Carousel by Chae TongYull

When my family and I were in Paris in the Spring of 1992, my 5-year-old daughter wanted to ride every Carousal in Paris again and again. It seemed like every corner of Paris had one. We know as a Carousal moves, it will eventually arrive at the departure point again and again, but excitement in her heart guided her to the eternal bliss where time and space cease to exist. 
How so?
Maybe her heart was filled with magic and mystery, leaving no room for mere fact and logic.
Now, she is 37 years old. Her heart still has no room for mere fact and logic.

Carousel was painted in NYCs East Village in 1986 after a year-long painting trip from NY to Yucatan, Mexico via Montreal, Canada and back to NY.
The concept of Nietzsche"s eternal return started the work.
Somehow 40 years later, the animated version of the work returned with a smile.

[Chae Tongyull]
With a color palette as rich as his life story, the works of Chae Tongyull are steeped in literary symbolism and rooted in a deep appreciation for romantic adventure. Born in Busan amidst the Korean War of the 1950s, Chae has traveled the world, eventually seeking his fame and fortune within the U.S. In his twenties, he was the founder of the Idists movement, an expressionist group based out of New Orleans. Later, he would move to New York City to become one of the only Asian (and only Korean artists) within the East Village art scene of the 1980s, where he was a contemporary of legends such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Since 1993, he has traveled and painted extensively within the Himalayas, exploring remote regions in China, Tibet, Nepal, and India. His works gain inspiration from a diverse range of classic artistic and literary traditions: the prose of Shakespeare, mysterious legends from Korean folklore, the eccentric brushstrokes of Chinese Calligraphy master Pa-Ta-Shan-Jen, Buddhist philosophy, and much more. Because of their rich texture and unique subject matter, his art has been praised and collected for its value in straddling both American and South Korean cultural identities, as well as various places in between.
He has participated in various international exhibitions including within the Bronfman Center in Montreal, Saatchi & Saatchi in NYC, And the Beat Goes On in Shanghai and Chengdu, and are part of permanent collections within the Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Samsung Lium Art Museum, Daelim Art Museum, and Daejeon Expo.

Waiting for a Train by Yeo Dong Chan

This is the first work in my Rain series, which portrays raindrops as a collection of water droplets captured on a glass surface, inviting viewers to interpret their own meanings and emotions. The background hue is a blend of diverse colors, while the sensation of rain is evoked through a scratch technique. Underneath these scratches lie an array of colors, representing the multitude of emotions that rain can evoke. The significance of each raindrop is magnified, emphasizing the immersive experience of rainfall.

Later, upon returning from visiting my mother in a nursing home due to her dementia, I found her presence also reflected back at me. [Yeo Dong Chan] Happy Place #1

One day, a boy of five years old woke up to find that nobody was home. After searching his empty house, he found he had been left in the care of a housekeeper- who told him his grandmother was in critical condition, and his mom had rushed to Busan to be with her. For five days, the boy and his younger brother anxiously stared out a window overlooking an orchard, hoping to catch sight of the train that would bring their mother home. The boy clung to his cat, finding solace in its silent companionship as he waited for whatever news the train brought.
    That boy was me. For those five days, I willed the train to come quicker, dragging it through the window into our home.  Using the contrast between achromatic and chromatic colors, I hope to express old memories embedded in my subconscious using time as a background.

Cherry Skulls-La Dolce Vita by CCREATT X GBDAY

In this artwork, a woman in Anatolia takes a sele in a traditional mirror known as the "dowry mirror" a mirror that used to be part of a bride"s dowry in Anatolian culture. I chose this object to depict the reection of the woman through the lens of traditions and a patriarchal perspective. The phone in the woman"s hand signies technology and our present- day world. While taking a sele, her hair transforms into silhouettes of oppressive male gures, whispering loudly into her ears. These whispers symbolize the gender and societal pressures that women face in the modern world.

[Bra zen] Mirror Selfie #3

In this artwork, I started out with the idea that the four-leaf clover symbolizes luck. In the center of this stylized portrait, a four-leaf clover takes form, with one leaf falling as a hand reaches to pluck it. I aimed to depict the futile efforts of someone seeking luck externally. With this piece, I wanted to express the message that "luck is actually within the individual, we are the luck."

[Bra zen] Lucky #3

In this artwork, I delve into the theme of alienation from the idea of home. To symbolize this alienation, I chose to depict a mermaid gure. This mermaid, distant from her natural habitat, sits atop a chest symbolizing her past values. The photo frames on the wall, empty, conveying a lack of belonging. Her long hair symbolizes her prolonged captivity in this space. She can"t easily leave through the door because there"s re in front, symbolizing her fears. She feels trapped.
    
 The home feels so strange, like a movie set with Lego walls, a fake tree, and a pretend moon. Despite feeling like she doesn"t belong, her belly is swollen with new hopes.

    Sit back and relax with Jooyeon Kohs Matinee: Zest, a collection of 33 unique 1 of 1 works that exist to put a smile on your face. Featuring a charming cast of critters who pout, sing, dance, and frolic for your amusement, the stars of the show are our cat heroes Cobi and Twipsy. These two long-running characters of Kohs feature in much of her work since 2015, including a collaboration with CrypToadz in 2023. Seoul-based artist Jooyeon Koh finds inspiration in the everyday and gives backstories to everything she sees. From pets to produce, she envisions a universe where everything and everyone has a role to play. Bringing these narratives to life begins with pencil sketches, which serve as the foundation for her ideas evolution across mediums that include digital, machine embroidery, canvas, and more. In particular, Kohs favorite protagonists and the ones she revisits most often are her cat heroes Cobi and Twipsy who serve as the star of her most recent endeavor Matinee: Zest with Orangehare. Previously, they had also starred in The Charade Show, which Koh rendered in art books, canvas, and embroidery before crossing into digital realms alongside CrypToadz in 2023 as an NFT project. In addition, artist Jooyeon Koh has collaborated with various Korean companies and fashion magazines, and is actively participating in domestic and international art fairs such as the Tokyo Art Book Fair and Seoul Design Festival.

[Jooyeon Koh] MATINEE: ZEST #11

I focused on the overwhelming sense of helplessness resulting from a series of destructive events occurring consecutively worldwide. The pupil of the eye, filled with tears of blood, is wide open in shock. Symbolic depictions of these unfortunate events are placed in the four corners of the pupil: Climate crises, earthquakes, wildfires, food shortages, and ocean pollution.
    
 Within the pupil, there is a rabbit running tirelessly. This rabbit seems as if it wants to escape but remains stuck in the same place, much like being trapped in an infinite "rabbit hole" that deepens and complicates.

Reclining Nude and Annapurna by Chae Tongyull



 About 10 years ago on the Annapurna circuit, I was hiking up a steep hill to Gyaru (3702m) when I suddenly heard loud rumbling noises behind me. 

 As I turned to face Annapurna 2, standing at 7,937 meters from the summit"s edge where snow formed a bowl-shaped crater, a breathtaking sight unfolded. A white, fluffy avalanche began its descent, moving slowly and gracefully like a chorus from a Bach composition.
