Backstory:

Created in spring of 2013 in my San Pedro apartment overlooking The Port of Los Angeles...

It was my day off and I was alone, burning Nag Champa while cleaning and blasting "Let me ride" by Windy City with all the windows open and my front door open...

I was blessed in that apartment for the single reason it was the only apartment I ever lived in where it didn"t matter what time of day or night it was, I could blast and or work on music at max volume and have no issues......

So i"m just minding my own business, dusting and cleaning while dancing around my living room when I get tapped on my shoulder and commence to shriek like a stereotypical movie schoolgirl that just saw a bug.....     Definitely caught me off guard haha, My neighbor, "Dimples" bursts into laughter making fun of my high pitched squeal then passes me the fresh spliff she just rolled....  My Neighbors Dimples & Granny were cool AF and loved me, but until then neither had been inside my place, we always just chilled sitting in front of their apartment.....

She apologized for just walking in unannounced but said her and granny had been sitting on the porch for hours just soaking up all the music I was blasting and asked me the name of the song and artist I was playing before Windy City....  Since I played the entire EP front to back right before that I was able to tell her it was IMAN OMARI, she asked what the two songs were I kept repeating and i told her probably "Midnight" and "Energy" hahah, She then saw all my equipment and asked if I was A DJ.....  I laughed and said, occasionally but beats and rhymes were more my forte, and she asked what kind of music and I just pulled up myself on google (back when google worked and my name still yielded over 2 million search results) She was shocked and said "I could tell you were a soulful white boy, but I had no idea you had more soul than some of my own people" ... I laughed and said thanks for not making an Eminem or Vanilla Ice Reference and she said you"re more like Mos Def or Common, I didn"t hesitate a moment before showing her I was once on the same Label as both artists she mentioned "Rawkus Records" and then she called granny in to show her........  granny and I were closer and she already knew I made music, so she just said "I"ve been telling you for months that poor soulful white boy next door needs to stop letting that pretty asian girl back into his home and just focus on work and music" I said, she isn"t asian, she"s navajo.....    She said,  "Honey I don"t care what the hoe is, or how magical that ***** is, she"s got dark energy and you don"t"  then she walked back outside......

Dimples stayed and did the unexpected but also cliche and expected thing a music lover does when they find out you make music and close enough to see your equipment and say....

"I wanna see how you make music"

So I said, bet.....  How about you tell me your favorite sample and then she disappeared for like 15 minutes....   She came back in and handed me a CD and said, This is friends music, can you make something from my favorite song on here.....

Then watched me from start to finish create the song.... Granny walked in halfway through it so I decided to flip it again so she could see the process, hence the change up....

This was a dope day that brings me joy being able to revisit anytime I hear this track.... 

and thus.... "Dimples" was born.

BONUS LORE:

Another older track that should have been on "Chill Gawd, Chill" but It was hidden in an unnamed folder and forgot about it until the tape was already released.

People weren"t happy when they got the Cassette Version of "Traversal" and this song was not on there.......    but to me, I was just correcting the timeline =)

Backstory:

Sigh.....haha

Picking back up from where left off with creation of "YEBICHAI SWEAT" in November  of 2012,  We fast forward just a few months....   A Vicious cycle of showing back up at my apartment, crying asking for forgiveness and promising things will change and me being trapped in the "see the best in people, and forgiveness is much less heavy than holding resentment is" arc.....          Again, this theme would continue until april 2014.... but we live and learn haha.

I don"t need to go into details via backstory,  the music pretty much speaks the context...

Don"t I look silly...  haha.

I ended up dropping this on Soundcloud on March 6th of 2013, but I know the track was created before that,  just can"t remember when.....     either way.....      way too small of a peaceful arc between break up tracks....

and thus,  ShameOnYu was born...

Backstory:

Created in November of 2012 in my San Pedro apartment that overlooked the Port of Los Angeles.

