had stayed the same. Mostly cloudy.

I was wondering whether we should go out or not. We had been driving the whole day. We were dead tired. And the forecast wasnt good.

We had all the reasons to not go.

If you slept, think about how cosy itd be. Youd get to wake up early for a nice hotel breakfast. Nobody would blame you

The worst thing  and the hardest thing  about excuses is, that theyre valid. But you cant let them stop you.

You need to quiet them. And so I did.

We were in Lapland afterall

We had this 1 night we could see some Lights.

Why would we not go for it? Now looking back it seems rather stupid we even thought this way. But thats how the human mind works

And then in the middle of the night, I made a decision.

After immediately stepping outside of the hotel  The Green Lady greeted at us.

I was so happy to see the Lights  but I couldn"t take a photo of it there yet. We had to travel to another spot. I prayed the Lights wouldnt disappear by then.

We were struggling to find the photo spot. I hadnt found great instructions online where it exactly is. And when there already is a Show going on  I was very stressed.

Once we figured out were it was, we just ran for it.

And thankfully, the show was still going on.

There was some clouds  sure. But the Northern Lights were still very visible.

I had been dreaming about photographing at this spot for ages  ever since I saw it on Instagram the 1st time.  
 
I wanted to photograph it no matter the conditions. But I had dreamt of getting the shot with The Northern Lights.

And now I was this close to making that happen.

Dad helped set up the tripod to get us shooting faster. I set up the composition  and ran to the shot.

I was sitting still on the swing  as I couldnt actually swing due to the long-exposure we were taking.

I stayed still for 15 seconds at the time.  
 
I held my breath. Didnt let myself move even an inch apart from my eyes.

The Northern Lights were erupting in front of my eyes. I was thinking how fortunate am I to be able to see these with my own eyes. And experience them with my dad.

I wanted to scream every time I saw the Lights speed up and spread more across the dark night sky.

I ran back and forth many times to see did we get what we were after. I couldnt stay inspecting the photos for long  as the Lights couldve disappeared any minute. And the clouds were starting to fill up the sky even more.

After the best show was over  I checked the photos I had got. I was blown away. I couldnt believe we had just pulled this off.

And then it was the time to go back and actually swing. And take some swinging photos just for the fun of it.

Swinging under the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland. I couldnt stop smiling. I couldnt stop swinging. I couldnt believe I got to witness this kind of a moment with my dad.

I was emotional. I focused my eyes on the dancing green sky, and let them wander there  until the Lights faded away to recover for another dance, another night.

Eternal Fortress #3/5

111 Yakeri created by an AI in a last ditch effort to populate EVRTH. In the year 3022, aliens came to earth. They were looking to repopulate the earth with their own species. The aliens had a plan in mind, they would create a new race of humans using DNA from all parts of history. They would then use this new race of humans to repopulate Earth and make it more like how it used to be before humans started living on it.

The aliens didn't know what would happen when they started experimenting on humans with DNA from all over the world. It turns out that most of these experiments went wrong and ended up creating something completely different from what they wanted.

The aliens called these creatures "Yakeri". They had no idea how the Yakeri were supposed to act or what they were supposed to do with them. The only thing they knew was that some of these Yakeri had survived their experiments and were now living

A yawn. Another yawn. And another yawn. It was 3:20 am. And time to get on top of a fell.

We started the hike after a long drive around 5 am. We hiked in pitch-black coldness but it was such an amazing experience. Stars, silence and snow crunching under us while we walk. The hike was fun and took us 1.5-2 hours I believe. There was potential for this to be an amazing sunrise.

My dad and I both were insanely tired. But the potential of the sunrise and the views that would soon be in front of us, gave us the push we needed.

Once we reached the top we were greeted by stunning views... but there was a thick layer of clouds in the horizon

"How could it be clear - but be cloudy in the horizon..."

I felt disappointed.  A worry came to my mind. We only had one try at this location.

 It did seem we might not get light when Id need it. During the golden hour.  

I didn"t let this stop me though. I started to work. I started finding compositions.

After eating a banana, and wandering around the fell looking for compositions, my eyes opened wide. I smiled and ran closer.

I found this tree. It was alone. It was perfect for a minimalistic shot. Now I just needed leading lines for a foreground.

I cant just run through the scene - otherwise itll ruin the shot - the potential leading lines - and the flow of the image, I analyzed the scene.

All this time I have been trying to find this tree on top of a fell. Now I have it here. I just need to leading lines cmoon Hugo you can find them, I hyped myself up.

I bypassed the tree and checked many potential leading lines. Nope, nope, nope, I counted.

But then I saw it, the lines that finally worked. I excitedly jumped on my stomach in the snow. I didnt care how hard itd be to get up from there. I was in the moment. Present with the tree.

I snapped the shot. I let out a huge sigh

After some time - we did get some stunning light. I couldn"t be happier. I ended up with many photos I was happy with.

But this tree shot became my favourite photograph from the shoot.

People seem to love this shot a lot as well. Always when I post it on social media it does super well.

Couldn"t ask for more. A beautiful sunrise. At a beautiful location. And dad alongside me on this adventure.

A beautiful way to start Tales of The North.
