This series delves into a glitch style technique called pixel sorting, which is generally known to be used as a post-processing method in photography. Pixel sorting is a procedure that isolates segments of pixels and sorts their positions based on any number of criteria (i.e. luminosity, hue, saturation). 

Assorted Positivity is a generative approach to making pixel sorting art without any photographic base. The algorithm uses several types of noise to generate an initial design, each one unique to the token and specifically conducive to pixel-sorting. The sorting displaces pixels in various directions based on their grayscale value; and hues determine how the sorting ends. Sometimes the sorting lends itself to a sort of drip look and other times it presents itself as depth and shading.

This project was initially influenced by my desire to sort past the ubiquitous negativity online and focus on the positivity, generosity, and genuine thoughtfulness that I have witnessed around this genart space--with collectors, artists, and people who simply appreciate the community.

Integrated into each piece is an uplifting adjective that is visible, yet blended into the art. At a glance, the viewer may not notice the steganographic message that is conveyed by an international visual method of telegraphing words. Each word is one that I imagine being used to describe people in the community, their actions, artists, and/or their work.

Every output brings me joy, and is a reminder to treat others with kindness and positivity.

Watch as the pixels sort themselves out.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward the international Make-A-Wish Foundation in the hopes of bringing some joy to critically ill children around the globe.

Flows by ryley-o.eth

Flows uses the mathematics of aerodynamics to animate colorful particles and forms that move through underlying flow fields. Potential Flow Theory, a cornerstone of traditional aerodynamic analysis, is the basis for all outputs in this project.

From an aerospace engineer"s perspective, these functions are powerful tools to simulate airflow on the wing of an airplane or weather patterns over a geographical area, but rarely are we given the freedom to explore the potential for beauty. Generative art is a wonderful platform to showcase this because it is simply math and physics given shape and color.

Subtle nods to my background in the aerospace industry are given throughout the project. Outputs include particles that traverse along pathlines, simulating particle tracer analysis methods. Some palettes limit their colors to the conventional analytical color spectrum of red to blue. Regions of smooth color gradients are broken up by discontinuities, inspired by Schlieren photographs of shockwaves.

Flows, however, intentionally breaks away from many analytical conventions. This is largely representative of my personal journey out of the aerospace industry and into the world of generative art. Streamlines are replaced by winding, spiraling forms that twist through underlying scalar potential fields instead of aligning with them. Pixelated, analytical graphs are replaced with smooth GPU animations rendered in real-time.

An extra personal touch is given to this project, inspired by my son born with Down syndrome. Token #21 will have a unique blue and yellow palette titled "Inclusion". 100% of artist royalties from sales of that token will be donated to Down syndrome related charities, in perpetuity.

Thoughts of Meadow by Eric Davidson

These shapes are nothing more than rectangles and lines.

And yet...

There is a concept in painting called "pentimento", the presence of earlier forms or images that have been painted over. These could be changes that the artist made deliberately, or mistakes that they were able to cover. Sometimes as the paint fades, the pentimenti will be revealed, but often they will remain unseen.

The challenge is to recognize the pentimenti that influence the canvas, but cannot be found there even at the base layer. These are scattered throughout the years of the artist"s life.

"Thoughts of Meadow" is a generative system that distorts a chess-like grid into complex shapes. Many of the outputs give the illusion of immense three-dimensional structures using simple geometric principles. It is an attempt to represent the concept of "pentimento" through the rendering process. Each layer builds upon the complexity of the previous one but also covers it. If you look closely through the gaps in the grid, you can see the incremental changes that took place.

In that sense, this project is a reminder for myself of where I"m from, an incredibly small town called Meadow, and the gratitude I feel for the years I spent there. The first layer of my life"s pentimento.

As always, I doubt this project would exist without the work and observations of Vera Molnr. Squares were certainly made for her, I just appreciate being able to borrow them once in a while.

 The Wiiides collection is inspired in part by Alvin Lucier and his 1969 work titled I am Sitting in a Room. The artwork is a recording of his voice played back in a room, re-recorded, and played back repeatedly, until nothing remained but distortion. Through transactions on the Ethereum blockchain, Wiiides will stretch and become distorted until just a few horizontal lines of color remain. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of economic activity or transactions on a blockchain, but more as a way to smooth out any traits these NFTs may have. Wiiides are a fully on chain artwork, meaning all data and artwork are stored on the Ethereum blockchain. Wiiides draws its data directly from the on chain CryptoPunks, and programmatically edits the data based on the growth rate of each Wiiide and the number of transfers. 

 Wiiides can be understood in a copypasta Post-Modern Waluigi-analysis, in which Wiiides are the ultimate example of a collection shaped by the signifier. Wiiides as a collection can only be seen in mirror images; lost in a hall of mirrors they are a reflection of a reflection of a reflection. You start with CryptoPunks, the wholesome iconic punks, you reflect them to create On-chain CryptoPunks, the same thing but the data is on chain. You invert CryptoPunks to create CryptoPhunks, punks turned septic and libertarian, then you reflect the inversion in the reflection: you create a collection who can only exist in reference to others. Wiiides is the true nowhere collection, without the other collections they reflect, invert and parody they have no reason to exist. Wiiides identity only comes from what and who they are not, without a wider frame of reference they are nothing. Wiiides is not a collection unto itself. In a world where our identities are shaped by our warped relationships to brands and commerce we are all wiiide.
