Within this domain, String Theory emerges as a quantum plunge into a terrain I once identified as The Edge of Reality. Comprising ten narratives situated in an ostensibly divergent era, String Theory beckons us to dismantle our perception of reality, unraveling it into ethereal strands of color that resemble an infinite tapestry woven by the very fabric of our sensory encounters.

Through this project, I sought to depict a diverse array of scenarios where subjects and environments were deconstructed into ephemeral strands of texture and color, reminiscent of an imperceptible barcodean encrypted language of the unseen.

My creative process germinated years ago with The Edge of Reality, an exploration that entailed the creation of digital collages meticulously crafted from vintage postcards. Once the foundational composition is established, I embark on the laborious undertaking of manually stretching select areas of the image, transmogrifying them into delicate tendrils of elongated pixels. These vivid pixel strands are fastidiously chosen and orchestrated to confer equilibrium upon the compositions without compromising the essence of the subjects they envelop.

Through this project, I sought to depict a diverse array of scenarios where subjects and environments were deconstructed into ephemeral strands of texture and color, reminiscent of an imperceptible barcodean encrypted language of the unseen. Through this process, I worked to decode our collective perception of reality, rearranging its constituent elements in a novel fashion. However, as I commenced my collaboration with AI, I encountered instances where subjects were disassembled and rearranged into an array of heterogeneous, and at times repetitive, patterns. This exploration resonates with the very appellation of the series, drawing inspiration from the homonymous principle in quantum mechanics. String Theory postulates the existence of multiple realities within an infinite matrix, where the passage of time eludes linearity.

**Form**

Its the toy you played with as a kid. You dont remember who gave it to youmaybe it was your dads. You held the block in your hand, rotated the parts randomly and scrambled it into a mess of color. The game was built for logical reasoning but there was no logic in your motionsyou were having fun. Then came the desire to solve it; but without internet or a guide, you didnt know the algorithm required and it was beyond you to derive it. You could solve one side, maybe two, but never the entire thing; for that you need to know the seemingly random motionsbut actually a calculated algorithm. So the block was left on the shelf in the closet.

Then you return to it one day, older and wiser. Now you have the internet and a computer science degree, you go through the motions and put the algorithm into practice. Sometimes you mess up, break the algorithm, and you get frustrated and start over. Suddenly you become like a robot making ever precise movements, and you finally solve it. You put the block down, satisfied and smug, you feel smart even though the solution is well known. You decide never to scramble it again since, to be fair, the solving process wasnt as fun as the un-solving. So it goes back onto the shelf in the closet.

Then you return to it one day resolving to make a generative art collection that captures the feeling you had when you solved it and realized your childhood was over.

Solve-Un-Solve mirrors the uncleanliness of life. Its a puzzle that creates problems for itself. Its a puzzle that also tries to solve itself.

**Function**

Each piece in the collection will first un-solve (where blocks are randomly rotated and translated from their initial positions), then solve (where the blocks are rotated so that each side of the structure has a uniform color), and finally reset itself (where the blocks return to their initial positions). Each piece is therefore its own puzzle and there is a secret logic to solve every one. Fortunately, the viewer will never have to understand the methods to get a solutionbut they can find pleasure in the show as the structure changes infinitely on its own.

Solve-Un-Solve #12

EmProps OpenStudio

"One Thousand Elegies" is a very-long-form AI collection. One thousand editions of variable prompt-based, raw AI paintings.

This project  both the individual pieces and the collective whole  is a personal attempt to express my pain, guilt, empathy, confusion ... and the thousand other inexpressible emotions I feel when I look helplessly at the inhumane violence taking place in the world today. It is an epic; intentionally grand in scale, diverse, complex, abstract, messy, and contradictory. 


In these works I"m channeling some of my favorite painters from all periods of art history, from Pontormo to Soutine, Sonia Delaunay to Richard Diebenkorn, El Greco to Bill Traylor, Alice Neel to Goya, from Franz Kline to Amy Sillman ... and of course there"s Robert Motherwell"s haunting and heroic "Elegy to the Spanish Republic" series of paintings in the mix.

But this isn"t just an exercise in remixing art history, it"s more about my own efforts to make new paintings that feel new and private and deeply personal to me, while using samples from these artists that I know and love as my toolkit.

This project is also a continuation of what I really commenced with my collection "Onism," where I felt that I could make all the paintings I wish I"d made but never did. Where I could start to almost conceptualize infinite possibilities  infinite possible outcomes, infinite possible selves.

And of course it"s about the perplexing idea that these digital images that I"ve created at arm"s length via AI, can feel so expressive and imbued with emotion.

I also keep coming back to this poem, "The Children"s Elegy," by Muriel Rukeyser 

Yes, I have seen their eyes. In peaceful gardens

Composition #92 (Digital) is a series of 250 generative digital drawings, based on software written by Marcel Schwittlick and built on a base of millions of recorded mouse movements that Schwittlick has compiled over time.

The database of recorded mouse movements constitutes an extensive digital library of at-first-glance random scribbles. Are these drawings really random? What is randomness? John Cage said: the first question I ask myself when something doesn"t seem to be beautiful is why do I think it is not beautiful? and very shortly you discover there"s no reason. If we can conquer that dislike or begin to like what we did dislike, then the world is more open. Can one say the drawings derived from mouse movements are random? They might appear soulless, perhaps, but are they, really?

Entropy

Audiovisual pairings: Singles #2

"Entropy" was directly inspired by @producedbydav"s recent generative audiovisual CC0 project "Particles," released on Prohibition.art.

I was excited about the project and minted a number of Particles, including Particles #176. I was immediately inspired by the sound of #176, and felt compelled to write an entire piece around the sample.

The resulting work is "Entropy."

Accompanying the music are three images, which present a 3D modeled digital sculpture from three different perspectives. The sculpture is set within AI generated imagery, which was created using the image for Particles #176 and my own 3D modeled image combined as sources for AI transformation.

One collector of these works will also receive the 3D digital sculpture itself.