My homie and fellow producer Eroda was over at the crib and wanted to help keep my mind and spirit occupied by challenging me to a beat battle....   only he didn"t want us to flip the same sample, just wanted us to both go into headphones and start and finish a beat from scratch and see who finishes first....

He was very conscious of how sad I was having to kick out my ex (again) which is why he came over to keep me company, what wasn"t conscious of at the time was the little well intentioned distraction he attempted create turned into one of the most hyper focused, super intentionally not distracted from my emotions or the situation sessions I would have up until that point.  Long Story Short.... I used that time to express and cope and work through not being able to understand why the person I moved across the country for and treated better than anyone else in the world, kept doing super dark sh*t hahaha (this on and off saga would continue for 2 more years after this, which wasn"t great for my soul or spirit but I made sure every bit of friendly fire I received during that time was channeled and time stamped into artistic expression)

A lil background/context... 

My ex was 100% Navajo..... I think that"s all the context I need to divulge to better understand the music attached.

The concept is in the title of the song......  I will let you dig for more context around what the "YEBICHAI SWEAT" ritual is but in terms of the song.....  The first half of the song I envisioned my ex or myself even, pre-ritual energy......  The second half of the song is meant to be post Ritual Energy, The healing ARC.......     

The song didn"t exactly fix anything in her or my life IRL... but man, talk about the healing powers of music.... Getting Lost in the process of consciously executing my vision and working through those emotions in real time definitely felt cathartic and therapeutic at the time.....

I finished the track, smirked.... turned around and asked Eroda, "you finished yet?" he said "not even close, don"t tell me you finished already?!" I smirked and asked if he would like to wait until he"s finished with his track before hearing mine.....   He said no, lemme hear what you did.......     I told him that everything you hear outside of the drums will be from the sample I let ride in the intro and outro of the track.....    Pressed Play...  watched in real time as his jaw dropped....   The track ended and he immediately powered off his laptop hahaha.  I told him the concept and inspiration for the track and he said "I could tell, but the whole point of this was to get your mind off her" and laughed....   I told him, distractions are appreciated but if you sit me at my magic music musician while I"m going through unresolved feelings, the first thing my instincts will shout out to me is...... Time to process and work through it....

and thus.... YEBICHAI SWEAT was born.

BONUS CONTEXT:

You see the date this song was created right? This was well before I even began working on "The Uproot"....     When I was in Upstate NY working on The Uproot and Traversal and decided to release the 2 HR tape of loose tracks created during my 2012 - 2014 Los Angeles arc "Chill Gawd, Chill"...  I had a hard time not putting this song on "Chill Gawd, Chill" because it was created during that time period....  but the context of the song itself was how "The Uproot" album was even born, so I made an exception.....     This choice had a domino effect that would cause me to pull 4 songs meant for "The Uproot" and place them on "Chill Gawd, Chill" a Decision I immediately regretted that would cause more dominos to fall until the point I held off releasing "The Uproot" too long and eventually losing the Laptop that had all the finalized and much better sounded versions of the songs that exist on the demo version.....

BACKSTORY:

Created January 2015 at Sam"s Point Preserve in Upstate New York. Originally created for the House Shoes Flip Sessions #3 sample challenge.  It was the last night of the deadline and I was watching TV with my pops in the living room when a friend called to ask if I had submitted a flip yet.  I told him that I forgot all about it and it"s probably too late to start anything and I was busy chilling with my pops.  He called B.S. and said he knew I could flip it before the deadline in a few hours, so I asked my pops if he minded if I hijacked the living room and HDMI connect my laptop to the TV and my interface to the stereo and asked if would want to see me work in real time from scratch under pressure at the deadline...  He reluctantly agreed,  So I quickly set it up.....  Was super Lazy with the drums, and focused on chopping the sample beyond recognition and turning it into an instrument....        My pops watched me until the deadline at midnight, when he said "have fun, good luck, i"m going to bed now, don"t worry about turning the volume down"...   I ended up missing the midnight deadline which I purposely missed because I wanted to add another change up at the end..... Wouldn"t have been a Dutchyyy beat without Traversing the emotions and switching from tense and turmoil to a sonic victory lap.  Added some slight drum accents.   Uploaded my flip late to soundcloud even though I really wanted to put more work in the drums and was disqualified for being late (again) haha....  

