Generative Design Studies

The Generative Design Studies series draws inspiration from the foundations of geometric abstraction and op art, paying homage to renowned artists like Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, and Richard Anuszkiewicz.

The aim is to examine how basic, static shapes and different perspectives can create the impression of warped space, captivating the viewer and directing their gaze. This process blurs the distinction between three-dimensional and two-dimensional spaces within the artwork.

Building on this is the introduction of an autonomous generative system, through a self-coded algorithm that can randomly rearrange shapes within a grid, including lines, circles, squares, and triangles, while also varying their points of origin, adding dimensions to the work whilst also creating an infinite number of artworks.

From these outputs, the artist has carefully curated a selection, to then offer a meticulous rendering on paper by using a pen plotter.

Fibrant

With Fibrant, I have explored a concept that I refer to as "digital weaving." I have worked with threads so thin that they could barely be seen with the naked eye, so numerous that I would have been an old man before I could have finished just one piece by hand, and where each strand has been dyed in a unique shade of color. Expanding on the age-old concept of creating something beautiful with thin threads, I follow in the footsteps of fellow artisan weavers, expanding physical techniques into the digital realm.

Fibrant has 31 carefully curated palettes that give the artwork its distinct character. Often, the palette name can hint at the inspiration for that particular palette. I"ve also incorporated five different modeshorizontal lines, vertical lines, lines constrained to a circle, lines constrained to a rectangle, and wavy vertical lineseach adding a subtle variation to the core concept and allowing collectors to find their own favorites among the different styles.

Creating Fibrant was a journey filled with challenges and experimentation. The artwork"s algorithm evolved from a simple core concept to a more complex design, and ultimately, I returned to a refined version of the initial concept after removing extraneous elements that didn"t align with my vision. This process of refining and simplifying the algorithm allowed Fibrant to retain its soul while still offering a visually complex and engaging experience.

Developed using JavaScript and the p5.js framework, Fibrant is a testament to the power of technology in enhancing traditional artistic techniques. The result is a rich, vibrant digital artwork that invites viewers to immerse themselves in its intricate patterns and discover the hidden meanings within.

Foundation

Just three days after installing Touch Designer, watching several hours of tutorials, two book purchases and a lot of trial and error, I have my first generative art piece. Yes, I have a lot more to learn, but the idea is to mint and list pieces along the way. This one represents how my artworks will start off simplistic, but grow and evolve as I add to my skillset.
