Many people fear the darkness, but what people forget is that we need darkness to see the light. 

The darkness moves ahead of the light and in my opinion, darkness is what pulls the light outward. As we race towards the spotlight, my wish for those who chase to also reflect back on the dark moments that forged the strength that takes them forward.

As I approach the specially designed sea lion haul out dock in Newport, Oregon, I spot a number of California Sea Lions sleeping peacefully in the warm sun, all piled up together like a puppy pile, their bodies intertwined in a cozy and adorable heap. 

The sea lions appear undisturbed by the loud sounds of the nearby pier and seafood plants on the historic Bayfront. Then, suddenly, there"s a change in atmosphere, and the peaceful slumber of the sea lions is disturbed by an approaching visitor. As another sea lion tries to climb on the dock, all the sea lions awaken abruptly, barking aggressively at the intruder. The once peaceful scene turns into a chaotic display of dominance, as the sea lions battle for space and access to the best sunbathing spot on the dock.

Once the ruckus is over, and everyone is comfy again, they all go back to dreaming of fish.

My NFT journey officially began with a photograph of a solo cheetah in May 2022 and the year now ends with two young cheetahs moving forward together. The year, like many of ours, has been filled with highs and lows. Despite this, when looking back I think of the following:

Rachel Suzanne Tien Wood Freedom to Be

Do you grow into your name? Or do you think your name is destiny telling you who you are? 

"Tien" is one of the Vietnamese names that I was adopted with. My parents choose to keep it in my American name as a tribute to my ancestry. 

The meaning of Tien can have several meanings depending on the context. Some common meanings include:

"forward" or "advance"  
"to gain" or "to earn"  
"kindness" or "benevolence"

It has Chinese origins from the character "" (tin), which means "sky" or "heaven." The character also has other meanings like "natural", "fate" and "day".

However I got the name, being Tien is my name. As a kid I used to hide that name because it made me different than the other kids in the USA. As an adult, I am more public about it for it is who I am. My name, although many others have it too, has shaped me, and thus it makes sense that it shapes my art too.  

My Name is Tien

There"s something freeing about letting it all go and living in the moment;  natural scenes are more vibrant, senses are heightened, and even if you"re a bit groggy from staying up all night shooting stars, there"s this ecstatic feeling that you still don"t really need caffeine at all.  This was one of those times for me.  
  
We had been living out of our van for a few months, traveling around the USA, seeing what there was to see, and we settled for a week on the southern Oregon coast.  Accommodations were few and far between, but we found a rest area amenable to our style of van camping (see also:  parking there and hoping nobody would tell us to move along).  Incredibly, our home base was within walking distance of the gorgeous rocky coastline!  
  
A couple of evenings, we went to the water"s edge and spent hours walking around in the cold waves, taking photos, setting up and dismantling tripods, generally having a great time with no worldly restraints (except for the occasional return to the van for a granola bar).  To this day, that hazy sunset sky is burned into my memory.

Dave Markel Editions

There are few places I am more familiar with than Wells Gray Park. I have seen it in good and bad, warm and cold, winter and summer. 

On this night I was set up along the Murtle River on a bend that curves to the north just above Dawson Falls. The Murtle river empties out of the south end of Murtle lake and over its 36 km length drops over 7 named waterfalls. 

It was a night of strong aurora and inclement weather. I had already been soaked by a shower and freaked out by fresh bear scat near the trail. However the aurora danced while the clouds ebbed and flowed only giving a small taste of the show above before snuffing it from view. I waited patiently for the privilege of seeing the show, capturing what I could when the sky opened.

June 2019 from my wildlife phase at my favorite pass in Colorado. Marshall Pass.  We met up with some big horn sheep. They paw and dig at the road looking for minerals.  They seem to congregate at the same place every year.  Creatures of habit.  So I love this image.  It reminds me that some habits are very good to have.