When I was approached to released "Traversal" on Cassette in 2016,  I knew the digital version would fit under 90 minutes and I didn"t want to drop another 120 minute tape back to back,  So I cut certain songs from the digital version and added songs I originally wanted to put on the album and took advantage of being able to resequence the album from start to finish the way I originally envisioned it.  I did try to go back into this session and swap out the drums, but the hard drive that session existed on was stuck in a different state, so I just let the original ride out....

and thus,  Walk In Your Shoes was born.

Backstory:

Created October 16th, 2015 in Tampa Bay, FL.

The energy and intent that went into this track was multi-layered but wasn"t over thought.  I Basically was coming to terms with unknown declining health issues that were happening while I was eating well and exercising, so there was sarcastic energy and intent from the start. 

It was also layered with sarcastic (poke the beehive) energy as it was created during a time in which the meta was flipping classic R&B tracks but either making future bass or predictably simple and dancy so I wanted to take something super soft and seductive and put a more rugged and unpredictable twist on it.

It was also layered with still slightly being in touch with ex at the time who seemed to be struggling and leaning into some destructive escapism. So I wanted to add a bit of meaningful sincerity with the rebellious sarcasm....

Nothing really Crazy as far as backstories goes...   This was fun to flip and not overthink.

and thus,  Please Take Care (of Yourself) was born.

Backstory:



My Sample Challenge Flip Submission for Catalog Cook Off 005 (Abjo) hosted in the Catalog Works Discord back in October of 2022.

To be fair. This was more inspired by a sample than my usual sample flips. You only begin to hear the actual slightly manipulated Abjo start to be layered in around 4 minutes and 18 seconds. This Challenge happened to occur at a time when my health was [it still is] extremely bad, was difficult to sit up, felt like every fiber of my organic body was attacking itself, zero moments of comfort which makes being able to focus or be productive extremely challenging. My physical body was nerfed but my brain/mind/imagination were working over time...   I remember being so stressed out not understanding what was happening to me and losing my mind over the fact I not only had stacked deadlines, but so much creative ambition but my body couldn"t execute simple tasks no matter how much my spirit and mind wanted it... I was humbled to learn "mind over body" is just a wishful catch phrase. 

While laying sideways on a yoga mat with Ableton Live open to tackle this Abjo Challenge, I kept visualizing in vivid detail thousands of nanobots traveling through my bloodstream attacking everything that was causing harm to my physical vessel.

I blacked out, got distracted and ended up only using the sample as referencing and just composing and playing various virtual instruments creating the soundtrack to what my imagination was wishing would take place.

No headphones or studio monitors were used, just my laptop speakers... This doesn"t exist in the arrangement view as everything was sequenced, layered and arranged in real time via resample in real time....  Unfortunately, being on laptop speakers I couldn"t tell I accidently turned off the Side Chain to the Bass, so the raw real time bounce is all that will ever exist.

I ended up creating a visual / video to better help convey the meaning behind the song. My health has been bad for long time and as time passes it keeps getting worse, there are days where it"s so unbearable I don"t think I can push through it, but how many times can you publicly signal you aren"t well and don"t think you have the strength to push through before you"re just constantly ruining others day with a situation they can"t control or help. So these days it"s really bad.....  I just post"Please Send Nanobots" so at least there are breadcrumbs left behind. A Digital footprint marking all the days I didn"t want to endure pushing through, but kept going and kept spreading love and being as productive and consistent as possible.

and thus, Please Send Nanobots was born.
