One Night in August is a collection containing three phases that encapsulate different stages of a healing journey. This collection tells a story of where I've been, the emotions I've processed, and my reflections on growth and change. Art has been a massive tool in my emotional regulation over the years, and I truly believe art is therapeutic. If interested, take time to read each description of this collection to better tell my story with emotional turmoils, taking action, and reflection. At the minimum, this is a collection of cool art for you to enjoy. 

Phase One tells the story of rising and unruly emotions. 
Phase Two illustrates the process of healing. 
Phase Three is all about the reflection  its the art made from the metaphorical emotional summit.

It's 2015 and I'm sitting in a recliner watching the sun come up. I haven't slept that night, my eyes are throbbing, and I can feel the few chips I tried to eat getting digested in my stomach. Nothing about this experience is glamourous. While I was surrounded by people all night, I felt alone. I longed for the night to end, the sun to come up. Now it's finally happening and I realize that I'll need to be social once again.

I have this promise to myself now that I let people know when I'm thinking about them. If they cross my mind, I send them a text. If they inspire me, I let them know. If I like their outfit, I compliment them! If some form of love for someone else crosses my mind, I make sure it gets expressed outwardly. I've come to learn that those thoughts aren't always for me, but I'm meant to pass them on. Sharing that kindness becomes a ripple effect.

I've found time to move so differently nowadays. Days feel like weeks, weeks feel like months. Years are starting to feel like decades and I am starting to feel exhausted.

I grew up right outside of Washington DC and there's a Mormon Temple right off of the highway. As a child, I often thought it was Disneyland, or the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz. I couldn't make sense of why such an interesting building would exist in what seemed like the middle of the woods. As I left my hometown and became more distant from my past, I began to see the cracks and criticize where I came from. I now find DC transplants pretty insufferable, and have very few reasons to go home. What was once a "Disneyland" in my head is now more like the tower of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. This piece is meant to depict that.

The opposite of ego is self pity, but both of these means lead to the same end: self centeredness. How do I work on self centeredness? What can make me feel other-centered? In my experience, I can stop thinking about myself when I'm focused on other people. I believe this is one of the most important paradoxes of life -- help others and you will feel better. It doesn't make any sense, there's nothing about it that gets me excited about it in the moment, but undoubtedly I will feel better when I help others.

The desert rain forms with mud and sun to sculpt a bowl, a crater for mixing, combining, and transformation.

The dry wind hides the imprints of the past and writes in her ancient language upon the surface of the sands. When she is finished with her poem, and there is a moment of stillness and balance, and the moon is lost from the sky, one might light a flame at dusk and read the scripture in the sand to call something out of the darkness.
