Feeling the unspoken energy of someone through their body beyond their words; I was continually trapping myself inside a web governed by Neptune and the refusal to face reality. In Your Hands was the exact point of surrender. I had spent my life forcing situations, exhausting my heart hoping for love where it was not available. For the first time, I was able to let go and trust in something greater.

Netflix

The inception of Netflix occurred whilst I created a remix for Reo Craguns Zoom competition with Arpeggi Labs. When the opportunity arose, I swore that I was going to seize it. My goal was to make everyone who heard it say Ayo Who the hell is this guy?. Well, I guess it worked, because it got me here.

In honour of the remix that led me to my Genesis on Sound, I remixed my own remix! Taking vocals from the initial track, I flipped the acapella in true grime fashion, building a new track with the essence of Elcee the Alchemist. 

Dont be fooled however, this is only the tip of the iceberg. I intend to spin your head with each release, exposing new parts of my soul and bringing you deeper into my mind. Im on a journey to express the most obscure nuances of my existence, from the highest highs to the lowest lows, from the wildest mosh pits to those solitary moments. I hope to bring you all on my journey, as I hope I can become a part of yours.

The Talking Palm Tree

This was the first ever track I fully self-produced that didn"t sound like a basicbish beat. It was also the first music I made after completely abandoning & deleting my old artist project. Something awakened, literally over night. The Talking Palm Tree was essentially the official doula for the birth of ALYSS and the first offering from my upcoming Answers EP (track 1/5).

At the time of writing the lyrics, I was learning about the Lilith archetype in both astrological and mythological terms. Symbolically, Lilith represents everything natural, raw and untouched. She is the place of total freedom within each of us. The place we are unashamedly who we are without limitation, self-judgement or fear of what the world thinks. Energetically, she is the unconfined wild side we"ve locked away and after having caged myself creatively for so long, discovering her felt like a huge kick up the ass to all the blocks Id built up inside.

The same way she initiated a dormant voice within me through "The Talking Palm Tree, it only felt right that she lay the ground for my genesis footstep into the terrain of web3. May this song activate a core essence within you. We see you <3

Grief

Grief expresses that moment in the life-death-rebirth cycle when we are finally ready to let go of something. That turning point when suddenly there is nothing more left to say. No more need to analyse, discuss, think about, talk about why the ending is happening. The only thing left to do is surrender to the truth of what is. To turn away from the story of it and turn your attention on tending to yourself and your heart so that you may process, heal and, in so doing, be renewed.

This song is as much a love song to the dance as it is a song about heartbreak. For me, dance has always been a powerful form of alchemy - supporting me in transmuting the painful lessons of life into wisdom and experience. Whatever comes by way, I know that I can take it to the dance floor - whether it be a Berlin nightclub, the beautiful church where I practiced 5Rhythms movement meditation for many years, a beach in Thailand or my own bedroom - and be held by the music as I dance through my emotions back to a state of rootedness in myself.

The track came through me almost fully formed in just one session. It was the first time I was experimenting with doing my own production and once I built out the beat, the melody and lyrics just flowed out as if they were already hanging in the air just waiting to be sung. 

I wanted to explore a darker, more experimental production than my previous works, whilst still finding a way to stay true to my signature medicine music style. To me, this style is identified by a cyclical structure that isnt so much verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle 8 etc, but is more about vocal parts that work alone almost like mantras but also can be layered up to create a whole soundscape of voices, allowing the listener to get lost in the parts whilst still receiving the essential message of the track.

Grief is the single from my upcoming EP Odyssey. It is the first chapter in a 4-part story of initiation onto the path of The Heart - the start of a journey that begins in the underworld and ends in the stars.

The winner of the Golden Egg will have the opportunity to be a part of my songwriting process for a new track. The inspiration for the song will be led by the Golden Egg winner and they will be named in the credits.

Light in the Dark

This song is about committing to being open, about allowing for the darkness *and* the light. 

But this recording, this release, this is about the power of friendship and collaboration. 

Without the prompt from my friend to just write and record one quickly, I wouldnt have. Without Zac singing with me, Scott making the mix, and ATW designing the cover this song is just another session on my hard drive. 

And without you collecting it, its another bundle of bits floating by on the endless stream. Thank you for doing more than just listening.

Sound of Fractures - 1st Year Anniversary

A year since my first mint and what a year its been. 

As musicians we find it so hard to stop and take in what we"ve achieved, we feel constantly exhausted but never look back at the why, as we are always focussed on what next... so for the 1 year anniversary of my first mint Ive put together a timeline of all my releases on chain... its crazy to look at it laid out this way, and honestly I"m really proud. I"ve done it my way and for the right reasons, and if you stick to that ethos then regardless of what metrics others judge success by, you can always look back and be happy with your work.

This year has totally changed my experience of being a musician, and although we still work crazy hard, what Ive got back while experimenting with web3 tools has been so much more rewarding for me.

La Rumba is a collaboration between Xcelencia and Dance music producer Gianni Blu. Collectively both artists have over 100M streams and joined forces to release their new Latin House single combining musical fusions from different parts of the world. 

We got inspired by the recent surge in Latin House music taking the industry by storm. We were sitting on this single for some time waiting for the right moment. Releasing this song is one of our top priorities going into 2023 and we have a few exciting plans for this one..

"Back Home" is a tale about a musician"s life on the road touring, chasing a dream while missing the people they love the most and leave behind while on their musical journey.

Dre from "The Gooneez" says this about the lyrics, "At the time we were writing this song, me and my cousin Frank had been gone doing a lot of shows on tour but were missing our family & friends that we were both needed some sense of normalcy again to our soul that only home can bring."

The song also features a live band production from The Gooneez own backline that brings a true feel to the sound of the track.

"Back Home" is the second drop on sound xyz from the Southern California alternative hip-hop group.

ABOUT THE RELEASE:

Welcome to the Fever Dream sessions.

The songs from this session have an energy that came from being pent up and isolated for over a year during lockdown, to being around each other again and playing music in the same room. And it wasn"t just any room either, our friend Darrell Thorp invited us to record this 3-track session in the gorgeous rooms at The Village in LA.

After an anxious year of pandemics, covid variants, personal health scares, and all the other bad juju the quarantine era brought, this session was a perfect oasis to break the anxiety that had built up since the lockdown began.

That"s why the joyous energy had us buzzing. How cool was it to be around each other again, playing music with the best people, in the best place? Hopefully, some of that good vibe comes through in the music, and that the songs will help release the feverish anxiety into joyous catharsis.

Track 1 of 3: Haymaker

Edson Choi on the meaning behind the song:

I used to be deeply religious, doing ministries and community outreach weekly. One day, the sum of my doubts just hit me. I realized this or any religion wasn"t for me.
 
I had built my life up to that point around this ideology; my friends, my community and plans for the future were centered around this faith. But to stay would be to betray myself and my new epiphany. And so, despite the comfort of belief and loving friends I made through my years in the ministry, I walked away and had to relearn thinking and how I should be living.
 
This rude awakening hit me like a punch to the gut, a blinding haymaker to the face. 
 
The song came many years after that experience, and it instead of it being a bitter takedown of faith and belief, I hope it highlights the beauty in the flaws of our world now. I hope it gives the energy of appreciating the beauty of our world and this life here, not a distant heaven. I tried to capture this thought with the song"s closing lines:
 
"I"m just staring at too many stars againdon"t judge me, cause we"re all gonna go sometime."
