In*Monument*, Golids signature grammar of cubic shapes, black lines and luminous colour is instantly recognisable. In this series, geometric forms take on a new verticality. Inspired by the aesthetic of Brutalism, shapes ascend like totems of concrete architecture. Flawed, repetitive patterns have always been an interesting aesthetic to me, and where else does one find it more prominently than along the vertical facades of high-rise buildings? asks Golid. The artist is interested in the pattern and structure of these buildings and the way in which these patterns are disrupted by the presence of people. For example, the way in which an open window or a closed curtain interrupts the architectural uniformity of a modernist high-rise building.

An algorithm inspired by the classifieds section of old newspapers

Before social media, people would use classified ads to find services, jobs, and even partners. The charm of this medium for me was its brevity, akin to a tweet where you had limited characters to describe yourself, your service, or your request. Despite its basic functionality, the columns and rows, font size, and occasional clipart created density throughout the page that I found interesting to look at.

The algorithm uses a grid ranging from 3x3 to 20x20, with each cell further divided within the same range. Each cell represents an individual listing, and instead of text, it's randomly filled with polygons to create varying densities. The resulting outputs range from near-identical to more free-form.

Atlas is a collection of interactive abstract kinetic paintings illustrating the paradoxical unity of living creatures. Beneath a dynamic but integrated whole, competing cells bubble in disquiet. As perhaps we all do.

Colour is used to represent the cellular dynamics, each piece evolving under its own laws.  Cells are rendered in various palettes and several shapes  from round to square, luminous, and Escher-like. Zooming in you can see the wild nature of individual elements.

Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself. I am large; I contain multitudes.

I had no idea what that would mean.
That, for now, all we have left of our home in Sudan is our memories.

The broken system officially broke,
And the people took the broken roads right out of town.

Were the ladies dressed in bright colors and patterns as they escaped to the sound of bombing?
When a Sudanese home goes up in smoke does it smell like sandalwood incense?
Do the walls covered in hopeful graffiti still stand?
Does the mango tree still bear fruit, and does it remember our family?

Has the war reached the school we built? Do the walls still stand?
How many years will it be before the school system reopens?
Will the idea that a school would be used for ... school  
be a mere memory of a good intention?

When the rebel army broke into our abandoned home,
Ransacked everything the Sudanese part of our family owns,
Then went upstairs, and found the beginnings of a learning center,
Intended to giving young bright Sudanese people a window into the world of blockchain and AI,
Any chance they didnt steal everything?
Or is our learning center ... a mere memory ... of a good intention?

When the rebel army chose to live in our abandoned home for a term,
Did they feel and sense our memory echoing off the walls?
If we are ever able to return, will we feel and sense the memory of them?

If my niece-in-law (who is two  or maybe three now) has already forgotten the anthem,
and refers to the family home as the house of shooting,
what does that mean for the future of Sudan?

If all the displaced Sudanese people are able to hold onto their memories,
treasure them, and someday bring them back to Omdurman,
Can Sudan be regenerated ... like a forest after a wildfire ...
perhaps stronger and less broken than it was before?

_Bakhoor Assandal_ is an animated generative series made in JavaScript and GLSL. The name refers to the incense made from sandalwood that is common in Sudan. While sandaliya is the oil of sandalwood used as perfume, Bakhoor Assandal is the incense, burned on coals, made from the same wood. One could say it is the same substance gone up in smoke.

This project is a continuation of _Sandaliya_, a series that interweaves personal memories and familial connections in Sudan against the growing conflict. In April 2023, a civil war ignited, and many were forced to evacuate. _Bakhoor Assandal_ uses JavaScript and GLSL to create outputs in constant disarray. With a particular focus on movement, the algorithm builds layer by layer, with each pixel in perpetual shift, never replicating its past form  a testament to lifes relentless change. Like the ephemeral smoke of burning incense, we must embrace the flow, knowing we will remember the scent.

The button has been in a continuous state of shapeshifting over the expanding history of collective interface design. Endless webpages filled with designs, haptics, styles, expressions, subcultures, interactions, effects, all layered over this simple and elemental entity leaving in its wake a fundamental material presence within interface culture.

The internet is an unimaginably vast ecology of data and processes. Deeply stored data is immutable like buried granite, where other is constantly in flux like a rushing mountain stream. The whole system is in continuous evolution through endless processes reshaping the data interacting with each other and with ourselves. At the opaque surface of this churning ocean of bits is the exchange between both the realm of the computer and that of ourselves. The interface. And in the centre of this human machine culture lives the button. A binary entity reaching out from the very core of the machine's logic to touch, at the surface, our reaching finger, after which it dives back down in order to toggle some state from a zero to a one.

Art Blocks x Pace

Tara Donovans first-ever NFT project, titled QWERTY, comprises 500 unique, generative works that meditate on the ways that type can function as a building block for creating pattern. Donovan, whose practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, and printmaking, often explores the talismanic qualities of everyday materials and objects. The artists new NFT series is deeply engaged with her screen drawings, in which she moves, pinches, and cuts the wires of woven aluminum insect screen to extract patterns from existing grids, using a mathematical methodology to draw out the phenomenological potential of the material.

Each NFT in Donovans QWERTY series depicts rhythmic, mesmeric arrangements of a single, repeating letter or symbol represented on computer keyboards. The 26 letters and 30 symbols that make up the layered, gridded compositions of the QWERTY NFTs are rendered in varying degrees of legibility, striking a balance between recognizability and obscurity. These screen-based images take on the qualities of woven textiles, and they are the result of the artists meticulous pattern development, organization, and refinement, which she executed through algorithmic processes.

The first 56 individuals to mint QWERTY NFTs will each receive an archival pigment print of their NFT from the artist and Pace Verso. These works will be signed by Donovan. Complete terms and conditions will be available on Paces website before the projects release on October 10.

Donovans QWERTY NFT project can be understood as an extension of the eponymous book she published in 2018, which features patterns the artist forged using characters from a 1930s typewriter. Both the digital and physical iterations of QWERTY reflect Donovans interest in surface depth and perspectival mutability. Her QWERTY NFTs shapeshift and transform depending on viewers position relative to their screens, bringing ghostly shapes and figurative elements into relief in the compositions interstitial spaces. The wide range of patterns in the QWERTY NFTs includes subtle, minimalist grids; architectural forms; psychedelic motifs; and optical illusions.
