Embodied Discovery  A film by ZORA ft. Laurel Charleston

Laurel Charleston is the 10th and final recipient of the QMoDA 2023 Artist Grant. She is a groundbreaking artist using makeup as a medium. Her canvases have graced magazines, musicians, and celebrities, but through it all, Laurel has stayed true to her unique vision.

A multidisciplinary artist whose work spans the cosmetic, digital, and high fashion sectors. An internationally published makeup expert, Charleston"s oeuvre references cultural allusions as disparate as calligraphy and epidemiology, exploding industry-wide notions of "wearable" beauty with plenty of glamour to spare.

Charleston"s work has been featured on the covers of Dazed, Harper"s Bazaar, and THEM, and appeared in the pages of Vogue, W Mag, New York Times, PAPER, Allure, and Tush, among other outlets. 

Best known for her ground-breaking cosmetic designs on pop sensation Doja Cat for Paris Fashion Week of 2022, Charleston has expanded her celebrity roster to include the likes of Normani, Dylan Mulvaney, and Teyana Taylor, alongside luxury clientele like Macys, Coach, Instagram, Bombay Sapphire, Steve Madden, LOreal, POLO Ralph Lauren and Farfetch.

Charleston has also made her mark in the Metaverse by producing and curating a first-of-its-kind exhibition called "SuperTrans", a traveling gallery show that showcases trans artists from all over the world.

Water body

The binaries between man-woman, east-west, human-animal, and human-non-human intelligence have been created to solidify colonial power infrastructures in the West. However, we often see how in nature and "beyond it," these boundaries are always blurry. This collaborative work with AI connects ancestral and feminized aquatic mythologies through digital skins to reimagine future visions. Science fiction often explores the notion of the future through the lens of technoscientific development but more needs to be done to imagine the future of nature. 


Water is one of the most precious resources on Earth and while the water itself is not in danger as it is a naturally occurring resource on our planet, its access has been threatened due to pollution and climate change. By challenging binary thinking and drawing on life-centric systems, we can create a more inclusive and equitable world that values and protects our natural resources for future generations.

17 artists explore the vast potential of future relationships between AI and creative expression to hypothesize on the not-so-distant future.

In a world where technological advancements happen in the blink of an eye, AI is being pointed to in the cultural zeitgeist as an example of a potentially bleak and ominous future. It is worth considering, however, the ways computers and machine learning can push forward creativity, human connection and philosophical dialogues.

Dust and Hair

We live and we die, our atoms never disappearing just changing form over and over - into the dust under our feet.

Our palaces of stone will not protect us from our death or our bodies decay. Us mammals covered in hair that rail against our aging, our inevitable death and yet all that came before is already dust and we will go to meet those atoms soon enough.

I once made a ceramic pot and returned it to the wild to be washed away by the rain - a friend said to me I wonder if that clay will ever remember it was a pot

FUTURE PASTS, PAST FUTURES by Margaret Murphy embraces the absurdity of AI text-to-image outputs to make sense of our pasts as teens, while simultaneously hypothesizing adolescence in the future, featuring adolescent tropes with loving nostalgia. When visualized with the imperfection of AI, cultural adolescent tropes of such as prom, joyrides, house parties, summers pool-side, family vacations, and skate parks feel almost like last night"s dream. As time passes and memories fade, technology simultaneously helps us remember (and forget) our pasts, leading us to wonder about the adolescents of the future.

FUTURE PASTS, PAST FUTURES is part of the exhibition RECOLLECTION. AI AND MEMORY presented by EXPANDED.ART in collaboration with The NFT Gallery at their galleries in New York and London, 11 April  13 May 2023.

19 artists explore the idea of further challenging the concreteness of human memorypersonal or collectivethrough creative collaboration with AI. 

Memories are nebulous. Scientific studies and phenomena such as "The Mandela Effect" have shown that humans rarely recall things in their unbiased exactitude. Artificial Intelligence already assists human memory in the form of predictive text and GPS navigation. One would surmise that there exists a role for AI when it comes to supplementing even more complex memory.
